Howdy folks. Brand new to the forum and glad to have it available. Seems there are tons of sled options out there.
My wife and I did very little sledding years ago when we lived in MT. A buddy has a place in Easton and a couple of sleds. We've talked about getting a couple sleds ourselves and spending some time at their cabin. Most of the riding is off-trail. He's suggested checking out a couple of 2009 Summit 800 rigs in Eburg, but I'm a little hesitant to drop $8-9k per sled, plus trailer and accessories for starters. After a season or two and knowing we are hooked for sure, we could upgrade. Plus, I've read it might be better to start off with a lesser sled and build skills than get a better sled, but let it do most of the work (so we don't learn how to ride as well). No to mention I'm sure one of us will beat the crud out of his, errr, one of the sleds.
I'd like to pick up a pair of used matched sleds for my wife and I . She's about 115#, I'm 180#. I'm thinking matched so that I only need to have 1 of each routinely broken part (belts, skis, etc) on hand rather than parts for each sled. I know that will greatly reduce my available choices, so am I over preparing in that area and should just buy two different models, even manufacturers?
I'm looking to avoid getting into crappy engine repairs right off the bat. I'd rather spend a little more cash up front and not have engine problems the first season or so. I'd probably do all the typical minor repairs myself, but take them into the shop for motor issues. so I'm thinking something in the 2006+ year range.
I'm looking to spend about $10k into the sleds and trailer (basic 2-sled, individual tilt), then whetever else for clothing, helmets, spare parts, etc. Is this realistic? Anyone looking to upgrade?
Thanks for any wisdom.
