Bearclaw Bob's

5 days to go`

Afternoon from Sunny Cooke city. The snowman has change again. At this time he has added another day in his forecast. He has put Tuesday the 19th on for a chance of snow. He has up the percentage on Sunday to 60 %.

Keep up the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Conditions are generally stable, but it is important to continue safe travel habits. Expose no more than one person at a time to avalanche terrain. Practice clear communication and identifying safe zones. Take time to practice with your rescue gear.

Today, a generally stable snowpack without recent snow or wind-loading makes avalanche danger LOW.

The bakery out did her self again. Busy morning and a very busy last night for dinner. The #1 one seller for last night was the Mac attack. Great stuffffff. MMMMMM

The garage is open any one to work on their sleds or if you need help or parts. I have them for Ski doo and Arctic cat. Great prices around.

We do fill Avalanche bottles and rent or sell equipment. Check out our prices.

We will be closed Monday's for a supply run. See ya Tuesday.

3 days left

Morning to everyone. We've seen no new snow for a week. The snowman again changed his mind. He removed Friday and Tuesday off the chance of snow and raised the chance of snow to 70% for Saturday and Sunday went down to 30%. For today we can see temps raising to the upper 30's with sunny skies. Get your shades out. :face-icon-small-coo
Fisher creek snowtel has 56".

We are loosing snow days, someone isn't dancing.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: It did not freeze at the ridgetops last night and may not for a couple more days. The mountains around Cooke City and West Yellowstone have below freezing temperatures this morning, but will warm this afternoon. Across our forecast area the snow surface will get moist on sunny slopes and I expect to see pinwheels rolling off steep slopes along with a few small, wet loose avalanches. While seemingly inconsequential, a small wet slide could push a skier off a cliff or into other high consequence terrain.

For today, the avalanche danger is LOW. But as stated above, be wary of wet avalanches on sunny slopes and dig to the ice crust before committing to avalanche terrain.

I've got 30 more BCA radio's ordered and they should be in today.

Snowing

Morning from Bearclaw / Bakery and the Super 8 motel.
Well the snowman was right, It started snowing here about 11 am. THANK YOU , THANK YOU snowman and the guys that are helping with the snow dance with me.
The weather is going back to Sunny for Thursday and Friday. The chance of snow for Saturday went down to 50%.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: If today’s storm arrives as expected, backcountry skiing and riding will improve but there will be a price to pay in the form of wind-loading and burying a new weak layer. A few inches of snow and wind may create 6-12” wind slabs at the ridgelines that could be triggered during and immediately after the storm. Additionally, the last 8 days of high pressure created a layer of small-grained facets (weak snow) at the surface which will get buried and cause avalanches in the future. This layer is not widespread, but once buried it will require a bit of hunting to find. Stay tuned.

For today, the avalanche danger is starting out as LOW, but could rise with today’s snowfall.

Don't forget about the FREE AVALANCHE COURSE AT THE SUPER 8 it will be at 6:30-7:30 pm in the conference room.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday is dinner at the Bakery. If your looking for a home cook dinner stop in from 5pm to 7pm. You won't regret it.
If your going to be here on New Years Eve and want a prime rib dinner. Call to reserve your spot to eat.

The BCA radio's showed up yesterday, so I have a great supply again. Stop in and check out the price.
Don't forget we carry parts for Skidoo and Arctic Cat. Yes we do have spaces to work on your sleds. :face-icon-small-hap

Thanks for all the updates

4 of us leaving Friday an will be there Friday night. Look forward to staying there. Our first trip to Cooke

sunny

Morning everyone. We had overcast skies this morning and now we are seeing the sun coming up over the mountain. We picked up about 2-3 inches of snow in town and 4-5 inches on the mountain over night.
The snowman is calling for sunny skies for today and tomorrow. Then on Saturday we are back to a 70% chance of snow. The weather has been bouncing around these few day. Sunday is partly cloudy and for Monday through Wednesday we have a 30% chance of snow.
Keep the up the good work on the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: The main concern now is the layer of near surface facets that got capped by the new snow. Yesterday, I found this layer to be well developed on the west side of the Bridger Range and Doug found this layer in the Taylor Fork . We do not have a complete record of where this layer exists, but it’s safe to say it can be found in all mountain ranges. Its distribution may be dependent on aspect and elevation and we’ll be tracking it as we spend more time in the field. Although this layer is not creating widespread instability at the moment, it will be something to pay close attention to as more snow falls this weekend.

