Average Oil Consumption 800 Dragon

Ya i blew up a ECU at 300 miles, but all is good now. I guess that's one way to get the new mapping. I can get about 70 miles on a tank of gas, w/ fairly aggressive riding.

Just ran some oil and gas numbers on my stock 09 D8 155:

214 miles / 34g gas => 6.3 mpg

Just under 1-1/2 qt oil / 25g gas => 70:1

Seems pretty light on oil - thinking I should be adding some to the tank til I get the pump adjustment figured out...

My 08 D8 is on second engine, first one seized 750 mi, it used very little oil, not sure if this was ultimately the problem....1,000 mi on new engine and consumption is consistent 1 qt per 10 gallons of fuel + - , wifes 08 RMK 700 uses slightly less but close to mine....we ride at approx 10,000'. My new engine has run flawlessly and hope it continues this way.

oil consumption

Has this thread really been on here for a year?:eek: My 08 D8 155 uses a little less than a quart of oil per tank of gas. I agree with Alaska800 that this sled uses less oil than any other sled I've owned. Two things I think are kinda unusual about this sled: first, the operating temp (120 degrees) seems low, but others say that is where theirs run too, and second, it doesn't seem to use much oil. I wonder if this has to do with EPA emissions--leaner oil means less polution? Could running less oil contribute to the seizures?

I rode last weekend and acutally paid attention to this issue out of curiosity. I rode back without adding the xtra gas I brought along - made it back to the trailer with fumes - oil consumption was between 1/4 and 1/3 of a tank.

I have used the polaris ves gold oil since new, and run nothing but shell v power gas.

My Dragon 8 did this same thing for the first time, got 60 miles to a tank of oil. I took sled in for other issues and told them about this problem. Dealer discovered a lose nut on the oil pump.

I use Polaris Synthetic Gold oil and I've ridden around 750 miles and I've gone Thur one galleon of oil. I was wondering if this was enough also. This is on my 2009 RMK 800 163.

Miles are completely irrelevant. You need to know the gallons of gas used to calculate oil ratio. Also the oil ratio is going to vary somewhat based on the throttle position during the ride.

What skibreeze said ^^
Take a sharpie and put a mark on your oil resevoir. Fill to the line. Fill your fuel tank full and go ride.

On the way home fill the fuel tank again and record the gallons used. When home fill the oil resevoir to line you made with the marker. Make sure to measure how many oz. of oil you needed to fill. I'd suggest one of the wife's liquid measuring cups from the kitchen. You'll score big points with her ;) I use a ratio-rite. Do the math.

More on topic... My wife has a 08 RMK 600 and I found it was using oil to the tune of 19 to 20:1. On more than one ride. Her riding it and/or me riding it. So, I have the sled into the dealer for vairous other items and asked them to check it out. Turns out the pump was set up correct but half the time it wouldn't "return" all the way upon letting off the throttle. It was sticking. They think there was a burr somewhere hanging it up, or a bent shaft on the pump or something. They replaced the pump.

Now it uses oil at about 32 to 34:1. Dealer said the spec range for the 600 is 28 to 40:1. Says the 600 mill runs hard for a little motor and probably will use more oil (ratio wise) than the 700's or 800's. Don't know if I agree with this or not but whatever.

Smokey Dragon

My 08 D8 is using a excessive amount of oil. Last tank calculated to 20.5 to 1 gas to oil ratio. Sled smokes like a mosquito fogger and leaves oil trails in the snow.

The sled fouled two plugs on the last ride....both on the mag side. Two other identical sleds on the trip use the same brand of oil and use just less than half the oil I used.

I dropped the sled at the dealer yesterday and they say the the pump is adjusted perfectly.........

Now what? Any ideas?

Thanks

Thanks Guys..... I didn't think that could be right...... but the dealer is toping off the oil tank and sending me for a ride this weekend and they want to measure everything consumed in the alotted amount of miles per Polaris instructions. Anyone know how to adjust this your self? I'm fimilar with the old style polaris oil pump adjustments.

your sled should burn 1 quart of oil for every 10 gallons of gas......so on a whole tank of fuel..just over a quart..adjust it down.....

I'd be having a long conversation with the dealer to let them know that 20 to 1 is not normal and they need to figure it out asap.

Went on an 80 mile ride, burned 1/2 qt of oil and 10 gallons of gas in my old 2000 700 RMK with my brother riding it, 9 gallons of gas and 1/2 qt. of oil for my son on my 2002 600 Classic, 1.75 Qts of oil about 11 gallons of gas in my 2010 D8 which works out to 7.2 mpg and a 25:1 oil ratio. I'll have to carry oil to go on a 100 mile ride which sucks.

Took it to the dealer and they checked it and said it's "in spec". Not really happy about that answer. Guess I better leave behind emergency gear from now on so I can carry oil. I was thinking about a trail tank but I'd then run out of oil before gas.
