dance,dance,dance

Its a good morning, its starting to snow. Keep up the snow dance. The snowman is calling for up to 5 inches of snow today. But for Sunday and Monday we will see partly cloudy skies. Tuesday through Thursday we have a chance of snow.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: As the snowpack trends towards stability, it’s easy to get complacent and let your guard down. It’s important to remember that large and dangerous avalanches are still possible. It can’t be emphasized enough how important it is to follow the three simple rules of safe backcountry travel. 1) Everyone has proper rescue gear and knows how to use it. 2) Always watch your partner from a safe location. 3) Only expose one person at a time on steep slopes.

Today, heightened avalanche conditions exist and the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE on all slopes.

Another busy morning at the Bakery and the shop. Good thing we work on all brands of sleds.

I forgot to thank MOM's MOTOR SPORTS for staying again with us. We'll see you at the end of March. Be safe.

Default COMMENT PERIOD OPEN FOR BEARTOOTH RIDING AREA
For those of you who do not live in Wyoming or Montana, but come riding in the Cooke City area, this concerns you!

Hello outdoor enthusiasts,

I know you have seen information from me in the past several months on the WPLI process. It is time now for comments on the High Lakes WSA. The comment period ends FEBUARY 1st!This is almost everything we ride on the north side of the highway in the Beartooths. If we lose this area, it will cut our riding in half, and stick everyone in half the area. Think about that for a minute. I for one do not like riding a tracked up mountain, so I would like to have every single acre open that we can. If you are not familiar with this process, stop and see me at Roger’s Sport Center, and I will be glad to explain it to you. We need your support on this, if we are going to secure this riding area permanently. Let’s put this to bed once and for all!
The link to the commissioners page is http://www.parkcounty.us/commissioners/wpli.html. The link to the High Lakes Proposal is http://www.parkcounty.us/commissione...highlakes.html . Please go to the site, and comment on this important issue. During the comment period for the McCullough Peaks, we were vastly outnumbered, with only 25% of the comments coming from the motorized community! Please do not let this happen again. Take a few minutes and comment.

Thanks for your support!

COOKE CITY
MONTANA
WYOMING

SNOWS COMING

Morning from Bearclaw/ Bakery and the Super 8 motel. The snowman is calling for a nice dump of snow coming Wednesday. The last snow we picked up was about 3 inches last Sunday. We could see up to a foot of snow by the time its all over.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: From Big Sky to West Yellowstone and Cooke City the snowpack is gaining strength at different rates.

Cooke City has the deepest snow and largest avalanches last week, some 4’ deep. Skiers were still getting collapses there on Saturday and it’s not out of the question to get another today. Think of collapses as avalanches on flat terrain; these are major red flags.

For today, stay out of avalanche terrain if you get collapsing, cracking or poor test scores. Avalanches are still possible and the danger is rated MODERATE. If the storm arrives as predicted, around West Yellowstone the avalanche danger will rise with new
snow and wind.

The bakery is offering a Prime rib dinner for this coming Saturday. She has about 10 spots open if you guys want to come in and have a great dinner. Give her a call and make a reservation.

lost items

Hey guys 16 year old daughters back pack opend up riding from town to Skyline guest ranch Wednesday evening. found some items but missing a go pro some notebooks and a cell phone if found please post back or call text 406 799 9570. Thanks

yesterday post.

Afternoon from snow packed Cooke city. Well guys, the snow dance worked again. A big thank you for helping. The snowman gave us about 10 inches of snow yesterday. He's told me that we should see another 10 inches by tomorrow morning with another 5 inches for Friday.
The weather clears up for a couple of days and then a week from today more snow moves back into the picture.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: As more snow and wind impact the area today, very dangerous avalanched conditions exist. Natural and human triggered avalanches will be likely on wind loaded slopes which have a HIGH avalanche danger. Human triggered avalanches are likely on non-wind loaded slopes which have a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger.

All the spots for the prime rib dinner has been filled.

Friday morning

Headed out to plow all over again. The snowman gave us over a foot of snow in town. Friday's forecast is another 5 inches today. Saturday has a 50% chance of more snow. Monday through Wednesday we should see partly cloudy skies. Lets keep up the snow dance.