Yesterday’s snowfall did not add significant stress to the snowpack. For this reason generally safe avalanche conditions exist and the avalanche danger is rated LOW.

Dinners on for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Come in and get the same home cooked meals that everyone is used to.

Overcast

Afternoon from everyone in Cooke city. The morning turned out to be really busy.
The snowman has tomorrow up to 80% chance of snow. Then Sunday will be partly cloudy. But by Tuesday through Thursday, the chance of snow is back.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS:Moderate wind and only a couple inches of fresh snow will not increase the avalanche danger today. The snowpack is mostly stable, and avalanches are difficult to trigger. Small, isolated wind slabs may be found near ridgelines, and will pose minimal threat unless they are triggered in steep, high consequence terrain.

The main concern is weak facets that just got capped by a couple inches of snow. Doug found this layer in the Taylor Fork on Wednesday, and we suspect it exists on slopes throughout the advisory area. Although this layer is not creating widespread instability at the moment, it will be something to pay close attention to as more snow falls this weekend.

Today, generally safe avalanche conditions exist and avalanche danger is LOW.

The bakery has a great line up for supper tonight. The menu is Chicken or Shrimp scampi Alfredo, meat loaf w/mashed and the soup is homemade Turkey noodle. It starts at 5pm till 7pm.

Keep dancing

Morning from Cooke city. The snowman has been generous with the snow this morning. Woke up to 3 -4 inches and still falling. It should have only been 2 inches.

The forecast for Sunday is Sunny and Monday through Friday we have a chance of snow.
Fisher Creek snotel is showing 58 inches.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Today, human triggered avalanches will be possible on wind loaded and non-wind loaded slopes. In areas where the new snow has been deposited over a weak old snow surface, it will be possible to trigger small soft slab avalanches in steeper terrain. These slides won’t carry a tremendous amount of volume, but they could easily catch and carry a skier or rider into unfavorable terrain. Watch for signs of instability such as cracking/collapsing and avoid slopes where these signs are present.

Fortunately, this storm did not arrive with a heavy amount of wind, so wind loading won’t be a major concern. There will be small isolated wind slabs near the ridgelines, but these should be easy to recognize and avoid. In the Bridger Range, wind slabs that formed prior to this storm could still be a problem. On Thursday, a skier triggered a wind slab on the Football Field south of Bridger Bowl that ran over the cliffs hundreds of feet below. Today, these older slabs should be more stubborn, but they’re something to keep in mind when traveling in the backcountry around the Bridgers. In all areas, manage you’re terrain carefully.

Today, human triggered avalanches are possible and the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE.

Blue skies

Morning from all of us at Bearclaw / Bakery and Super 8 motel. The snowman watched out for us. He gave us about 8 inches of snow on the mountain yesterday.
Today we can see blue skies which will make a great day to ride.
When Monday comes we can see at least another 3-5 inches of snow by that night. Tuesday and Wednesday we can see a 50% chance of snow. Thursday partly cloudy skies. Look out for next weekend. We are going to see the temp's dive at night to 7-11 below.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: Moderate westerly winds will drift this snow into slabs up to a foot thick that are possible to trigger today. These slabs are most likely found near ridgelines. Evaluate terrain for the consequences of being caught in even a small slide. Approach wind loaded slopes with caution or avoid them altogether.

On non-wind loaded slopes the snowpack is generally stable and avalanches are not likely. The recent snow buried weak layers on some slopes, which will be a future problem, but pose minimal threat today without a significant load. Today, the avalanche danger is MODERATE on wind loaded slopes and LOW on non-wind loaded slopes.

