Not that I didn't know, but for sure have confirmed why guys are still running 300's in the summer.


The more I ride my new 500, the more I miss the 2 smoker. Gas mileage is great on roads, everything else give me the smoke!

For summer is there another bike;) it's the first bike I have had that I have not lusted over any other machines for summer riding... 2013 ktm with about 430 hours on it;)

WOW. that's an insane amount of hours for a 13. Nice work!!

I have 33 on my new BETA 300RR, and i've only had it since Christmas (no snowbike duty either). I thought that was a lot!!!
 
Yes the 300 is the Northwest favorite single track weapon, hopefully next spring I can move up from my 200
, I just went over 100 hours on my 200 on Saturday, This winter she will get a new top end
 
I agree the feel and power of the 300 is hard to beat on single track and it really shines the more aggressive you ride it. As for snow I used mine for about half a season and it didn't have enough to keep up with my buddies on their 450's. Now that I run a 450 for a dedicated snobike I can tell you the power difference is substantial.

I had a some friends looking at me sideways about running a 300 for single track/hare scramble duty. Saying, why not a 250 or a 200. 300s are too powerful! NOT. I love this thing. Never does it scare me (though it could if I kept it pinned longer!), it chugs down so low its insane, it lofts the wheel on command with no clutch work - but doesn't want to loopout, it turns so nicely, and the Beta just fits me perfect. what a bike! I'm in love. :heart::face-icon-small-ton
 
I want a 300 for the woods SO BAD... such a fantastic bike, especially for the gnarly single track we have around here. The 450 can manage and sometimes it's a bit of a struggle, but the 300 does it in comfort and style. It's no wonder they hold their value so well. I regularly see used 13 300xcw's for sale for almost $8k and people buy them.

I do not use it for winter it is wheels only...... I have a cr500 for the snow I think you need as much power as you can in the snow here in the west;)
 
Agreed, First year on the ktm 300 for me and its the best bike i have been on in the woods period! Well see how it does on the snow this year also. Im going for the lighter is better mentality with this bike on the snow cause i know it pays off huge on sleds. Gonna shave every ounce i can this fall and see how it fairs. Gave the motor a little love too!
 
If you build a 300 right it will outpull a 450 consistantly. In my mod motor i'm replacing pistons at roughly 80hrs on snow and 100- 120 on dirt and they are good still, I just swap them for peace of mind... If you have your fueling dialed they are really reliable. I find I rev my 300 a lot less than the 450, I think its because the 300s builds track speed so fast that it just jumps out of the snow whenever I hit the gas unlike the 4 stroke where you nees to keep the rpms up because it just won't build revs quick enough. The 300 has so much power in the midrange that I rarely have to run it hard, unless im on a long sustained climb.

I do know after riding with Jskattum606 this summer on his new 300 I really have a hankering for one on the dirt. Its such a neat bike with really impressive power band and grunt in the dirt. Tractable power is how I keep seeing its advantages with the wheels on.

Yes in snow. It's pretty easy to pull a bunch of power out of a 300. Basically you need to change the porting, bump the compression, sx ignition, boyseen rad valve with r series reeds, pro circuit pipe and silencer, red power valve spring, 38mm or 40mm carb, costs about $1200 all in and it's a rocket on snow and just swap ignitions and power valve Springs and it's completely manageable on dirt! Or you can spend $660 and have Gorr do a 330 kit and that price includes all parts, porting and head work if you want a little more bark out of it and also the scalavini pipe and silencer is supposed to run even better but it's about $400 for the exhaust. I ride in pipestone a fair bit, your welcome to meet up sometime and take it for a rip so you can see how it runs.

Good to hear! Any recommendations on a company for porting? I didn't really want to go with the 330 kit but wanted porting on my stock cylinder. Thanks for any info
 
I had good luck with the mobbeta porting from Eric I think it's pretty cheap and really gives a good boost in power down low and up high..

I've ridden a couple Gorr motors and I was impressed with his snowbike porting, they were very smooth and had a lot of top end but lacked a little in the midrange IMO, he could do porting with more mid range hit I would think. I had Munn do mine with a lot of mid range hit and I love it on the snow, it will jump up and wheelie anywhere, even climbing in deep snow... with a sxlt! I think any reputable builder can do porting and head work, there's only so much you can do with them. You can tune them a little with base gaskets as well to get them just right. I have to run some race fuel in mine and other people I know that have had Munn do their engines have to as well. I could put in a thinker base gasket and would be fine with pump gas.

As far as the big bore I don't think I am going that route, I think the 300 has plenty of power without it and reliability has been great. I will be putting on the Scalavini exhaust this year though for more bottom end without losing anything on top.

One thing I have learned after building and riding multiple 300s with different setups is that if you don't do everything to them they don't work much better than stock, you have to do all the mods to really get the most out of them.

Running a mod motor I would highly recommend an EGT Guage for tuning and safety. The mod motors really need the NGK br8eix plug, even in dirt it works better with a colder plug, you can run it a little leaner on bottom and it really helps clean it up.

Im just curious where you were talking. Id really like to get together and ride with more guys in the snow, for summer I know they rail even in stock trim, I just can't get myself to swallow the $8k (or more) for a new one and the $1200 or so to make it a fun snow bike.

There is some healthy trash talk going on around the shop as Jskattum606 has his 300 hes doing and i have a '14 yz450 that im doing, budget for budget im really curious how they are going to stack up. I know his is better in the summer, but im curious what an almost $10k bike will do vs a $7k 4 stroker in the winter! And he can burn his down a few times before it costs as much to rebuild as mine, so he does have an advantage there :)
