Buff Pass/ Rabbit Ears Conditions

Thanks guys. We have ridden buff and the ears for 15 years and never have trouble finding great snow and no issues with crowds. We'll stick to the steep north facing canyons, way back in the boonies!

Last rode there on the 5th. Came from IL and everyone local told us it wasn't worth the drive. We had a blast. Spring like conditions for sure, but last I knew I have a blast riding in the spring. We ended up getting lucky with a good amount of fresh (heavy, wet, midwest snow) on wed and thurs the 4th and 5th. Still, it was fresh snow. Got warm the 5th, but was sunny and beautiful. Plenty of snow and didn't hit anything. Found plenty of areas not far from Muddy Creek lot that was untracked. We had a blast even tho there wasn't fresh champagne pow. IT'S BETTER THAN SITTING AT HOME OR WORK!!!

I'm so glad that you guys don't know how to find good snow, it leaves more untracked for us. We were up on Sat and had a freaking blast.

Paint it however you like Dave. It rocks that you are killing it and having a great time. An optimistic attitude wins out every time. Makes the day a whole lot more enjoyable also. Hanging with friends and slaying the hillside beats staying at home. With that said, the conditions still suck for this time of year and I don't care who you are that's a fact. A true enthusiast as yourself makes the best of a poor situation, and you are doing so. I'm on the other end of that spectrum. I'm not much into the spring conditions any more and have pretty much written the year off. I'll just leave the untracked stuff for you and your posse.

Have a great season

Sam

Steamboat may have had the driest January on record, but after watching that video by ssxviper, it's still looking a heck of a lot better than it does down here around SW Colorado. We are having a wonderful early summer this February, it's been in the high 50's to mid 60's the last two weeks. Snow is rapidly disappearing, and so is my enthusiasm.

Worked on my dirt bike today, outside, in a t-shirt. Pretty weird. I think our snowpack around here is like 65% of average. This winter is done for us. At least you guys up north have close to average snow.

We are still doing pretty good on the northern end of the San Juans. Yes, the snow has been sitting for over a month with very little new but as mentioned the north sides in the trees are actually pretty dang good considering. We rode yesterday and I am entertaining a group of flatlanders on the mtn today.

Granted, this weather has been CRAZY..................... Most of my buddies with dirt bikes are on them this weekend. I don't ride a bike so I am making the best of what we have and still having a great time doing it. Once you get up on the mountain, on the snow, away from town, you will forget all about the dirt and dust. For me, it is still worth going, and hopefully we will get some spring snows pretty soon!

From the last storm the tower snotel is now up to 80" of snow... at this time last year it was reading 131".... about all you need to know about this snow year!! HA!

Needless to say, we'll be up there Saturday, hoping the snow pattern holds!

Over 8 inches of snow last night

Here is the national weather snowtel info link to back it up. We are SW of Rabbit Ears so look for the lone 8.4 blue circle in the NW part of the state surrounded by no other site info and just national forest (that is near where Wild Skies' Cabin is located).

We still have March 11-26 and April available for anyone interested in having the untracked terrain out of a fantastic ride in/out cabin.

Cheers,
Lisa

Looking for the "Engineers"

Was up at Muddy Creek Feb 5-8 and ran into a group of young engineers in their cool trailer conversion - you know who you are.

Would like to make contact again. Drop me a PM.

Cheers,
Neil

Over two feet of fresh snow at Wild Skies Cabins in NW CO Feb 22

Photos taken Friday Feb 20th around noon. Snowed mostly straight through to Sunday night although there were periods when it stopped a little and a new storm would blow in more snow. Very light "Steamboat Champagne Powder" that is great for snowmobiling but not good for building igloos or snowball fights.

Temps stayed low btw 6-26 degrees, a bit windy with off and on gusts.

We are near the Ripple Creekt snowtel site )link below):

I'll have more photos to post tomorrow.

was up there Saturday and Sunday. the snow is excellent. over the windshield deep in most areas! Just be careful because i saw some people getting into the creeks and getting into some bad situations, most of them are sinkholes.

rabbit or buff?

Murph, if you ain't too tired for a little drive in the evening.

Strawberry Hotsprings is worth the drive for a super cool soak. Take a flashlight, and wear your skivvies under your snowsuits. Booze in plastic bottles.
