Break-in

Every year at this time the question of how to break-in my new sled comes up. I have my opinion.

I would like to ask though, how did you break in your Pro 800 engine and how many miles did that engine get or have on it now? Maybe include how much oil it used in the first 200 miles if you think it is important.

Just rode it. The dealer had some oil in the tank and every time I ride it I add a small amount. I have 1500 miles on my 2011 w/o a single motor issue.

No experience with the pro yet but i will break it in like every motor I have, NO SYNTHETIC OIL, a couple of heat cycles and try to keep it at full load as much as possible the first tank of fuel. This is my opinion and I feel this is the way to get the most power out of motor. Many will disagree. Geo, I'm curious to what your approach is?

Biggest 2 things to breaking in a motor. Make sure its warmed up well. Then heat cycle it. Everything else is minor and personnel preference

I heat cycled it several times with the extra oil in the gas on the stand.

Took it easy first couple hours, checking fluid levels to make sure it was using oil and not losing coolant.Checked belt tension, looked for loose bolts, regreased chassis, tensioned track, chaincase.

After break in,as usual I warm it up and ride it.No problems at just shy of 1000 miles.:face-icon-small-hap

I pre mix the first tank at 50:1, heat cycle the motor a few times in the garage, amd let her get good and warm again for the first ride prior to going anywhere. On the first ride I try to ride like I will ride it, but vary the throttle an rpms a lot and don't hold it wide open for more than three seconds.

Added extra oil to gas of course. Made sure everything was warmed up well. First short ride....rode easy but with lots of RPM variance. Not much snow coverage as it was early season, so couldn't do any big pulls even if I wanted to. Basically normal riding without a lot of off-trail.

Second ride I intended to repeat the first ride, but the snow was better and we ended up riding everywhere. Ended up having to tow my buddy's Doo out of a nasty spot 25kms from the truck in the dark until everyone ran out of fuel.

After that I figured I'd either performed (or completely f'd up) the break-in. So I just rode it normal ever since. I think at the end of last year I had 1,500 miles without issue. I add a dab of oil to every tank for whatever that's worth.

I always find the break in discussions interesting. Also, I was just thumbing through my 2013 manual. Didn't the 2012 manuals say to run Polaris blue semi-synthetic oil for the first pre-mix tank and break in period? The oil tanks were supposedly filled with semi-synthetic blend with no die to help seat the rings? My 2013 manual says to run VES Gold Plus for pre-mix and break in.

If you are after power then I would recommend not running synthetic oil. Non-Synthetic will better seat the rings a net you more HP in the long run.

Very interesting, I always premixed my cats at 8ozs for the first tank and making sure to vary throttle positions during the first tank. After that, pin it and smile.

So anyone Google Mototune yet? Or just read right past it?

Lots of info out there about it. Things have changed a lot over the years on break-in. I have used the mototune method since about 2004 on all my new sleds and all of my dirt track stock car motors. My 4-stroke sleds all ran very well and didnt burn any oil. I do cylinder leak down test on my race motors every three to 4 weeks and ever since I started breaking them in with this method I get almost twice the life out of the motor before needing to rebuild them.

Do what you like......Its your sled :) Eric

what i gathered from the info i read was load the engine with wide open burst's for the first 20 mile's.

after letting the engine warm up of course

Me and two buddy's all got new 800 in 2011 took them out to west yellowstone that nov right after turkey day when they got nailed with a bunch of fresh snow. I lead most of the time pushing three to four feet of untouched powder, all the sleds were ran very hard from the start. We never added any extra oil the first year, I did a little extra oil last year my motor broke the cylinder skirt at 2600 miles last march, the other two traded for 12 and rode them even harder last year on break-in no issues!! Got a new 13 coming and I going to ride it hard right out of the gate!!!
