Those of you who have ridden 09 M8's.

What do you consider the optimum track length with the Power Claw?

Is it really as easy as 153" for boondocking and 162" for hill climbing?

What are your thoughts?

Had M1000 with 153, and M1000 with 162 didn"t notice much diff when boondocking but did climbing. In my op I wouldn't go less then 162. On flat ground can still carve a 15' circle:D

Thanks for the info.

It makes sense that anything less than a 162" on a M1000 wouldn't be optimum with all the snort on tap.

How about on the M8?

I'm sure the 153" M8 is a boondocking feind but, when the going gets steep and deep does the 153" leave you longing (no pun intended) for the longer 162" track?

How much do you weigh? That has alot to do with it. There are alot of smaller guys who can outclimb anyone with just a 153". The 162 is nice for the m1000 or if you are a pretty big guy on a M8. Im 215 pounds and I can get anywhere on my M8 153.

I'm about 170 without gear.

I just remember the incredible difference going from a 151" x 15 to a 159" x 16on my RX-1M. It was so dramatic that I went to a 162" x 16" x 2 1/2" Camo Extreme and that heavy four stroke actually floats nicely (it's riding on a M7 rear skid).

I just put a 153" Nytro MTX rear skid and Maverick (turned around backward)under my son's MM700 and it looks like a short track compared to my RX-1M.

This time around I was looking for a light flickable sled but, I'm still a horse power junkie at heart. That's why it's so darn tough for me to decide between the light weight M8 and the powerful M1000.

Bingo....

Frosty....this is my EAXCT quondree.....go Big or go lite and flickable...I too am going to an M sled next year unless Yamaha pulls there head from there azz and Yamaha neer tries to shock and Awe the competition so I suspect this year will be another let down as far as that's considered. I weigh 300 with gear and wonder if the shorter track over comes the length by high track speed....then I wonder if I should just go the M1000 153 for extra track speed and light weight the sled with Timbersled add ons to bring the weigh down that 25 lbs......so many decisions...LOL.

i have ridden the M8 with a 153" on it and been around M1000's with 162's and 153's. the M1 really shines through with the longer track when it comes to climbing hills. its pretty impressive. but the M8 with the 153 really seems to be able to keep up with the M1. it carries a little more track speed and a little less weight. in my eyes its a toss up...depends on the rider more or less

Excellent, it's great to know there are others with the same dilemma.

I have a demo ride set up (once it snows again on the concrete snow) on both the 09 M8 and M1000. I'll let you know my impressions.

After everything I read, the 153" M8's are showing the Xpee's their rear flap on the hills. The problem is no one seems to have seen how a 153" M8 and a 162" M8 compare on the hills.

I think that for a M1000 for me it's a done deal. If you go with the bigger sled, get the longer track.

I guess that's why the spring only LE models were offered with a 153" track on the M8 and 162" on the M1000.

I've been having this problem for the last 3 years. I go with the m1 153, then ride a m1 162 and feel that I do a lot better. Then I go to a m8 153 and mod it up, now I'm sitting here wondering should I go back to the m1 162 and mod up. But I like to boondock more than climb, so here I am tossed again.

FWIW, I ride an 'ol M7 153. Yes, it is clutched properly and lightened. I weigh 210 with gear. There have only been a few times I was wishing for a long track. I ride with M1000 162's and there is not a place I cannot go that they do. Granted we don't climb chutes nor are material for Slednecks.

You will not be disappointed with the 162 at all. It is a beast. I guess it all depends on the deals you can get now that the dealers have excess inventory.

I think it depends on snow conditions and rider preference. It seems like in the 3' or less powder they are equal. In the deep and dry powder, I think thats where you are going to see the difference. Where I ride the 162 and 153 seem equal in climbing ability. The 153 will get there with more throttle, I think it's funner to sidehill and jump with the "short track"

There have only been 2 days in my life that I ever wished I had a 162 over a 153. Both of those days were 3+ feet of Colorado light powder. I have an 09 M8 153 and love it. The Powerclaw track is very impressive. I go 220 with gear and the 153 is great for me.

M8 162

I am 250# so I went with the 162 on my 07 M8 my wife has a 153 m6 and honestly I do not feel the difference in handling except the difference in power. My riding buddy has the M1000 162" and has spent several thousand dollars to get the weight down it still feels heavy to me compared to my M8. I have never regretted going with the M8 over the 1000

What about track speeds?

I'm sure a 153" track allows higher track speeds but, does that track speed result in higher ground speeds while climbing?

Also, I makes sense that in less than super deep snow the 153" would rule but, in boondocking oftentimes the snow is super deep and it's the floatation we're looking for not climbing ability.

Does the 162" make a M8 float markedly better than a 153" in the deep stuff?

I have both a 153 m8 and a 162 m8. I can swap from one sled to the other and cannot tell the difference while boondocking, but you get on a uphill sidehill the 162 is the way to go. My wife rides the 162 and this helps a ton especially for starting out slow without trenching and also helps my back cause she does not get stuck as much. Both my next sleds will be 162.

I theory yes it would but In all actually it I havent been able to notice it. A guy I ride with has a 162 and where ever he goes I go. I can notice a little difference in carvability having that little bit of extra track but maybe thats just me. You will get hiher track speeds with the 153 while climbing but that doesn't always mean higher ground speeds while climbing. I really think you will be just fine with the 153. You said that you have a demo set up so I would go ride them both and pass your own judement because every rider is just a little bit different depending on there riding techniques.

Thanks for the info.

Are the M series sleds easier to lay over in the powder now that they have no outside idlers on the rear axle?

Has anyone bent the new slide rails yet? They may be strong as heck but, they certainly look like they could bend if you land hard while jumping.

I ordered a rail stiffener kit on my M8...$120 dollars for the kit is a hell of a lot cheaper than those rails. Of course they add weight but i do a fair bit of riding here at home on the bald azz prairie :D
