back shifting question

how fast your clutches shift back down into a lower ratio.

When you accelerate your primary closes, pushes the belt up which in turn pulls the belt down into the secondary (opening it) this inturn puts the sled into a higher gear like sprokets (distance around) when you let off the throttle the oposite happens which puts the clutches into a lower gear (backshift, or like downshifting), the rate of how fast each of these actions happen is rate of upshift and backshift.

Backshifting refers to your clutches ability to sense that you are now pointed up a steep hill instead of flat ground and will backshift into a lower gear perse to keep you at peak rpm and horsepower. A sled that does not backshift well will hit the bottom of a hill at 8000rpm for sake of arguement and start falling futher and further on it's face until you are only pulling 5000rpm. Make sense? There are many other scenarios as well, but that should get you understanding what backshift is in a nutshell. :beer;