New Years Eve is right around the corner. This means that the bakery will be having her great prime rib. If your going to be here and would like to come dine at the Bakery. Please call and make a reservation.

Its been a really busy weekend for everyone in town. I would like to thank all of you that has came in to see all of us. Have a safe drive home.

Late night

Its been a busy day. Its been snowing since 8 am with wind. I was on the mountain at 7 and lots of drifting. Howard went out about 4 pm and found about a foot in places with drifting up over 4 feet. The snowman is calling for another 5-8 inches of snow Wednesday and for Thursday we will be sunny, Then Friday we have another storm coming in with a 80% chance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: In the southern mountains the wind has not been very strong, but this may change with today’s storm. At Lionhead on Friday, Eric found a thin, weak and faceted snowpack (snowpit profile) which will become unstable with more snow. Outside Cooke City the snowpack is 4-6’ deep and stable, but on Sunday I found a weak layer of sugary facets 4-6” under the surface that will produce avalanches when loaded with more snow or wind slabs.
For today the avalanche danger is rated MODERATE, but could rise to CONSIDERABLE with today’s storm. This means that the ability to trigger avalanches will rise from possible to likely.
Don't for get about the FREE avalanche class on Friday night at the Super 8 motel at 6:30 pm.

The Bakery is having her great PRIME RIB DINNER, NEW YEARS EVE. Call for reservations.

I'll leave this right here

Long days

Morning from Bearclaw / Bakery and Super 8 motel. It was a very busy day yesterday. Didn't get back until 9 pm last night. Plowed till noon and went to town to pick up a new tire for the wrecker.
The snowman gave us a foot of snow in the lower areas and at Round lake we saw a good 4 feet of fresh powder.
The snowman is calling for sunny skies today. But watch out, the snow moves back in on Friday with a 70% chance and for Saturday a 40% chance with a low of 10 below.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: On non-wind loaded slopes, small soft slabs and loose snow avalanches (sluffs) will be possible in steeper terrain. These problems will be more likely in areas where the new snow fell on a weak layer of near surface facets. The tricky about this layer is it does not exist on all slopes. We know can it can be found on the west side of the Bridgers and certain areas around Hyalite and Big Sky, but we did not find it on Mt Ellis two days ago. It’s worth digging down a foot or more to assess the new snow-old snow interface.

Today, human triggered avalanches are likely on wind loaded slopes which have a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger. Non-wind loaded slopes have a MODERATE avalanche danger.

Get ready and make your reservations for the great tasting PRIME RIB dinner on NEW YEARS EVE. Give us a call.

The garage has been busy storing sleds at night and working on sleds.

I am looking at coming out after Xmas. Is race gas available in town?

Rode Buck today, it didn’t get nearly as much as Cooke. The snow was really weird, some slopes are amazing and others could slide at any time. Our weather has been really odd lately. Be careful, avalanche conditions are different on every hill.

Race gas

I don't know for sure if anyone has race gas. I bring my own. If it is there it is expensive.

More snow to come

Morning to everyone. Cooke picked up about 4 inches of snow and I'll be up on the mountain this morning. I'll give you a update later.
The snowman is calling for more snow today with highs in the mid 20's. The snowman is calling for a chance of snow through next week.
Keep up the snow dance.

AVALANCHE CONDITIONS: This scenario also plays true with the mountains around Bozeman, Big Sky and Cooke City. We know there is a layer of facets buried 1-2’ deep with sporadic distribution. This layer caused cracking/collapsing and recent avalanches in the mountains around Cooke City a few days ago. It has also caused signs of instability in the mountains around Bozeman and Big Sky.

As the storm continues today, human triggered avalanches will be likely on all slopes. For this reason, the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE.

Two more days until Christmas. Hope you haven't put off buying your wife or girlfriend a gift.

PRIME RIB DINNER NEW YEARS EVE. If your going to be here and want a great dinner, call to get a reservation.

The garage was packed again last night. Lot of bent a arms. At least I had enough in stock to fix them.