The new avalanche report isn't out yet, but I would suggest to be very careful out on wind loaded slopes today. I"ll update when I get back in. Have a good day.

another long day

Evening from Cooke city. The snowest group has arrived and they are all having a good time. We at the Super 8 and Bearclaw would like to say THANK YOU for your business.
The snowman is calling for Sunny skies tomorrow and 30% chance of snow for Monday.
The Top of the World is awesome. Still has lots of untouched powder.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The southern Madison and Gallatin Ranges and mountains near Cooke City got to 2-2.5 feet of snow equal to 2-2.5” of SWE since Wednesday. The snowpack in these areas is handling this load well, as Doug found in Bacon Rind on Thursday. However, more snow equals more avalanches, and this recent snow was no exception. Yesterday, a large natural avalanche was observed on the Fin near Cooke City, and skiers reported collapsing on lower elevation terrain. A layer of facets buried 2-4’ deep is stronger than it was a few weeks ago, but avalanches on this layer are easier to trigger with the weight of the recent snow. New snow, wind and natural avalanches mean avalanches are easy to trigger, and the avalanche danger today is CONSIDERABLE.

Terri had a good turn out for the prime rib dinner. She says Thanks for coming.

Clear skies

Morning from the busy little town of Cooke city. The snowman is calling for clear skies for the next 3 days. Then look out, the snow moves back in for Wednesday through Tuesday. Keep up the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: In Cooke City and the southern Madison and Gallatin ranges avalanches breaking on a weak layer of facets 3-4’ deep are getting harder to trigger, but recent observations show they are possible. A large natural avalanche was observed on the Fin near Cooke City on Friday. Before the recent 2-3’ of snow, riders in the southern Madison Range had unstable stability test scores. Doug had similar findings at Bacon Rind on Thursday. In addition, wind has drifted snow into small wind slabs near ridgelines that are easy to trigger today. Avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE today.

Its still going to be a busy day today and Monday is a holiday for some people.
Have a safe ride up on the mountain.
Top of the World is great, lots of guys are headed up their.

A quick update on conditions would be much appreciated as we are due to head out there tommorow.

snow,snow,snow

Morning from Cooke city, where the snow piles are getting deeper. We are still in a winter storm watch until Friday midnight. The snowman is calling for another foot of snow today. We could see winds up to 65mph. This will cause major drifting on ridge tops. Tomorrow they are calling for partly cloudy skies.
Sorry its been a couple of days since I've posted. I've been either plowing snow or busy in the shop.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Snow and wind throughout the day will allow wind slabs and storm slabs to grow in size and distribution. Wind loaded slopes will be the most prone to producing human triggered slides. Watch for fresh wind slabs on the leeward side of ridgelines and cross loaded terrain features. Cracking and collapsing of the new snow are obvious clues of instability. Today, wind loaded slopes will fail easily under the weight of a skier or rider and should be approached with caution.

Last but not least, slides still have to the potential to fail on weak facets buried 2-4’ deep. Earlier in the week, skiers west of Cooke City experienced cracking/collapsing and observed a fresh avalanche. This layer also produced unstable results in stability tests north of Big Sky on Wednesday. Although this deep instability is gaining strength, slides failing this layer can’t be entirely ruled out.

Today, human triggered avalanches are likely on wind loaded slopes which have a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger. Non-wind loaded slopes have a MODERATE avalanche danger. The danger could rise on all slopes if the storm continues through the day.

We let you store your sleds in a heated garage at night. You can work in the garage with limited tools.

I've got another shipment of BCA link radio's in.

long day plowing

Afternoon to everyone from Cooke city Mt. The snowman gave us about 12 inches in town and the same on the mountain. We will see partly cloudy skies today and sunny skies tomorrow. By Tuesday we will have a chance of snow for 5 days.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Today, human triggered avalanches are likely and the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.

