Average Oil Consumption 800 Dragon

Went on an 80 mile ride, burned 1/2 qt of oil and 10 gallons of gas in my old 2000 700 RMK with my brother riding it, 9 gallons of gas and 1/2 qt. of oil for my son on my 2002 600 Classic, 1.75 Qts of oil about 11 gallons of gas in my 2010 D8 which works out to 7.2 mpg and a 25:1 oil ratio. I'll have to carry oil to go on a 100 mile ride which sucks.

Took it to the dealer and they checked it and said it's "in spec". Not really happy about that answer. Guess I better leave behind emergency gear from now on so I can carry oil. I was thinking about a trail tank but I'd then run out of oil before gas.

Matt, I have the factory wrenches if you want to borrow them....

Your dealer and your sled are both smoking way too much something. I get at least three tanks to one bottle of oil.

I burn 3/4 of the tank of oil per one tank of fuel. It used to burn 1/2 tank of oil for 1 tank of fuel prior to the update kit. Looks like I am burning way to much oil!

I went through the same crap with my D7 - it sucked oil like there was no tomorrow (more than 30:1) and Polaris told the dealer not to touch it. I adjusted it myself... As far as Polaris is concerned, virtually any level of fuel economy or oil consumption is "normal". I think it's their way of telling you to "piss off" when they just don't want to fix your sled. Unless you start coming back to the dealer with ice cream buckets full of fouled spark plugs, there isn't anything wrong.

I have used 3 - jugs (1 US gal) in 1150 mies in my D8 - 155. I thought is wasn't using enough but the dealer said these sleds were using less oil than older models.

Well so much for that dealer, engine started knocking and seized on the 1st day of a weeklong trip. Dropped it off at a different dealer and found out that the mag side rod brg. failed. I told them that it didn't use much oil and that the other dealer said it was good. They checked the pump setting and said that it was not correctly set.
3rd time now for this engine to be apart, 1st time (Dec 25/08)mag piston seized, 2nd time (Oct 19/09) 2010 update, 3rd time (Dec 27/09) mag side rod brg. new crank installed. Still waiting for sled, hope to see it next week.

Sorry for the long story, just make sure you're using enough oil.

Wow, that ratio is crazy low! Even if you were getting 8mpg (which is very optimistic) that's 145 to 1.

5 Gallons of fuel to one qt of oil, 20:1....no fouled plugs yet. Sled only has 300 miles on it so maybe a good thing while its breaking in? Will take to my dealer about it mon. Dino

I now have 1030 miles on 09 600 Dragon Switcher, uses 1 qt every 8 gal of gas or so, about 70-80 miles of flat land trail miles. Two different dealers checked out and said pump is spec-on. Second dealer told me the "break-in chip" in computer doesn't burn out til sometime after 1,500 miles??? He promised oil and fuel consumption would get much better.

In high elevation I got about 50 miles to a quart of oil.

Oh yeah, one of the dealers told me if I was worried about fuel and oil economy I should've bought an etech!

My personal opinion is to just tighten up the oil pump slightly yourself, no dealer will do this on their own b/c then their responsible for burn down due to too lean oil.

Interesting to know there's a lot of variation in oil consumption between same sleds in both 8s and 6s

Oil pump adjustment the easy way

---Slide up the rubber cover on the throttle slack adjuster cable on handle bars, near thumb throttle.
---With a white paint marker make a mark on plastic jam nut & the plastic housing.
---Loosen jam nut approx 2 to 3 turns, turn in the plastic adjuster to shorten adjuster length, creating extra cable slack for both the oil pump cable & throttle cable.
---Remove air box.
--- Raise the throttle cable at throttle body cable adjuster on top of throttle bodies to reduce throttle cable slack. This then will leave extra cable slack at oil pump arm.
---Then fine tune throttle thumb lever slop at the throttle cable adjuster near thumb lever.

I'm at at 40:1 ratio of 1 qt of oil per tank of gas using this method.
