Bear Lodge - Arrowhead - The Passage - Meadowlark - Deerhaven - Ranger Creek. How would you rate them ... what's your favorite & why?

Have spent time at bear lodge and arrowhead. Both were nice clean places with pretty good service.

only stayed at bear, but don't have anything bad to say about it. food was great (especially the breakfast buffet), nice enough staff for the most part. really nice cabin, partied with the staff as some of them can be very entertaining :beer;, overall we had a great time an will definately be back

Have always stayed at Arrowhead - always had a great time, gas is cheaper there (from what I've seen) rooms are clean, food is good, service is good, but their phone reservation system needs work. We will be back - every year!

I have been happy with Bear Lodge the last 4 years. Good food, bar, gas and parts if you ride Polaris.

They are in the process of buying Arrowhead, so we will see how people like that.

Right now Bear is the best choice. I always liked the Big Horn Lodge but after they sold out and it bacame the Passage, it's a mess. Last year was'nt too bad, but the manager they have in there now is really bad. They are spending millions of dollars and driving away all their customers.

Don't go to the Passage. We just spent a week there and it was awful. The room was trashed, broken doors, no locks, and it was generally a mess. When I made reservations their website said they had a pool and a hot tub, but when we got there we were told they wouldn't be finished for another 6 months. The service was bad and we couldn't get anything to eat at 9pm, and to make matters worse, most of the bartenders were drunk the whole time they were working. Although gas was cheap, snow was good, and the rates were reasonable, I would never go back.

Did you stay in a cabin or room?

We stayed at the Passage in Feb.

The good:
Our room was clean and they let us check in at 9 am Wed morning instead of waiting till afternoon (we drove straight through from St. Paul MN after work on a tuesday). Gas was the same price as in town and we never had to wait in lines to fill up. Food was good - the Saturday night crab feast was worth the $. Yes the bartenders may drink on duty but hey we drank for free one night and got a round or two free the other nights. The radiant heat in the cabins kept everything toasty.

The Bad:

Our door to our cabin was crappy and difficult to lock/unlock. We stayed in the last cabin on the north end (closest to the new hotel). The lot wasn't plowed worth a cr&p - I buried my Suburban and 4 place trailer up to the rockers on the night before we were leaving trying to get it to a spot that wouldn't be blocked in the morning. Oh did I mention parking is crowded on Sat. nights. The lodge is on the east side of a huge field and gets TONS of windblown snow after each snowfall -2 years ago we had sleds completely covered/encased in snow overnight. When we had breakfast the first morning we were the only ones there and food still took about 20+ minutes for 4 easy orders.

Would I stay there again? Well I booked 4 weeks ahead and Bear and Arrowhead were full, so if it were the only option of the three then yes I'd stay again. We ate at Bear on Friday...talk about lousy service. We were 10 feet from the bar and after getting our meals we asked the waitress 3 times for a beverage order - finally gave up and went to the bar ourselves. Otherwise food was ok and sledmovies on the many tvs (as opposed to the Passages one) was nice.

I think the place to stay is Bear Lodge, great food, great people and just a great Lodge. Arrowhead is nice but could be better!!!! To be honest The Passage has a great bar scene but they have to get there act together. The bar is nice but the bartenders are lazy or drunk, the hotel they are building is taking forever, They really need to get there act together at that place!!! It’s nice and has great food but pisses me off!!!!. The management is just horse ****!!!!

I have never stayed at Ranger Creek, but would like to I think. Next year we are going to look into saying there. From what I have heard and read it’s a really nice place and great people. I called there a few weeks back to try to get in at the last minute to get back out there and the phone service was great. Would/Will be giving them a try!!!

Here is my 2.....

Been going out there for 3 years and have had a great time every time!!! Stayed at Bear 4 times and the passage once and it will be the last time I ever stay there. The year we stayed at the passage was the first year that it was called that. We had a great time, at that time the bar was owned by a guide named Al, awesome person great time at the bar and good food. Our rooms were clean and pretty good, we don't require much not one of those fancy dancy kind of people. The guys I go with have been going longer then I and decided to stay at the passage do to the fact Bear was booked. The next year we were all up for staying there again but decided to stay at Bear in December and were going to book the passage in March. Visibility was horrible one day and so we stayed down low and decided that we would go over and see AL and have some lunch. Well that was the last time I will ever visit the passage as it was the WORST SERVICE I have ever experienced in my life!!!!! Walked in, 5 employees standing around not one said hi, one of us walked up to the bar and the other 4 sat down at a table. Guy that went to the bar sat there for 10 minutes before the workers fooling around at the end of the bar even came up to him. Us guys at the table still waiting after 20 minutes, then 25 minutes, then 30 minutes, ok now I'm pissed. So I walk up to the bar and say something, a little agitated but not yelling. The people just kinda look at me and slowly meander over, well thats when we turned around grabbed our gear and walked out, not a word out of one person!!!!!!

This is the best part, so I get home and send an email to passage resort to tell them of my experience, thinking it might not be known to management. So I write this 2 page letter to inform them of what happend and the time and date. No curse words, no yelling just a nice honest letter. No response period!!!!! So last year I am working at the Minneapolis Snow Show, and a guy comes up to me looking to outfit his lodge with clothing and wonders if he can talk to the person in charge. So I told him that I was a Rep and would be happy to get the owner of the dealership. I quickly find out that he is not willing to spend the money for my line and wants a bunch of closeout stuff for the Passage Resort. I said the passage at Big Horn, he says yaeh you been?? In this happy Jolly voice and I say Yeah, but never again. I asked him if they return emails and he said yeah I read every one myself.... I said then how come you never replied to mine. He proceded to tell me that he never heard of such a thing but gave me his card and said, we had some problems but if you come again I will make it right and you'll see that its much different. So I call him a few times before we leave and never get a call back, I'm sure its changed.......never again waste money or vacation at the place again!!!!!!

Ok it was more like 20 dollars but take it for what its worth, stay at Bear and you'll be happy, Rick and Robertta are awesome people and will do a lot to help you out and make your stay good!!!

Stayed @ Snowshoe a couple of years ago. Small Lodge and sled in. Only 3 cabins with lots of privacy. Nice clean log cabins with fridge, microwave, etc. Facility has both Hot tub & Sauna that worked wonderfully. Food was Ranch style & excellent. Had a barbeque if wanted to do your own meals. Heated shop available for use at no cost with in-floor heat. Cabin the sleeps three was around $135 a night. Would definitely return! Facility is for sale now, so hope they continue the service.

Tried to stay again this year but booked. Went to Ranger Creek. Cabins were very cabiny. Floors were cold. Food in lodge was good but the lodge is often chilly. One morning around 40*. Hot tub wasn't working and didn't appear to have been for a while. WiFi was minimally accessable. A bit pricey as advertised cost was $155 a night including breakfast, however added cost of a 20% service fee plus sales taxes. Not worth the cost!
