Break-In procedure

I'm looking for advice on the proper break in procedure. The extra quart of oil is in the tank, should I do anything else other than run it?

Good article, Thanks. This recommends the three heat cycle method, is that what most folk do?

I get new polaris mountian sled every other year and just got my axys last week. I will do what I allways do, put fuel in it and grab a hand full of throttle.
(I have yet to have a engine failure):biggrin1:

I was told it by my friends with one that is was 300 mile before full power on last years HO models. I have not seen anything on that this year.

This was last years model

http://cs.amsnow.com/sno/b/sno/archive/2014/08/25/polaris-800-h-o-engine-update.aspx

"The new 800 engine will also come with a ‘break-in’ period controlled by the ECU, very similar to what Ski-Doo uses on their sleds. While in ‘break-in’ mode, the ECU delivers more oil to the engine which should also improve durability. This ‘break-in’ period is timed by the ECU and should last around five hours or the first 200-300 miles. Polaris’ current 600 engine also will now have a break-in period, slightly shorter than the 800."

Thats a BUNCH of extra oil. I would buy some extra spark plugs to have with you for the first ride, you might need a few sets.

32oz of oil with a full take of gas is about a 45:1 ratio, which is fine.....if the injection system was removed. Add in what the pump will be delivering during break-in period and your going to be in the 20 to 25:1 range and thats A LOT of oil. Eric

i dont know what ratio doo's etec uses during break it, but it is no exaggeration when i say it used damn near TWICE as much as my buddy's xm that was already broke in (doing the same riding, following eachother around the trees at 8000-10000 feet). so just a heads up to you guys.....if you plan on riding for more than 2 days, BRING OIL!

Never had any issues with plugs during break in with the extra quart in there.

I let it warm up to 110-120, shut it off for 5-10 mins, let it warm back up. Ride easy a few miles up the road - stop and check everything, make sure no vital fluids are pissing out. Do that a couple more times. Vary the throttle - sleds feel pretty tight the first few miles so don't do anything crazy. Don't overheat it if the snow conditions suck. After its warmed up and loosened up a bit really short blasts of lots of throttle are cool IMO...but I would try to avoid climbing in deep snow or other long full throttle stuff for the first ride. Vary the throttle and accel/decel. "Heat cycles" at home are something that showed up on here a couple years ago....not sure what the logic is but I don't subscribe.

I don't know if people are exaggerating or what...but starting it up and pinning it out of the parking lot is a fairly terrible idea. Even with a broken in motor, full throttle on a sled motor in the first mile or 2 of the day is always a bad idea.

First 38 miles today. Zero issues. Followed a similar break in period described in the link below. Had some nice WOT pulls around the 20 mile mark. I stopped and let the QC cool down as well in the first 20 miles. Conditions were 10-14" powder (I know, but it's michigan), so not a lot of strain on the drive train. We'll see if I pay the price for not following the user manual 100 mile break in period.

I'll post again at 500 miles or before if I fry the QD belt.

My MY14 pro had 2K miles on it at the end of last season. I followed the above link break in procedure - possibly sacrificing the drive belt and QD belt for the engines sake. I'm still on the original QD belt and I swapped out the drive belt at 1K miles for good measure. This summer, the engine tested as good as new with only 1 lb compression difference between cylinders. Exclusively use Legend oil.

I'll be following the same procedure with the new Axys.

That Legend Oil is awesome stuff!!

Thanks for all the help. Based on the input I think I will do this.

First, warm it up good and cool
Down

Second, warm it up and ride it like my first time on a sled

Third, ride run it like it was my Dads new sled

Forth, ride it like I stole it

Thoughts?

Warm it up to 110 and ride it like I stole it :) done it on new sleds since 2001 and no issues. One motor I did lose was a used sled that I didn't break in.
