Seems anymore not many want to work for a living. Not sure how other states are for hiring, but it seems to get harder and harder to find quality people. I know where I'm at, all there seems to be are lazy pieces of sh!t, I'm thinking our welfare system has a huge part in this. In all my years of being in business, I've never scene it this bad. Never dreamed my biggest problem would be finding help, it seems getting the jobs is now the easy part. So if anyone on here actually has a drivers license, motivated, lives in Wa. St and is interested in a job remodeling houses PM me. I'm looking for younger guys that want to learn a trade..................:face-icon-small-win

I just started working for a start to finish contractor here in SD.(im 18) so far after a month ive seen 5 people not show up. Starting wage is 10 dollars which is good starting wage around here. My boss told me they can't find help here either, they have hired 17 people in the last 4 months that didn't even show up on the first day.. At this rate i can be a forman in no time :) lol

Keep showing up on time, learning the trade and you will be a foreman in no time. Glad to hear you're responsible, most young guys aren't this day and age. Wish you lived in my neck of the woods...........:beer;

I am afraid its like that everywhere here in NM all of my fellow businessmen are struggling to find help .Recently a freind of mine sent a group of 32 peolpe for drug screening and 4 passed. why the hell would thhey even go take the test? I always wondered if it was like this everywhere else. I guess so I hve utomated to overcome the shortage but most industries dont have that option! the bright side is If you are a respectable person that works for your living and wants to get ahead the world is open for you and wages will follow.

lol.. I had a young guy 19, show up last week to start working. I told him before he started that he may have to work late and long hours depending on the weather and job at hand. well his first day he shows up around 9am, then we shut down at 6pm. I asked him how it went and what he thought. He said, well.. I cant do it. the hours are to much for me. I am a family man he says. He goes on to say he has been there and done that and that and that he could make $35/hr laying stone. I gave the young buck a speech about how now is the time for him to be working hard in life, but he didnt want to hear it. I dont get it either.. I think it has alot to do with how they are raise now. parents giving them everything they want.

I had a moving business and understand where you are coming from. I treated my guys as good as I could but still had HUGE turn-over. My disposable income would sure be a lot higher if I'd not sold it but what's left of my hair would be a lot more grey. Props to the guys who get (and KEEP) good help, they are the minority.

When we hire guys in there late teens to early 20s 9 times out of 10 they are worthless.

When we hire people over 25 9 times out of 10 they are worthless.

No one knows how or wants to work hard or learn anything these days.

It's really sad, I read this, remembering working as a laborer on construction jobs. I've done most of it when it comes to concrete, curb and gutter, sidewalk, flat work, tilt-ups, foundations.... and so on. Got out of it and went into ironwork throwing bar for a small traveling operation. Owner died and I got a hairbrained idea and joined the Marines (anyone who's done any of these is probably seeing the trend...... enjoys punishment :D). Really I just ejoyed hard work and seeing I got something done at the end of the day. But other than the Marines I made damn good money at what I did.... well except for my first laborer job that guy was just satan in a straw hat!! Anyway, now I work behind a desk in a technical computer job, and we have the same issues here. Guys who show up.... sometimes..... don't care about their work, work at a snails pace, and have it in their mind all jobs are exactly 8-5 and no more. Don't know where all the hard workers went and where desire left people, hell if I could swing it I'd come to work for you during nights just for the extra coin..... and to learn something new :D

i know a guy that pays excellent wages to start and trains young people and they are 99% good workers because they are making good money.maybe something you owners should try?

What? You seriously think it might be an owners thing for paying lower wages and getting lower workers? Seems to make so much sense that it must not be right. :D

Ain't that the truth !wages wont do it! i would pay a guy 30.00/hr " IF" I could find just one person that could do the job! I have given up looking!Me and dad thats it!

ya i probably should have asked first, how much does it pay?:)my friend does 16-20 an hour to start in construction.and has about 12 good kids.

The company I work for pays better than anyone around and still can not get decent help. The thing is it is not even hard work. People are just getting lazier.

Most of why you cant get good workers, is because you dont pay enough. No one can live on 10 bucks an hour anymore, not too mention most construction jobs are a haul of a drive, and moving to new locations, means more driving, meaning more fuel costs. Another thing, is the laziness, no shortage there, but when I interview anyone, they have to agree to a 2 day try out only, cash payment. Then I send them home and call them if I want them to come back, no questions asked. It works well even though I tell most after the first day to stay home on the 2nd.

I start my pay at 15 an hour. I have since weeded out all the pretenders with this practice. Pay more, get better work force, pay less.............get all the crap that is leftover. If you are in the contracting biz and you are busy, you are making big bucks like I do when I am busy, so pay it forward.

Another thing is benefits. I pay for my main guys health insurance, it is a perk for sticking around and doing good work.

If you pay someone well, and treat them well, they will always show up, and want to learn more and advance to a higher level, simple as that.

im 20 years old and work on average of 55 hours a week as an electrician in a Methane Field here in Northeast Wyoming. When I get home I work on guns for another 5-6 hours at a local gun shop for a second trade. Then I get on here and post whore and check pm's (I also do this from my field laptop while working in my truck). Today it rained alot, so I got a free day :D

Id love to clone myself and send some hard working, good looking motha truckas all over to help bring this economy up. But hey  im a limited edition :face-icon-small-win 1 of 1

Montana is not much better, always get a bunch of guys, Young and older that dont like showing up, or show up late.

Getting harder to find good people to work in construction trades

Getting harder to find good people to work in construction trades

I think that this is the bottom line^^^

We have had a very high turn over rate on our job aswell, young, mid, or old, seems to make no difference, some people just don't wanna work (or at least work hard) I consider my wage to be pretty good right now, 3.5 years in and making $22.09 with d@mn good benefits on top of that:D You could say that I take my job pretty seriously;)

Just comes down to that old saying...

"WORK hard, PLAY hard"

Dan what kind of buisness are you in. I drive thru deer river sometimes

I read all the posts on here about not being able to find good help and call me crazy but maybe it has to do with the hourly pay and by this I don't mean the rate I mean paying by the hour. I worked for a res. builder in logan, learned a ton but would get pissed when I would work my @ss off and make the same as a guy that did 75% of what I did. Moved to a custom cabinet shop, moved up in postions but the pay didn't increase with em. So still ended up getting pissed that I was putting more work in and it didn't show when it came to pay day. So I found a job that pays piece rate. Been doing it for 5 years now. Do I like the job, its ok, but I do like that when I bust my @ss and work harder than anyone else and produce more my pay check reflects it. IMO hourly wage creates laziness in the age group of 20 to 30. We are smart and realize hey if I can get paid for just putting in my time and only give 60 or 70% then why give 100%? Maybe try paying guys piece rate on things, could help keep the good hard workers around. May not, IMO it works better.
