2022/2023 Alpine Wyoming Snow Report Rockin M Ranch

One day prior to Alpine and surrounding areas most recent snow storm. Unfortunately our trip ended as the newest snow fall started. I imagine it was all time snow though!

February 6, 2023 Alpine, WY Snow Report
Picked up 5" overnight here at the Rockin' M cabins. Rode Saturday before the new snow. Still powder to be found, just gotta get off the beaten path. Some of the lower areas that you may not have thought to ride in past years have awesome coverage this season. Another smaller storm in the forecast for Wednasday and another chance on the weekend.

We picked up about 5” here at the Rockin M cabins Monday/Tuesday. Temps are cold keeping the snow pretty good. Not deep but plenty of soft snow to be found off the beaten path.

2/22/2023 Alpine WY Snow Report Rockin' M Ranch
We picked up about 10" here in the valley the last 72 hours. The storm was warmer around 32 degrees so the amounts go up quickly with elevation. Jackson Hole ski resort is reporting 36" from the last few days. I also had a report from cabin guest that they guessed 18-24" high up in the Salt River range prior to this storm. The bottom line is the higher elevations got pounded this last week. Lots of wind. Avalanche danger is currently considerable. Not the time to be hitting the high basins. Below is copy and pasted from the Bridger Teton avalanche site:

THE BOTTOM LINE

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist and triggering a large avalanche remains likely on many slopes—especially in wind-drifted terrain. Avalanches will fail on a layer of weak snow that is buried 1-3 feet below the snow surface. Avalanches may be triggered from gentle terrain below, above, and to the sides of steep slopes. You can reduce your risk of encountering such a slide by sticking to lower-angled terrain that is not threatened by steeper slopes above. Avalanches are less likely—but still possible—in more sheltered terrain.

Another 6 inches in the valley in the last 48 hours. The storms have been very cold this year. This is the most snow I have seen in the valley in many years, probably since 1997.

Just rode someplace in the valley today. It was frickin' deeeeep! Deepest snow I've ever been in. More than 3 feet of new fluffy snow. Ain't sayin' exactly where just yet, because we're going back for more tomorrow![emoji12].

Here's a pic of my buddy rippin' past me. There's a sled below somewhere....

Nothing to see here!!

For two experienced riders that have never been in the area and are looking to head that way this week and ride Wednesday thru Friday. Where would be a good place to start?

You can ride right out the end of Grey's River Road to get your feet wet.

I highly recommend trying to connect with a local or guide of sorts. Alpine is a bit different than alot of riding areas midwesterners are used to, you start in the valley and many of the riding areas are accessed by ungroomed/unmarked single tracks.

The snow here has went to ****. Warmed up a few days then had a hard freeze. There is a 3” concrete layer now. Had hell with sleds overheating on Sunday.

I already made reservations and it's non-refundable. It's forecast to snow a few inches hopefully that means more up on the mountain.

Alpine is an awesome area you will enjoy. Starting at the Greys River staging offers plenty to explore for days and days.
Plenty of other areas within 20-30 miles of Alpine in every direction with World Class mountain riding. You will not have difficulty finding great terrain!

You gotta get high to get good snow. It gets good starting about 7500-8000. Got another 8-10 in the valley this last week. I would be careful. Lots of new snow on a crust down lower.
