Bearclaw Bob's

Is there any snowmobile guides in town? Never been to Cooke City and thinking of coming out this year.

still snowing

Morning from Cooke city. We picked up another 3-4 inches in town. The mountain has received any where from 1 foot to 4 feet. It all depends where you are. Again Round Lake received about 4 feet yesterday.

The snowman is calling for a 80 % chance of snow for Saturday , with 6 below tonight. Sunday will see blue skies with a high of 17. Monday we are back in to a 80% chance of snow.

Livingston and Billings are in a winter storm warning until Sunday at 2pm.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Today, the main avalanche concerns will be wind slabs and loose snow avalanches (sluffs). Wind slabs will be most prevalent in terrain leeward to west-northwest winds. These slabs will be sensitive to human triggers and have the potential to entrain large volumes of snow once they get moving. Loose snow avalanches also have potential to pick up heavy amounts of snow once they get rolling in steep terrain.

A secondary concern is avalanches failing on a layer of facets buried a few feet deep. This layer hasn’t been highly reactive, but has produced signs of instability and few recent avalanches. Yesterday, Alex was in Cooke City and did not get this layer to propagate in stability tests. However, a few recent avalanches have been observed around Cooke City that appear to have failed on this layer. This problem is tricky because the strength and distribution of this layer is highly variable. It’s worth digging down a few feet and doing a stability test before committing to steeper terrain.

Today, wind slabs will be easy to trigger and the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes. Non-wind loaded slopes have a MODERATE avalanche danger.

Hope everyone is having a safe weekend.

Sunny and cold

Morning from a rigid cold Cooke city. At 1:30 am it was 15 below and at 8 am it was 17 below. The snowman is calling for a high of 11. For Christmas day we can see a high of 18 and a low of 4 below. We do have a chance of 3-5 inches of snow for then. The rest of the week through the weekend has a chance of snow each day.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Secondary to wind slabs, there are some slopes where it is possible to trigger an avalanche on a layer of facets 2-3 feet deep. I rode around the mountains near Cooke City the last two days and searched for unstable snow without success. Eric looked for this layer at Taylor Fork on Thursday, and also found stable snow in his snow pits. A few small avalanches have been observed on this layer of facets and it is weaker in some areas (W. side of Bridgers). It is worth digging 3 feet to test for this instability before riding steep terrain.

Today, wind slabs are easy to trigger and the avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on wind loaded slopes and MODERATE on non-wind loaded slopes.

I hope everyone will have a great Christmas tomorrow. i won't be reporting tomorrow since I'll be at a different location.

Don't forget that the PRIME RIB DINNER on NEW YEARS EVE. Call in for a reservation. The dinner has all the sides, plus dessert.

I've got another 20 more BCA radio in stock if your looking for one.
We rent and sell every thing that deals with AVALANCHE
EQUIPMENT ( will fill AVY bottles )AND BCA RADIO'S.
The garage was a great hit when its this cold. We let you work on your sleds in a warm garage with tools. Come check us out.

SNOW SNOW SNOW

Afternoon from snow heaven. The snow is over the hood and hitting you in the face as your going through it. What a wonderful site. I would say its 4-5 feet deep. The snowman is still calling for more snow (80%) Wednesday. With a high in the mid 20's and low in the teens.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Yesterday, skiers to the west of Cooke City triggered an avalanche (no one was caught) that broke under new, windblown snow and another skier south of Cooke City found similar instability

Stay clear of wind-loaded slopes since avalanches are likely to be triggered. Cracking or collapsing are signs of dangerous conditions.
Dig 2-3’ deep to an ice layer that formed over Thanksgiving (you can’t miss it) and do a stability test. A clean break indicates instability.

For today, the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE on all wind-loaded slopes and MODERATE on all others.

Hopefully no update here Bob due to all the snowfall / extra workload to remove.

Are you ok?!

