Buff Pass/ Rabbit Ears Conditions

I like the way he sees a 6' wide path, and looks to find a 4' path instead.
I would have had a handful of stucks in that ride!

Whats the fun in picking the easy line?? :face-icon-small-win Although, my sled might get a little less beat up with the 6' path!

Any updates? Thanks

Rode up there today. Very similar to the conditions of the Snowies, but not as wind blown. I would say it's early April conditions. Lots of warm weather has made the snow heavy, and there were spots that had a bit of a crust layer on it. Looks like more snow on the way between now and Tuesday, hopefully more than they forecast. If we get more snow and the temps drop, should be a great time because there's an awesome base now. Could wreak havoc for avy conditions though, so keep an eye on that.

Old video from the 5th... seems like forever ago now... coverage is solid... need more snow.

Rode Buff Pass on Thursday 1/22. Pretty tracked up. Did find some decent snow, but had to seek it out. Really had to get off the beaten path to find anything not used up. Not worth it IMO, unless they have gotten a fresh dump. If they have, then I would guess riding conditions to be pretty good as they did have a nice base.

Anybody at the Ears or Buff this weekend with a quick snow report? Thanks!

Rode last friday the 23rd. Total coverage is much lower than average, still gotta be careful while riding. Most everything was tracked up and hard packed. Hopefully this storm tonight and tomorrow develops and we see some accumulations.

With sub par snow conditions, we were still able to find good untouched snow :thumb:

January is looking to be the least amount of snow received in steamboat since they started keeping records.

From steamboat pilot paper:
By 6 a.m. Saturday, the ski area needs more than 6.25 inches of snow to fall if it wants to beat the previous driest January, which was in 1981, when 17 inches of snow fell.

The ski area has measured 10.75 inches of snow at mid-mountain this January, which on average sees 74.78 inches of snow. Snow was last measured Jan. 22 with 0.25 inches. Before that, it was Jan. 20 when 1 inch was measured.

Rode buff park yesterday. Anything hit by the sun has a half inch of crust. Despite not getting any snow for a month, we were still able to find good powder....or at least the closest you can get to it. It's deep in the dark north facing timber. If the trees look too tight at first glance to ride, that's where you want to be. just make sure you have a narrow sled and good tree riding ability and you'll have fun all day.

You mean pow as in sugar snow?

Well, I said the closest thing you could get to powder. Not sugar, but a more dense version of typical powder. It just hadn't gotten the warm temps to deteriorate to sugar. It's all moot now, we just got 6 inches with more on the way.

Been snowing all week at Wild Skies Cabins 90 minutes from Rabbit Ears

I will try and get photos we can upload tomorrow. Every day since Sunday it has snowed at our cabin. One day only a couple inches and other days 6+" with another 4" in the forecast for tonight and likely more at high elevations. If you are looking for miles of untracked terrain and fresh powder, consider booking with us. We still have Feb 5-16 available and misc dates in March. You'd e staying in a secluded 4 bed/3.5 bath cabin with no other rentals within a 30-60 mile radius.

Cheers,
Lisa

We are coming out to ride buff and the ears from the 14th thru the 21st. Any updates on the snow conditions after that last storm? Thanks a lot!

Rode the ears on Thursday and it was great. A little wind blown in the open spaces and the snow was more dense, but the trees were light and bottomless in some areas. Rode buff on Friday and it was much of the same. It's been warm since then though... really warm (I saw 51F in town yesterday) and it's expected to continue except for a brief hit of snow in the high country tomorrow. Hopefully the snow quality holds in the dense trees and north facing aspects at altitude, but I fully expect things to crust up a bit at lower elevation and where the sun hits it hard.

Rode out of muddy Friday morning - it was decent early but by noon it was in the mid 40's in the shade and the snow was pretty close to mashed potatoes. We just left after that

I'm so glad that you guys don't know how to find good snow, it leaves more untracked for us. We were up on Sat and had a freaking blast.

It is funny. We had plenty of good snow on Friday and rode until about 4:30... couldn't get enough! I often hear from people that rabbit ears is too crowded too, but I can go all day with only seeing guys at the parking lot.
