Bighorn suggestions

Looking for suggestions for the bighorns. Last year we stayed at Wyoming High Country. We drove around to the Lovell side. Any suggestions for the East side? We are coming from Minnesota probably around Presidents' Day weekend or a little later. Is there only Bear, Elk View and Arrowhead on that side? We want to ride and not have to trailer everyday. Thanks

as far as riding, bear and elk view are only 2 miles apart roughly, so really makes no difference there. I haven't really rode down by arrowhead so cant give any advise there.

Bear owns all of them but Arrowhead is always a "last resort". It's not it's location..the place just blows!

yep, bear, elk view, and arrowhead are it. elk view has excellent food!!

To be honest I like the food at bear better. And the servers/staff in general seem a lot more friendly there. But elk does have really nice rooms there... Not that your going out there for the room or food :face-icon-small-win

How bout a little farther south on the bighorns. Deer haven lodge is decent. Food is good. Bar stays open as long as your drinking. They have basic cabins, just beds and a heater. And 6 or so, hotel style rooms with double queen beds, bathroom, shower. Prices aren't bad.

Looks like the North and South are about the same distance depending on if we go through ND or SD. What's everyone's opinion on better riding? North or South?

Maybe less snow at deer haven. Start riding north from the lodge and you get into better riding than the burgess side. I hate seeing a sh!t ton of people when I ride. That's prolly why I hate burgess so much

Must have been an off week last year. We went to wyoming high country at the end of February and never really saw anyone at all riding. We didn't ride trails and I don't think we saw anyone some of the days at all.

That side is less traveled then burgess junction.
I've never been to HCL but would like to visit and see what's up around there

The north end is a lot more traveled and sometimes you need to do a lot of poking around to find good riding. I've always been able to find some good stuff but I have spent a day of looking for 15 minutes of powder! I guess I hadn't heard that Deer Haven was open. I only went south once and we drove out from Gillette and ran around some, didn't find anything decent and left. Does Deer Haven have fuel?
High Country is just too spendy for me, I'll stay on the east side and ride over. I got tired of being laught at last year for paying more for 4 month old fuel that the other guys paid for their race fuel!

Deer have has fuel most the time. The have rental yamahas a restaurant and bar and rooms or cabins to stay in. The same guy owns south fork lodge, meadowlark ski lodge and deer haven.

He's working in getting the meadowlark gas pumps and lodge up and running. Not sure if it's done or not.

We have been to the Bighorns many times, winter, and summer. I love the Horns. It's been 4 years since I have snowmobiled there, but it seems to me that later in the winter is better for snow. I thought the Bear had the best food while the Elk View had the best rooms. Farther north of Burgess Junction is normally better snow. The Wyoming High Country/Devils Canyon areas can be a lot fun too! If you can swing it. Try to get to some other riding areas close by, like maybe Cooke City, or the Snowies.
The number one thing I don't like about Wyoming is the cigarette smoke in the bars and restaurants. :face-icon-small-fro

We usually drive back and forth from sheridan every day. The only time i stay on the mountain is if i get invited with a group that had reservations for about the year in advance that it takes. Ive stayed at bear and elk view multiple times. The restaurant at elk view has gone down the chitter in the last couple of years. It used to have pretty decent food. If your worried about which place has better food, bear and elk view are a 2 minute snowmobile ride apart. I have not stayed at arrowhead, but I haven't heard much good about the place. Elk view is my number one pick due to the quality of the rooms.

Yes. Wyoming reeks of freedom.

I'm not sure what Elk View you guys are eating at :face-icon-small-con, but since Dec 2012 I have eaten at Elk View 3 times, Bear Lodge 2 times, and High Country 2 times. Elk View was hands down by far the best food, and most food on the mountain every time.

The gas pump at Meadowlark was working in October. The rental sleds at deer haven are hit and miss, I've seen people show up to get sleds there after they've called well in advance and sleds not be running. I think it's an issue they have since the sleds are high priced, they do not move much.