WOW

Its been a very very busy couple of days. Morning from snow loaded Cooke city. The snowman has blessed us with lots of snow these last few days. This morning we've picked up about 9 inches of snow in town with heavy drifting. The mountain has windshield deep snow. The forecast for today we could see another 15 inches of snow by midnight. The weekend is for more snow.
Be careful on the mountains today. Stay away for wind loaded slopes and well known avalanche areas.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The equation is simple around Cooke City today. Heavy snow and strong winds are creating very dangerous avalanche conditions. Over the past 24 hours, Fisher Creek Snotel site has received close to a foot of snow totaling 1” of SWE. Snow amounts are higher at upper elevations. Yesterday, a skier got cracking and collapsing on lower elevation slopes near town. Skiers also triggered a few small avalanches a couple of days ago. These are obvious signs the snowpack is having trouble adjusting to the heavy load.

Today, continued snow and wind will create a perfect recipe for avalanches. All wind loaded slopes and avalanche run out zones should be avoided. Steeper, non-wind loaded slopes should be evaluated carefully and approached with caution.

Today, natural and human triggered avalanches are likely on wind loaded slopes which have a HIGH avalanche Danger. Non-wind loaded slopes have CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger.

Don't forget about the PRIME RIB DINNER for NEW YEARS EVE. Call or stop in for reservations. It will melt in your mouth.

The shop and store has been very very busy. I'm glad I have Howard here helping me this year.
Did everyone have a great Christmas and get what you wanted, we did. Stop in and say HI and get a free cup of coffee.

Nice snow. Wish I were out there too!! Looks like cooke is the place to be. Hope it continues. Excellent song!

Thanks

I wanted to give Bob a quick shout out. Was in town a couple weeks ago and ate at the bakery, great as always. I bought a new snopulse Highmark spire vest from Bob to upgrade from the Highmark backpack I bought from him a couple years ago (awesome bag but wanted to try a vest). Bob gave me a smokin deal on the vest, and the vest absolutely rocks. So comfortable compared to the backpack, I didn’t even feel like I was wearing an avi bag. Bobs got the goods!

WOW<WOW<

Evening from arm pit powder snow. The snowman out did him self this time. But it was everyone that helped with the snow dance. Most of the snow on the mountain is up to your arm pits. I would suggest not to get off your sled. You'll be stuck along with the sled.
The snowman did a complete turn around. You will start seeing blue skies for tomorrow. The temps are going to start getting cooler. The high will be 15 with a low of 3 above.
For Monday the high will be 13 with a low of 5 below.

WE ARE STILL IN A AVALANCHE WARNING TILL 5:15 am.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Since Wednesday, the mountains near Cooke City received over 4 feet of snow equal to 4” of snow water equivalent (SWE). This rapid, heavy load combined with strong wind makes natural and human triggered avalanches likely today. Yesterday, large wind slabs were triggered by snowmobilers from adjacent flat terrain and multiple natural avalanches were observed. On Thursday, a skier triggered and was partially buried by a 2’ deep, 200’ wide slide in Sheep Creek.

Today, the avalanche danger is HIGH on all slopes. Avoid all steep slopes as well as connected, less steep terrain below.

Tomorrow is the big day for a PRIME RIB DINNER. Stop in for a reservation. The bakery has a few spots left.

Great video right there is what I call throttle therapy can't get it no better than riding fresh powder in the mountains and in this great country. Thanks for the invite but have to pass maybe in two weeks

Morning from cold Cooke

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE. Well guys we aren't as cold as most places up north. We have a temp of 5 below. The snowman has put us down for sunny skies till Friday. Snow moves back into the picture for Saturday and Sunday.

