300 love

I was talking about meeting in pipestone this summer and riding it on dirt, snowbike time is hopefully a long ways away.. I'lll gladly meet up and snowbike as well, I'm always traveling around to wherever has good snow, probably not pipestone. For me most of my riding is on dirt and I really hate 4 strokes on dirt, really hate them, I bought a WR450 and then a Ktm 450xc, both of them sucked! I think I could make a 450 work but as of right now the new Ktm xc or yz 450x probably could get me by, but by the time I spend 9-10 grand on a bike, 1000 for a recluse, another 1-2000 on performance goodies, all the crap to make it a snowbike it's starting to make a 300 look a lot more reasonable and a 300 is still going to be better on dirt for what I do. I may buy a cheap 450 mx bike someday for a dedicated snowbike just because they are easy.

As far as the yz 450 vs a modded 300, they are going to be close, in the tress a 300 is going to run over it but in the open they will be about the same. Lt vs st will probably be a bigger difference. I just think the 2 strokes is more fun to ride, they like to wheelie everywhere, the only time a 4 strokes wheelies is if you hit a drift. Lol Every rode a 4 strokes sled and hopped on to a good running 800? Same kind of difference in feel. Both bikes are going to rock, can't go wrong with either! I would like to ride a new yz 450x on dirt just to see...

sx

why not start with a 250sx and put the 300 jug on it? the 250sx's are thousands cheaper (especially the used market) and lighter. you wouldn't have the estart, but thats not that big of a deal on a 2t that size.

Yeah Rush, the snow can holdo off for a few months, dirt biking is still better, regardless of what you say... haha

Starting with a 250sx is a pain in the ***. First off the sx transmission isn't that great, the gears are close and first is tall and 5th is short... you would need it geared for exactly the kind of area you are riding. You also have no battery and a weak stator so lights and handwarmers are a no go... The 300 "sx" kits are not an sx at all, the cylinder, head and ignition are all the same as a xc. So you still need porting, head work and ignition, the 07-12 sx ignition is a lot hotter than a 13+ sx ignition. If you're going for ultimate light weight the sx could be a good route to go though.

the tight trans would be good for snowbiking once you got the gearing right, and isnt the point of the 300 lightweight? so why not go as light as possible. ive been contemplating 300xc vs 250sx and the sx is so much cheaper you could do a tank and an 18 and still be into it less than a 300xc imo

A converted sx would be super fun as a lightweight sx build but the no electric start, no lights, no handwarmers are a deal breaker for me. The transmission might work, but the road speed is going to be really slow with it. I would be fine with a sx on dirt, but on snow I would go xc, at least you have options... the 300 sx kit is about $8-900 now and you still need to do all the motor work. I started with a 250 because it was a lot cheaper but I thought the 300 sx kit was a sx kit not a xc, I wouldn't do it again. Well I guess if I could find another deal like I got on this one I might, I see some 250 xc holdovers for $6800 brand new. The 250 xc is sweet on dirt, I thought it was quicker and more fun than a stock 300.
