Albany/Snowies riding areas?????

Me and some friends are heading out to Albany, Wy on 2/4/12 for a couple of days and we have never been there before and are not familiar with the area. Does anybody want to give me some riding area suggestions or locations on some secret spots? We might head to Centennial one day also to see what that area has to offer. Thanks for all useful input. BRAAAAPPPP!!!

I guide would be your best bet if first time. 3C guiding or Nick at Albany lodge both good choices.

Be careful of the marked avalanche areas on the map, and any slopes over 30* right now. We rode last Wednesday and saw several places that had slid from the last big storm.

There is good tree riding out of Albany - I would suggest getting at least 7-8 miles up the trail before you start messing around off trail. If you are staying at Albany you will probably want to pack fuel for a long days trip if you are not planning on going back to Albany for lunch. You could make a trip over to Ryan Park and have lunch and grab fuel over there - it is a pretty long ride over there though.

Trailering around to Greenrock (Centennial) will put you closer to the hill climbing areas and to get to the back (west) side of the peaks where the snow is usually deeper.

If you are lucky enough to time your trip right after a storm you will be able to find good snow on your own near the trails. If it has been a while since it has snowed, a guide may be a good investment to show you some fresh snow off the beaten paths.

Also where is this Widowmaker everyone speaks of? I must check this thing out.

Right smack dab in the yellow avalanche area on the map - the north side of North Gap Lake.

Unless they get a bunch more snow IMO it isn't worth running the rocks through the gap from the east side if you don't know what you are doing and where you are going, especially if visibility is bad. WM is not on a marked trail.

You could come in from the north on trail N-O and run the roller coaster up to the base and take a look though, but as I said in my first post - I would stay clear of all of those areas if this is your first trip out and you do not have a guide. Avalanche danger is high right now and not something to be taken lightly.

Depends what kind of riding you're looking for.

General rule of thumb, especially for 1st timers to the area, if you can't see the peaks when you get to the fork in the road (Albany turnoff vs going up thru Centennial), go to Albany. It can get nasty up top and if you don't know where you're at or where to ride you will not have fun.