Mom's motor sports has made it back in town. Glad to have you here. OH, forgot to thank you for all the snowmobile parts.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Today, avalanches are easy to trigger where the snowpack is relatively shallow, such as lower elevations and southerly aspects, or most slopes in the Lionhead area. Yesterday, skiers near Hebgen Lake reported widespread collapsing and cracking, and similar findings were reported near Cooke City. This is bullseye data that weak facets 2-4’ deep can produce avalanches. Avoid steep slopes in areas where the snowpack is relatively shallow, or if you see cracking and collapsing

Large wind slabs that linger from the recent storm are possible to trigger near ridgelines and near the edges or base of cliffs. Moderate wind today will form small, fresh slabs near ridgelines that are easy to trigger, but pose minimal threat.

Avalanches are easy to trigger on weak facets where the snowpack is relatively shallow, and avalanche danger today is CONSIDERABLE.

Top of the World

Guys are making it up to the Top of the World, but they have no base. They also have over 100 inches of just powder. Most guys have rode the hwy. to get to the junction.

Lost Bag on trail outside of town on New Years Eve.

Sorry Bob for hijacking your post.

I had a bag fall off of our sled last night on our way out to the parking lot it happened right out of Cooke City in the moguls. Someone may have picked it up with some of the clothing items in it. If you if you picked it up please contact me I'd like to get some of my stuff back. I did find a few things on the trail one of my cell phones that have been run over but I'm glad to have that back and a few articles of clothing. But the bag was missing and some of the other clothing that was in it and some medication.
If you picked it up please message me on the form and I would be more than happy to pay for all the shipping and a little bit of reward money for getting it all back.
If you want to drop it off at bear claw Bob knows how to get ahold of me.

Thanks,
Allen

P.S. The Prime Rib was excellent.....

warming up

Morning from Bearclaw /bakery and the Super 8 motel. The snowman is going to start warmer temp's by the end of the week. Looking at snow to move in for the weekend.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The snowpack is stabilizing quickly, but not on all slopes, and not equally. You have to assess each slope individually, which means digging and doing a stability test in the absence of collapsing or cracking. Eric was in Cooke City yesterday and saw more avalanche crowns in one day than ever before.

Today, I do not expect to see natural avalanches, but human triggered ones are possible and the danger is rated MODERATE, a “spicy” moderate is what I called it in yesterday’s video. Spicy because although the likelihood of triggering an avalanche fits a moderate rating, I’m being conservative and traveling as though it’s rated considerable.

The prime rib was a great hit again. Hope to see every one this coming New Years Eve.

Everyone is welcome to post anything they would like on this site.
I hope some one turns in your lost items. If they do, I'll give you a call.

It was a wild and crazy week for the holidays. Would like to thank everyone that has come up to Cooke City. Come back again.

Top of the World

Morning from Cooke city. The temps have warmed up to 3 above this morning, with clear skies. The snowman has changed his mind for the snow for the weekend. He is now saying we could see a chance of snow for Saturday. Then it turns partly cloudy for the next 4 days.

AVLANCHE CONDITIONS: Now is a tricky time. As stability gradually improves, it will become easier to push it in steeper, more dangerous avalanche terrain. Under these conditions, it can take finding the right spot on the right slope to trigger a slide. This means that multiple skiers or riders can hit a slope before it avalanches. Tracks on a slope do not indicate stability.

Today, carefully evaluate the snowpack and treat every steep slope as if it could slide. Although stability is gradually improving, large human triggered avalanches remain possible and the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE.

Be careful out on the mountain this morning, slopes can slide.

The top of the world is crusty and wind blown. I would say that at least 30 people was up their having a great time.

Snow Dance

Its a warmer morning in Cooke city. Everyone from Bearclaw / Bakery and the Super 8 motel, says HI.
The snowman has raised the percentage to 70% for Saturday and Sunday now has a 30 % chance. Lets start the snow dance this morning and keep it up over the weekend.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Today, careful snowpack evaluation, conservative terrain selection and clear communication between group members is essential. Large human triggered avalanches remain possible and the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE.

Looks like another day of being busy. It was a mad house yesterday. Thank you everyone.
