3" Track for the Pro

So I messed with some numbers and (in theory)...the 7t 3" pitch drivers have basically a 7/32" (just a little more than 3/16ths of an inch) different radius than stock (2.86 pitch 8t drivers). That's not very much.

2.86" pitch 8t: radius is 3.547"
3" pitch 7t: radius is 3.343"

3.547-3.343=.204"
or
7/32=.218"

You are gaining roughly about .21" (depending on which decimals you carry) in clearance by going to 7th 3" pitch.
How much room is there between the lugs and bulkhead with stock drivers and track? Can you actually stuff a 3" lug in that Polaris bulkhead with stock drivers?

You probably could but it is fundemantally wrong, by trying to run the 3" pitch tracks on a 2.86" pitch driver you force the driver to slip inside the track 0.14" (more than an 1/8", but just less than 5/32") per tooth. That equates to a lot of friction, accelerated wear, lost energy and motion. Much like running the correct pitch but undersized Avid drivers. There is enough wear and friction in this area as is with everything the correct size and as perfect as possible, no reason to further handicap your performance.

IMO

FOR SURE!!!!

Absolutely not advocating running it that way...just wondering if it would fit.

Two rides on the center punched x3. Carl's Clutching + the Secret Weapon (Call Carl's and ask about it). I like the track. It works well in the deep stuff that we had last week and the week before. It is markedly slower on the trail due to gear down effect from driver change. It also does not accelerate as hard on the trail. However, it pulls 8300 RPM+ consistently. It packs the skis more so a little body adjustment on climbs is warranted. Trail manners are good and I have not noticed it pushing in the corners anymore than the stock track. I am running the stock Polaris skis and I have no issues with them combined with the track in any of the conditions I have been in so far. I am happy with the track so far. I kept my stock track just in case I decide that I don't like the track although I don't foresee that happening.

I believe some of the complaints about more ski pressure are due to the track staying on top and sled riding flatter, rear of sled dosnt dig down which provides for more sled angle and ski lift,Some suspension changes are necessary to lighten ski pressure a tad.

I forgot to add that I have not had any overheating issues. It runs within 5 degrees of where it did with the stock track when I am on the trail with the scratchers down. I do have a lot of venting which may help with that issue somewhat. I also echo what others said about the hook up. The track allows me to make mid course adjustments that would have left me stuck before I had it. I am 61 and I like to pick my way up without going Mach 6. I ride with the younger guys and I always get where they go. It just takes me a little longer. Too many violent collisions (college football, crashes, etc.) orthopedic surgeries, back and neck injuries have slowed me down a bit so the track is a boon for me.

your track is punched down the middle? helps the cooling big time

Mine is centerpunched and I'm running ski scratchers in addition to the factory scratchers. It still doesn't cool nearly as well as stock.

Where did you get the ski scratchers, been looking for a clean installation, any pics?

I got a set of the ski-z scratchers. They are a blade that mounts under the tail of your ski. They throw quite a stream of snow at your rails, though not necessarily on your coolers. You have to watch them when backing off a deck, but they don't seem to affect handling.

I don't have a picture handy, but you can see them on the betweenthelines website. I heard that company packed up, though. I haven't been able to get a hold of them to deal with a warranty issue...

I did a little experiment with the scratchers this weekend. As stated below I threaded the end of it and on one side i put just a plain nylock nut on BUT the other side I tried something. I took a wing nut and ground out the center of it so it would allow the nylock nut to act as a jam nut also. The wing nut is pointed down so it really digs into the snow and sprays a lot more. I put them down at the truck and it was very hard and icy on the trail and I never got above 130. once we got up higher on the trail where the snow was getting better it pretty much stayed at 125. Just to make sure it wasn't just softer snow on the trail I put both of them up and took off. I didn't make it a 1/4 mile before my temps were over 150 and still climbing. Dropped them back down and was back to 125 within 1/8 mile. Not sure if the nut alone without the wing nut will keep it cooled that low but I'm super happy with this very inexpensive cooling fix.

So here's a pic. It looks silly but super effective. I also used red lock tight on it all. Time will tell if it spins off or not.

Im going to give it a try. Looks like it will help. Thanks for the tip. No pun intended

I do think that the center punch helps significantly with cooling, my X3 isn't any worse for cooling than my 2.4 was, either way you gotta run the scratchers down on the trail. Get enough cooling from cable scratchers with the X3, run 125-130 on the trail.

All depends on snow conditions I guess. I've got the center punched X3, and run ski and rail scratchers. Side by side with a stock identical sled, I was at least 20° hotter. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but you need to be aware of what you're getting into if you put the 3" on a pro.

Your spot on, They do run hotter, Run water wetter it helps. If I recall the 163Poo dosnt have a rear cooler, Am i correct on this? Anyone know what Poo did for the 14 driveshaft, Back to one piece steel?

None of the PRO RMK's run a rear cooler. The standard RMK's do however run a front cooler.

As for the '14 drive shaft; it is the same design as the the '13 with "better QC" they did however send it out clamped this year from the factory (just because).

Ouch, No rear cooler on 3 inch will be hot. My Doo Race 880/3 inch gets hot with two coolers.I have ported just to allow snow to get slung up into the cooler, Does Help, Water wetter dropped 10 degrees or so.
