Avalanche in Fairveiw.(happy ending)

We were in Rolfson and Staker that day and the Avy danger was HIGH. We were playing in Staker for about an hour when 3 other sledders came over the hill and started doing stupid stuff on the hills. Right when they showed up, one guy gets stuck about halfway up an east-facing hill and his buddy goes and turns out right above him. That was the first of many mistakes we saw them make in just a few minutes, so we decided to leave before they brought the entire mountain down on us all. Just as we were leaving I looked over my shoulder and saw a slide coming down the hill, exactly where the guy had been stuck. They all got away with nobody caught, but it just ticked me off how they were being so stupid. I went over and told them a couple things I noticed they were doing wrong and made sure they at least had beacons on. I told them how they shouldn't go highmark above someone stuck on the hill and they all just said "yeah, we know". I looked at the slide and thought to myself "obviously". They were clueless. It was pointless in trying to teach them something because they acted like they knew everything and just didn't care. So we decided to just stay away from them. The only camera I had with was my blackberry, so I only got a sketchy photo of the slide. It was about 50 yards wide and close to 100 yards long. Really wind loaded up top, so parts of the crown were close to 3' deep, but mostly about 1' deep where it wasn't as wind loaded. We're finally getting snow on the mountain, but it's really unstable, so be careful when you're out there and please use your head!

I was not there, I was up here riding that day. Where we saw a slide that was cause by 2 sleds on the same hill, they weren't with us. Everything I wrote was told to me by Garrett that night.(not sure if you remember, but Garrett was with us on our early lake creek adventure.;))

His sled was partially buried.

Yep, I remember. Really glad it didn't end differently.

We should ride again.

So as we roll into canyon after canyon and see where you guys have knocked off multiple slides, and then you come over and try to give me your words of wisdom after I knock ONE loose. You guys had put tracks all over every knarly chute in the first three canyons.
Then some dude comes up to us at the trailer and asks if we were the guys that were out SETTING off slides. Do you really think that it was our soul intention to go out and knock off some slides?
I will admit that I was wrong in jumping above where my buddy was stuck!
But that was the first slide I had set loose all day.

Garrett is heading to Baja this weekend to ride the 1000 mile run.

But you know I'm always down for a ride. I'm going to head out friday,
Saturday I am riding with the Avy Class.

One other thing I just heard from Garrett, His sled was beat up pretty bad.
It folded his riser and bars during slide. I'm still amazed at his out come.
But the one thing he did do right was fight the entire time.

So, you admit to seeing other fresh slides and you still rode on a slope with a stuck person on it? WOW!

1st slide you had set off all day? That's a pretty casual attitude don't you think?

I really think that you need to reconsider a few things here. Just 2 days ago here in Co, a skier was killed in an avy with only a 200 foot runout and suffered a lot of trauma in that very short ride. When seeing recent avy activity, you and your group need to communicate with each other and ride smarter before somebody gets killed.

Hey duke1n, since you don't agree with my post, let's hear your take on it. You are a real piece of work.

I apologize to whoever was offended by my post - I was trying to learn more and maybe make a bit of a point regarding preparedness. I'm happy that Garrett came home in one piece. And yes, we only get a forecaster in the area and do a report once per week, but we also count on all of you to send us your reports - if we get a bunch of reports, we can update our forecast before we travel down there. Plus, a lot of people are looking at the Current Conditions section within the advisory - if you look there and see a half dozen close calls reported the day before, you know you are headed into a scary situation.

We can only cover so much ground. The more you all tell us about what you are seeing as soon as you get home or phone service, the better our reports get, which helps everybody.

Be safe this weekend - conditions are not getting safer.

You don't even know me so STFU. It happens every year on WhineWest. Avi's are triggered followed by the sanctimonious outcries of the holier than thous. Sledding in a dangerous sport. When one poster complains that he saw someone doing stupid stuff that is his personal interpretation. My guess is James was blasting around and jumping this wind lip and dropping that cornice. Good for him. I see it all the time. There is a plethora of people that won't even ride with me because I'm "dangerous". Just because your vagina prevents you from riding like someone else don't get on the innerweb and cry about it. James is better rider than just about anyone I know which means any and all of you on here. Stop lecturing and the sanctimonious whining. He admitted that it was a mistake to ride over his stuck buddy. He's a lot nicer than I am. If some jacka$$ would have confronted me in the parking lot I would probably popped him.

I don't have to know you, I've read enough of your posts to get a clear picture. The "vagina" comment cracks me up, I'm sure that many of those that I ride with will tell you that I am nuts on a sled, but there is a big difference between crazy and out right stupid.

By your post I knew you were defending a friend of yours, so obviously your view is more than tainted and it is no wonder that a lot of people won't ride with you.

Finally, nobody here is crying. Forgive some of us from trying to educate others. Forgive us from trying to get the light to come on in your little head. I have been on scene at an avy that claimed a life, I was there watching the wife's reaction to her husbands death. Forgive me for trying to HELP others. The only thing you do is name call and give bad post ratings, you are pathetic.

First off, I was the one asking if you were the ones setting off the avy cause I heard you were from Denver. I was just asking casually to start a conversation in the parking lot at the end of the day...don't take things so defensively. Second of all, watch your assumptions cause you're just making an *** of yourself. Our group didn't set off a single avy (because we were riding smart). We saw the other slides you are referring to and they were set off from earlier groups ahead of us, NOT US! If you had been paying attention, you would have noticed that we got the hell outta there when you know-it-alls showed up and put on an ignorant display of riding/avy skills. IT ONLY TAKES ONE AVY TO KILL YOU! it doesn't matter if that was your sole intention or not or how many avys you had or hadn't set off prior to that. When somebody offers avy advice after you trigger one, take it instead of getting overly defensive. Being a d*ck about it is like cussing out a guy trying to throw you a rope while you're drowning.

Certainly not the Utah section.......

But he is fitting right in with the typical Utah highjack.;)

no thread is safe in the Utah section.:face-icon-small-hap
