The lower left side of my back has been hurting all week. This morning I was getting ready for work and my back let loose and it went completely out. I was incapacitated and if I moved even a little the pain was excruciating. I need help getting up or down, and the pain is horrible. I am now going stir crazy from being cooped up all day, and it looks like tomorrow will be the same. I go see the chiropractor on Monday, hopefully it willl help......this sucks.

Has anyone else ever had back problems, and anyone have a fix?

I once had terrible neck pain and a shrinking wallet, I just threw her out on her ear and my pains went away:)

back pain sux. you need to get i figured out if it is muscular or skeletal....go from there.

lower left like 4 in above belt line and 4 in from spine? if so that is a kidney stone.....go to the hospital your gonna feel like you are giving birth......

Chiro's can help but sounds like you need a visit to the doctor and an MRI. I went through similar for years. Had a badly bulging disc L4-5 on the sciatic nerve on the left side and ended up having surgery on it in May '07 although physical therapy is the first step and should help a lot.

Seriously, forget the Chiropractor and go see an MD...........For starters......Don't mess around........Don't take any pain meds prior to seeing the Dr. He or she will need to know how you feel and where the hurt is..........

Sounds familiar. Hurt my lower left back on Jan 16 sledin. Finally went to the doc Thursday, had an MRI yesterday. Get the results Monday. Doctor thinks it's the joint that hooks my spine to my pelvis, or something of that nature, slid outa place or muscle tear.

I feel your pain hopefully you have a speedy recovery!

I have a bad back and when I feel it starting to go out, I definitely need to get into the chiro. Otherwize when it goes all the way out, it takes 2 weeks and several visits to the chiro. to be back to normal. When it goes, the muscle spasms make it impossible for the adjustments to hold for more than a day or two at a time. If yours is out of adjustment, a doctor is a complete waste of time except for prescribing pain meds.

Sure, advise this guy to do the hocus pocus thing instead of seeing a real doctor. Not smart.

I read your thread to my wife (who works for an orthopedist) and she said it sounds like it's a strain to your SI joint (sacroiliac). Causes a lot of pain but settles down with ibuprofen (Advil), heat (thermocare wrap) and rest. Sometimes it's necessary to get a muscle relaxant (Soma) and pain pills (vicodin) to get through the first few days of onset. Gets better pretty fast but should take it easy for a few weeks. Of course, she recommends to see your doctor (doesn't have to be an orthopedist) to rule out other things that can go wrong with your low back. Usually this conservative treatment works if it is just mechanical low back pain and nothing serious (herniated disc for example).

Good luck!

Thanks, From speaking to the Doc this morning and doing some research my injury seems to be what you are talking about. Good luck with your injury.

I am trying to get my workshop done inside my pole barn. I have been hanging OSB board all week on the ceiling and walls, and with all of the snow shoveling it has taken its toll. It's my own damn fault, I shoudn't try to do the work of two men by myself. Someday maybe I'll learn.

I use to think Chiropractors were VOO DOO as well until I screwed up my shoulder. I went to several medical doctors and they all misdiagnosed me and wanted MRI's for the wrong area, wanted to inject needles in my spine, MRI on my shoulder when the pain was on my shoulder blade. I was referred to a Chiropractor that specializes in back problems. I was very hesitant to go see him, but he was the only "Dr" that made the proper diagnosis and helped fix my injury. Since then I few Chiropractors in a different light, and feel very comfortable going to him first. If he thinks it is something he can't handle, he will refer me to the proper MD.

Freshman year of High school I bent over to sit on the couch and felt a sharp pain in my back. Did'nt think anything of it until i couldn't get off the couch. A few weeks later and I was diagnosed with Scoliosis and have to go to the Chiro about ever 2 weeks or so to get my back put back into place. Usually cant sit or stand for more than 40 mins without losing control over my back muscles. It goes through long phases over months of where the pain just kills, and other months its like its not even there. Came to learn that Chiro's are just AMAZING healers!!

I said that "IF his back was out, a doctor is a waste...."

I'll call your "hocus pocus" comment a pretty ignorant one. Chiropractic care is absolutely essential to getting me pain free. I wasted my back 16 years ago and doctors didn't do one single thing except prescribe pills. I had to find a line of work that would allow for my back issues. When my back spasms, I can't even stand straight up, I'm tilted forward and my hips are tilted sideways. I finally went to a chiro and the very simple adjustments that he does have very real results.

I am with Ski on this one. My back goes out 2 times a year on average the pain is out of this world I can't do anything. I go in sore for 2-3 days after sometimes I have to do a return visit but most times I am good for 6months or so.

Not for everyone but Hocus Pocus away if it helps you.

x-rays man....that's always a good start. and make sure a RT is taking them, not a Dr or a Chiro. An RT.

definetaly want to get xrays or an MRI to be sure you know what you are dealing with...i know a guy whos back went out, turned out it was a slipped disc with a staff infection, laid him up in the hospital for quite some time....chiro would have made it 100 times worse....

I agree 100%!!! Everyone I have ever seen go to the Dr. and get surgery now has the joy of limited movement and easily gets hurt again but everyone I have ever seen go to a chiro, my self included, is 100 times better because they fix the cause of the problem not just the problem. People seem to forget that a lot of drug companies give kickbacks for their drug and Dr. make money by doing MRI's and selling drugs, specialists are usually surgins and they make money from surgery so thats all they want to do. I was having knee problems and guess what the Dr. wanted to do? You got it operate even though there was no time of damage or anything he just seemed to think I had torn my minuscus but after going to the chiro I havent had a problem since turns out it was directly related to my lower back being misaligned as EVERYTHING in your body is connected to your spine.
Chiro's make money only if they make people feel better because if they dont feel better they go to a Dr.

Like said above it can be a long process to get the muscles trained to hold your back in alignment because they are so used to holding it where it was but it is well worth the time, most people that dont like chiro's have never been, only been to a bad one, or are Dr's or related/friends with Dr's.

Most of the good chiros will take x-rays and they know a lot more about the spine than an MD thats kinda their area of study;)

Bottom line, everyone kind of believes in what has helped them and that is understandable. What works for some does not work for others because not everyone with a hurt in their back has the same problem causing the hurt. For instance, my wife went to a Chiropractor for years about once a month or so and it always made her feel better. It finally got to the point that it was no longer helping and she was in a lot of pain. She went to a Neurosurgeon and they did an MRI which showed definite problems with her L4-5 and S-1. He refused to operate on her until she came begging he told us. Three years later, she went begging and that was four years ago. He fused her L-4, L-5 and S-1. It was a major operation. She is as limber as she ever was and probably more so. She has not had one instance of pain since that surgery four years ago and she was out riding her sled six weeks after the surgery which the surgeon was not happy about. The surgeon that operated on her is a very well known neurosurgeon and did a fantastic job. Anyone who thinks a Chiropractor knows more about the spine than the surgeon that performed my wife's surgery is extremely naive.

I am not saying a Chiropractor cannot help. It depends upon the problem causing the pain. Ragging on highly trained surgeons is naive at best. My daughter is an MD and works as an ER Doc at St. Mary's in Grand Junction. Comparing her to a Chiropractor is like comparing a Ferrari to a skate board.

Chiropractors have their place but then again so do MDs. The education levels of the two aren't even on the same planet.
