+1 for Nova Guides. Can do half-day or full-day rentals, got two d6's when my parents were out here last year. Hard to get lost at VP.

That and the Ritz Carlton over in Bachelor Gulch are the best of the best in that neck of the woods. Good choice.

;-)

Beaver Creek........pimp'n ain't easy.

Yes it is a public riding area. If you are only going for one day Monday would for sure be less crowded. Night and day from the weekend. But if you are able to be flexible I would wait and pick the blue skied day after a huge dump of fresh :D

my wife was at a conference for work and won 3 free nights at Beaver Creek, the other choice was the Bahamas, it's a good thing I have a great wife, cause I don't like the sand and heat, this will be our first time in Colorado and if we have a good time I'm sure we will be back and I'll bring some friends, keep the advice coming, thanks again, ron

tudizzle, that was great. I busted up laughing when your girls started skiing to Cake. Good family video.

food when riding in Vail Pass and what about the huts?

what do most people do for food if they are riding Vail Pass for the day, I've been looking at the map of the area and don't see much of anything around, do most people pack a lunch or something? just wondering, In NY where we ride there are restaurants and bars to stop at and warm up and eat, also what are the huts for? I see them on the map, but since I've never been there I don't have a clue? thanks for the info, see ya, ron

. Shrine Pass road goes from the lot right off I70 back to Red Cliff. As soon as you get into town, there's an open area to your left, that's mango's sled parking lot.

Train tracks run from Pando/Camp Hale (Nova Guides) up to Red Cliff; it's not marked on the maps but it is rideable.

I can put together some GPS tracks if you'd like.

Mango's is excellent. I really doubt you will be disappointed. They love the sled heads too! If we dont' eat there we just pack a lunch and find a nice spot on the hill to grub down.

Seems like most people out east think sleds are just the way to get from one bar to the next during the winter........we actually use them for sledding out here  ;)

Is that the place with the big fireplace/pit? They got some good grubb and are super sledder friendly!

we only stop at the bars to eat lunch and dinner, we don't drink and ride, I don't drive 6 hours from my house to sit in bars all day, we leave at 8 in the morning and usualy don't get back to the hotel until 10 at night, we usualy average 150-200 miles a day in NY, so yes I like to ride them too :), see ya, ron

X2 - Mango's in Red Cliff is great. Been going there since it was a tiny little dive. They since have remodeled, and it looks great. They have even given us a ride back up to the water filteration plant when there was not enough snow to ride all the way down into town.

As far as I know, the huts are only accessable by non-motorized traffic. PM me with your e-mail and I can send you a PDF of the trail map. Vail Pass is a pretty well marked trail system with plenty of off trail opportuinities.

There is a company that rents sleds that is always in the parking area delivering them. I do not know the companies name, but someone on here should.

As far as traffic, at the busiest days there, they can only accomidate 50-75 rigs in the parking lot - which equates to about 100-150 sleds on the trails. Yeah it may be a little congested near the parking area, but you rarely run into a bunch of sleds while riding. On the other hand, a busy day trail riding in the midwest you may see 500 + sleds in a day and get stuck behind a slow rider for 10 miles or so. I have been riding out in Colorado for close to 10 years now and have not experienced that yet.

If you get out to Red & White where Piney rents, they have a nice lodge accessable only by snowmobile or cat. They have good food, and have been real good to us.

Enjoy your trip.
