Buff Pass/ Rabbit Ears Conditions

Considering driving down from Jackson being our forecast is a bit grim. Will it hold through the weekend?!

Yes it will. Rode from muddy creek all day yesterday and it was awesome! !!! Snowed off n on all day and then blizzard conditions when we left. We rode 10-20 inches of pow with slightly stiffer underneath. Should be a fresh 6-12 for those out today. All our track were buried when trying to find our way through the bush back to truck.

Today

Supposed to drive to SoCo tonight....But...

We are going back to ride what we couldn't hit today.

I plan on being at Muddy Creek Fri-Saturday. GMC with cab over camper and black enclosed trailer. Stop by and say hi if you're around. Might do some suspension tuning Friday but would like to ride Saturday.

How much new snow has fallen at rabbit ears? Would like to ride it Mon & Tues (2nd&3rd). Will it have 3 or 4 ft of fresh? Thanks.

Anyone have an update of conditions for rabbit ears right now? Anything on the forecast? Heading out Saturday from eastern South Dakota. Any info would be great.

Snow is great right now considering. South facing open areas still have low coverage and lots of rocks that are hidden just inches under the fresh snow. Watch out for creek beds and springs. Ive never seen so many open pits this time of year and even in bright sun they still sneak up pretty quick. Other than that, trees are great and coverage is picking up. Up to 3ft. expected in the next two days and its predicted to stay cold through the weekend, so should be good when you guys arrive.

Mt.Aero, we are thinking about heading down there or the snowies on Thursday. wheres the best place to check the forecast and what are some of the better places to ride around there?
Thanks,
AJ

noaa.gov is my favorite for forecasts because its decently accurate (in the scheme of things) and you can pinpoint forecasts to specific zones. If you are unfamiliar, just type in the city nearest to the zone you are after and then use the topo map the right to find your specific zone and click on it.

Good places to ride are subjective and change, but the area around Steamboat has a lot to offer. I really enjoy riding right around the Rabbit Ears themselves, but it's close to two of the parking lots, so it gets tracked up sooner than other areas. I have some secret spots, but those are... well... secret. :face-icon-small-ton There is a good mix of wide open areas and good trees which go from from mellow to crazy steep all over the area. RE and Buff have a large percentage of the area that fully ridable. Keeping boundaries in mind, you can just turn on a gps and go. (have a backup plan though if the gps goes down)

Just curious what the conditions are like and if anyone has any recent reports. A group of us might be leaving from Iowa on Friday.

I'm going up tomorrow and will report back. Probably not so great. Couple inches expected tonight and into the mid 40's by Saturday. Probably just enough snow to hide all those lingering rocks.

sorry, forgot to report back.

Temps have been in the 50's-60's here and the snow is deteriorating fast. some places it's 'rotten' and you trench just trying to move on flat ground. Other places, it's ok because it's soft enough you can still powder turn, but with so much stuff starting to poke out (rocks, trees, creeks) and so many tracks, it's just starting to be not really worth going out. Even if we get a decent dump here its still going to be dangerous to ride. Ripped some a-arms off a couple weeks ago and and don't care to repeat that.

That said, if you are in to trail riding and getting a tan, then it's awesome.

In other words is it going to be worth riding if they get couple feet of snow out of this system moving in wesday note. Are creeks running is there alot stuff sticking out too hit. Have no idea what it is like now. Thanks

Unless we get 4ft. or more of snow, I'm done boondocking in the Steamboat area. Bulletproof ice in the morning, rotten slush in the afternoon, creeks are open and running strong, rocks and stumps are showing all over. The predicted 3-6 inches this Wed-Thurs is only going to make it more dangerous to ride. Just not worth sled damage or getting hurt, at least for me.
