im 20 years old and work on average of 55 hours a week as an electrician in a Methane Field here in Northeast Wyoming. When I get home I work on guns for another 5-6 hours at a local gun shop for a second trade. Then I get on here and post whore and check pm's (I also do this from my field laptop while working in my truck). Today it rained alot, so I got a free day :D

Id love to clone myself and send some hard working, good looking motha truckas all over to help bring this economy up. But hey  im a limited edition :face-icon-small-win 1 of 1

wheres my wadders.its getting deep in here.:)

Many of the shops ive worked for, If you work hard and show up every day. They will give you bonuses and extra's. Thats not the reason i bust butt but it does give some people more incentive to show up and work

I'm paying between $32 and $37 per hr for operators and it's getting harder and harder to find quality help. I usually go through 10 to 15 people before I find 1 good one.

Most of why you cant get good workers, is because you dont pay enough. No one can live on 10 bucks an hour anymore, not too mention most construction jobs are a haul of a drive, and moving to new locations, means more driving, meaning more fuel costs. Another thing, is the laziness, no shortage there, but when I interview anyone, they have to agree to a 2 day try out only, cash payment. Then I send them home and call them if I want them to come back, no questions asked. It works well even though I tell most after the first day to stay home on the 2nd.

I start my pay at 15 an hour. I have since weeded out all the pretenders with this practice. Pay more, get better work force, pay less.............get all the crap that is leftover. If you are in the contracting biz and you are busy, you are making big bucks like I do when I am busy, so pay it forward.

Another thing is benefits. I pay for my main guys health insurance, it is a perk for sticking around and doing good work.

If you pay someone well, and treat them well, they will always show up, and want to learn more and advance to a higher level, simple as that.

You are partially right to a point. I used to run 4 crews, then went to three, now I'm down to barely two. Here's how I pay

Two lead guys one at $30.00hr second @ $24.00hr
two apprentices both @ $17.00hr
Laborer's start them at $13.00hr if their good bump them to $14.00 instantly

I also give each a 1 weeks paid vacation and a year end 5% bonus of their total wages at Christmas. I'm far from the greedy employer that wants to hord every Nickel.

I've went through three guys in the last few days that I started at $13.00hr that really didn't know sh!t and told all three of them I would bump them up no questions asked if they showed up for work on time and did their job well to $14.00. The first of the three didn't show up on the third day, no call nothing still haven't heard from him 26yrs old average at best, second guy was lazy as a Cub Bear, was 20 minutes late his first day, 15 minutes late second day, fired him the second day 29yrs old. The guy I hired this morning lasted 7hrs. The third guy was the worst! He was 48yrs old, called me saying he really needed a job, had framing exp and would take anything. I told him I had work available and the starting wage was $13.00 but since he had some exp I'd start him at $15.00, keep in mind this guy tells me he needs food and gas money, just wants to get working would take anything to get his foot in the door. So I get him lined out with my crew and three hours into the job he starts telling one of my other guys how he may just fall off the plank and kick it on an L&I claim, not to mention all he wanted to do was talk and d!ck the dog, moving at a snails pace and seemed to just want to run his pie hole. Anyway things just kept going from bad to worse so at 3:00pm my lead guy calls me and says, "this guy is poison, he needs to go now." Money does motivate some, but not even close to all. I've kept some really good guys around for many years with paying good wages, but what I've been noticing over the last couple years is, people are just flat out getting lazier, with a you need me, more than I need you attitude. This country is turning into a you owe me a lving society and it's really pathetic..............

Might explain the throngs of Mexicans showing up on job sites!!????

Bingo

I wonder if part of this has to do with the massive bombardment to teens from the media about getting rich quick and that sort of thing. I know I have had many friends that had all these plans to make money, and yet they screwed around there jobs that they did have instead of taking advantage of the work they were doing.

Some people get rich, some get rich quick, but most of us have to put our time and then some in to live comfortably.

My opinion is in the "save gasoline!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" thread.
This p!sses me off to no end.
Anyone ont he Western Slope, CO looking for work. I'm in Snowmass. Starting laborers $19/hr, OT, full benefits, $1500/mo perdiem. No experience req'd. Just valid ID, SSN, drug test, show up to work every day and ..........................................................................WORK!
PM me.

Startin to think I need to be changing jobs. I work 50-60 hrs a week on the low end and work more if needed without any issues. I've volunteered for any schooling they've wanted to send me too. I work on call nights and weekends only charging them for time spent working nothing for the inconvience of my family. After six years I finally got to $19/hr. Reading this thread is really making me think I need to be back in construction.

Labor will always be a issue. Espeically now that everybody wants it on a silver plate and is not willing to work for it. Between workmans comp, lazy employee's or employee's who are hard on equipment and do not care, it makes a employer if it is worth it.

Hell, you're only 70 miles away from me. With that kind of mind set, I'll start you out for more than what your making for your current employer your first day. Lol

disco-you have it figured out to keep guys like me around. I took a 10k a year cut to work for an employer that treated me like I felt I should be treated. I stayed with the first guy only for the money. he was paying $35.86 on the check plus benes and ot was double. he hated paying us that, but was contracted to do so. I listened to him complain for 7 years before I had enough. I quit to make $25. my new co treats me like gold. I watch out for them, I am always running cost analysis' on everything I have an effect on.....it's not my job, I just do it. I am a tradesman with three journey cards so I feel I can be picky about who I work for, they know that and want me to stay, I appreciate that......it is very perpetual. screw your guys they will get it back from you over and over and over, if not in theft then in loss of production. treat your guys well and see what happens.

I work in construction, I expect to get laid off every single year. my new co has never laid me off. I told them that I completely understand and that they do not need to worry. they told me the same.....and kept me working. so in the end I end up making as much $$, am WAY happier, and I have never felt like more of a valued part of the team. when a business owner of a multi million dollar company knows your family by name, and invites you to partys and dinners, you will know he appreciates you as much as you appreciate him.

What, don't you want to be CEO the first day on the job? Oh, and have a golden paycheck which is only half as much as the expense account? All of which you "should" get without any work ethic or education? I'm glad I don't work for myself any longer and I know my boss likes having me know how to work. Well sometimes..:devil:

Everyday I deal with my kids, I wonder what I can do to teach them good work ethic so they don't end up like many of the people we have to deal with...like politicians and engineers...
