Better place to ride from in the Snowies, Albany or Ryan park?

Looking at taking a trip to the snowies for the first time and was looking for some advice on where to stay. We are looking for somewhere that we can either ride from where we stay with minimal trail time or somewhere we can trailer to, avoiding time on the trail.

We are looking at either staying at albany lodge or somewhere in ryan park.

Suggestions?

Stayed at Mountain Meadow Cabins last year and planning on it again first week in feb. this year. Step out of cabin onto your sled. Not sure about all the thieving going on in the parking area tho. Locals will know better.

Albany Lodge is a nice place to stay because they have lodging, restraunt, bar, rentals, service andsome parts if you have any troubles. The only problem is that it is far from the good hills and snow. If you are not wanting to run trails much, do not stay at Albany Lodge.

You may want to stay at Mountain Meadows like the previous posting said. Chris at Mountain Meadows treats you pretty fair and you ride right from the door of your cabin. The only issue is is that you can't pull your truck to the door. Chis or his wife/staff comes down with a Scandic and snow trailer to help with your gear. Gas is available at Snowy Mountain Lodge whch can be slow and a hassle.

I have been to the Snowies several times in the last 14 years but never stayed on the other side at Saratoga/ Ryan Park area.

Just my $.02

Snowy Mtn Lodged is closed....no gas.

for how long????

That's yet to be determined since the FS pulled their permit, so don't count on it being open any time soon.

Some have been reporting gas theft from their tow rigs and cans when parked along the end of 130 lately (Greenrock), so take it for what it's worth....

The FS has supposedly been doing some beatle-kill logging out of Albany and the road is stated as being ice/gravel right now. They are supposed to be done with that tomorrow, but the trail is currently hosed(?).

Stay in Centennial

If your going to the Snowies, Stay in Centennial at the Old Corral. It is at the base of the Mountain and you can get a better nights sleep there than up on the mountain because of the altitude. A few years back we stayed at the Lodge up on the mountain but most of us were as tired the start of the second day as we were the night before. The altitude is a kicker if your coming from the flat land. Centennial is about 2500 feet lower and gives you a great meal hot bath and a chance for you body to recover. There are also some great pubs around town. The old corral has the nicest rooms, affordable and good staff. Centennial is only a 10 minute ride up the mountain to the best riding. I have stayed at Albany also, good food, fuel, room, but too far from the good riding until about late feb or march. Never stayed at Mountain Meadows but the owner is a nice guy. You will love the Snowies! It is absolutely some of the best riding in the west. Book a room in advance or you will be driving 40 miles back to Laramie.
www.oldcorral.com or albanylodge.com. Have fun and dont stray to far if its a white out. you will get lost!!

What kind of riding do you prefer? Boondockin? Hillclimbin? You stated that you wanted less trail time , well less trail time to what kind of riding. There are alot of places in Centennial to stay with minimal trailer time, Old Corral, Winter Creek Condos.... Give us more insight and we will try to help. Albany is great but have to trail miles + to get to the steep stuff, but the meadows and wildlife down there are awesome.

Would it be better to stay in centenial vs. Albany to get to the steep stuff in the snowies? We stayed at albany this weekend but never made it to the steep stuff because the trails wouldn't end! Not very good weather either; better day for the trees. But I was just curious if staying in Centenial would be easier to get to the steeper terrain.

Thanks

I would highly recommend the Rendezvous at Ryan's park. Good people, restaurant, bar, rentals, and gas. And because we do most of our riding on the west side, it cuts down on our trail riding.

We always park at green rock, just up from centennial, then head in. We usually head straight to the Lake Marie area then over to the west side. It really depends on where you are coming from, we dont use Ryans Park because we are coming from the east. Get out your trail map and study it, is Albany anywhere near the avalanche areas.

Winter Creek Condos is a great place to stay Mira has treated us great everytime we've been there and sometimes if snow is good enough you can ride out of there. It is also pretty close to the steep and deep if that's what your looking for. you will have to bring in your own food and booze tho. It is not too far from centennial and you can easily drive there if you need any groceries or gas or something.
