Any other handicapped riders out there?

One of the gals...yes gals I ride with in the mountains lost a leg in a motorcycle accident a few years back. Lost it just above the knee. She rides on just the stub and I tell you what, the only it times it bothers her is IF she gets stuck and has to have help to get her sled out and going again. I will ride with her any day! It is great to see you folks not let anything get you down. There is alot to be said about a positive attitude and mind over matter. :beer;

Many of us in No Utah have seen SledGimp outride lots of folks with no disabilities. I have been on the wrong end of it once myself.

here is my pal Ty(goinvert) on here. He is also para'd from waist down from 16 years ago on a bike accident. Sledding is his newfound passion!!!!

I figured there were others with health issues but I am overwhelmed,I can,t believe there are so many.
I sure hope these posts will help others that are not active because of heath issues as all of these posts have proved if you put your mind, effort and a little inginuity we can over come almost anything.
Hows about we make a extreme video of different types of handicapped riders?
Might be good therapy for freshly injured riders, just a thought.

Thanks for sharing,
Dave

You can look for me in the Boondockers movie next summer, would have been in it this year but blew up my left hip catching air.

WOW .... awesome to read .was riding in a play area by our local warming hut up LOLO pass and after a bunch of us "new Friends" stopped to warm up
only then did I realize one young man around 14 had only one arm
The Kid rode right with us
I am going to get this to his parents I think he would love to know of others like him able to keep ridin

...Wow..never knew there were so many handicapped riders not just out there but on this forum! My hat is off to you folks! Im sure you will/have influence(d) many other riders that are paralyzed/handicapped or not !

Again my hat is off to you!

Ride Safe!

Hi all,

As the winter comes in ad we start getting in some riding lets all post some pics and if you have any mods or special things you do to help you ride post that with some pics also.

Another T-4 paraplegic here. Been riding since 2000 I guess, havent posted much here lately but was pretty active a couple years ago. Been injured since 89.

Currently have an 05 summit sitting in the yard (about all its done for a bit but hope to change that this winter) I also asphalt race, current sled is a 99 mach z. Its ran 10.2 at 127mph at our local track, I was in first place most this last summer but chocked at the end :D

I do my own repairs and mods...nothin to it but to do it.

Good for you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was about to do a little whining because of my age, Not now.
Besides I guess, according to my riding buddies, half my age, I'm going with even if I'm stiff and cold.
I guess they'd rather pull just me out of a stuck, not me and my sled.

just had a thought about this yesterday if something like this happened to me. props to u guys and gals that overcome the difficulties and odds and keep shreddin. I was in whistler this year for kokanee crankworx and i seen a BLIND man race downhill mtn biking. it was insane he just trusted a rider in front of him to give him directions. i could not imagine myself jumpin or flyin down a mtn with blindfold on.

i've ridden with the professor before and after his accident and he is a blast to ride with. Even though hes paralyzed from the waist down i've still seen him make it up hills while the rest of us are stuck or rolling back down it. he never takes the easy way up the hill or through the trees and he always manages to make it though. I just wanted a chance to say thanks to him for showing me that if you want to do something you can and you shouldn't let anything stop you because the only thing holding you back is the thought that you can't do it.
Watching you has made me a better rider. Thank you for that.

One of the guys I ride with lost a leg from just above the knee down. He rides with the best of them. Never holds the group up, even came out to the under ware tree on Lions Head. It is funny at the hotel after the ride, at the hot tub when he pulls off his prosthetic, it gets a lots of looks and some great conversation.

Hey I have a question for you guys with the t-4 (chest down) injuries...

Do you have any sort of special seat set up to help keep you the sled?

How about keeping your legs in the footwells or on the running boards?

My best friend who I rode dirtbikes with and who taught me how to ride in the mountains got injured in a motorcycle accident a little over 2 years ago. He was back out riding on a polaris razr within 6 months, and he has tried sledding a few times but finds it very tiring as he has only his upper body to keep himself upright and on the sled (no ab muscles), and though he's in very good shape its frustrating for him. We are trying to figure out a solution that would keep his butt in one place on the seat and also a way to keep his feet/legs from bouncing and falling off the boards.

So far we thrown the idea around of getting a custom seat made with a dip in it sort of like a horseback saddle and also considered covering it with velcro and them sewing velcro on the seat of his Klim pants. Keeping his feet in place is a bit more difficult as he obviously doesn't want to fall off the sled and have a foot caught if the sled is rolling down hill...

Would love to hear some suggestions from you guys who have overcome these difficulties. :beer;:beer;:beer;:beer;

We are making a seat for the Professor that will be like a old Harley seat. All dished out.No velcro because than he can't adjust himself. We will see how it will work.

I'm your Huckleberry...

Lefty, and everybody else -

If it's in Island Park after the Holidays, you can use my cabin as the warming hut - if I can ride with you. I make a better 'remote cabin host' than powder champion boondocker anyways.....

I would also welcome any Vets returning from the Sandbox to come to the "Lucky Dog."

Sincere,
Stovebolt
off-list PM's and e-mails welcome

I started riding after I lost my left arm (above elbow) on a bike. Having grown up on bikes I felt as if I was missing somthing. I started snowboarding to fill this viod. While on a trip to Jackson Wy., A friend and I rented a couple sleds, WOW I found what I had been looking for! I now live in the Tetons & put on 6-7 k a year between guiding & ridin with the boys! Would love to take part in a group ride with other challenged riders, as I'm sure we could all learn from one one other. I ride with a buddy who's neck has been completely fused & have also rode with another local one armed rider. Any thoughts on where such a ride might best take place. Just an idea, Togwotee.

Lefty