Cold and clear skies

A chilly morning here in Cooke city. The temp was at 4 below at 6 am. and the high will be 13 above. The snowman has changed his mind for the week. We could see an inch of snow for Monday. Then Tuesday through Saturday we could see cloudy to partly cloudy skies. That is if the snowman doesn't change his mind again.
I would have to say to start up the snow dance again.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Avalanches breaking on facets 2-4’ deep are becoming less likely, but are possible and could be large. This weak layer is most unstable and likely to trigger where the snowpack is 3-5’ deep or shallower. Skiers near Cooke City earlier this week saw avalanches and had large collapses on this layer. Be cautious of steep slopes where the snowpack is relatively shallow or highly variable.

Today, avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes and MODERATE on all other slopes.

snowing

Morning from Cooke city. Came down stairs and found it lightly snowing. Keep up the snow dance. The mountain could use another foot. The Top of the World has great untouched snow. More to come tonight. Have a wonderful day.

not sure

The snowman was calling for 4-5 inches today. We picked up about 1 in town. We have another day Monday for a chance of snow. For Tuesday a 50% chance and Sunny for Wednesday. Thursday through Sunday is back in the picture for snow.

AVALANCHE CONDITONS: Avalanches breaking on facets 2-4’ deep are becoming less likely, but are possible and could be large. This weak layer is most unstable and likely to trigger where the snowpack is 3-5’ deep or less. Doug found unstable test results on this layer at Taylor Fork yesterday, and Eric found similar in the northern Madison Range last week. Be cautious of steep slopes where the snowpack is relatively shallow or highly variable.

Today, avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes and MODERATE on all other slopes.

Have a great evening.

partly cloudy

Morning from Bearclaw / Bakery and the Super 8 motel. We've seen a trace of snow overnight. The snowman is calling for partly cloudy skies today. For the rest of the week we have a chance of snow.

Livingston is in a high wind advisory till Thursday afternoon. Gust up to 55-65 mph.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Throughout our advisory area southwest winds are blowing strong at all elevations, not just the ridgelines and loading will occur in gullies and other fetches mid-slope. Yesterday, drifts were reported to be 1-2’ thick and today they’ll be even meatier and easily triggered. Over the weekend we had two skiers caught in the Bridger Range when they triggered wind-loaded slopes, one on Naya Nuki after a failed ski cut resulted in an 800’ ride, and another smaller avalanche on the Throne. Wind-loaded slopes were also triggered in Taylor Fork and natural avalanches were seen outside Cooke City.

In addition to wind slabs, weak, sugary snow 1-2’ off the ground is a concern. This layer broke in one of my snowpits in Taylor Fork on Sunday, but not in others. The spatial variability between weak and strong slopes in close proximity to one another can be confusing. This is why we recommend digging and testing before getting into avalanche terrain.

For today, strong wind is creating a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger on wind-loaded slopes. All other slopes have a MODERATE avalanche danger.

Would like to thank everyone that has used the shop or for me to work on your sleds. It is a pleasure meeting new people.

Clear skies

Morning,,,, The snowman is showing snow to move in by this afternoon. We could see up to 5 inches by tonight. The chance of snow still goes through Sunday.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The wind is strong, gusty and loading slopes. At the ridgelines it is blowing S-SW, but will be swirly everywhere else. Gullies, road cuts, roll-overs and other fetches will have wind drifts that can avalanche. I’m certain Cooke City has many wind-loaded slopes.

For today, strong wind is creating a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger on wind-loaded slopes. All other slopes have a MODERATE avalanche danger.

Would like to remind guys that we do have a sign out front of the building showing what the avalanche conditions is for each day.

If your looking for BCA radio's, I've got more coming in tomorrow afternoon.

Snow

Morning from Cooke. Yesterday was another busy day at the store. Along with the bakery. The snowman didn't give us much snow in town, but the mountain received from a 12 to 18 inches of powder. At this time we are getting light snow. The mountains still has a chance of snow till Monday morning when it turns partly cloudy.
Keep up the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: In the last week, skiers and snowmobilers have triggered wind slabs through the advisory area, and a large natural avalanche was observed near Cooke City.

For today, avalanches are possible and avalanche danger is MODERATE.

We've gotten the BCA radio's in. Stop in and check them out.
