2017 GM HD Duramax

Yeah, I've had three Duramax trucks now. Two LBZ's and an LML (with exhaust brake). The motors and trannies have been awesome in all three. The exhaust brake is a work of art. I come down passes with a big load or no load at all and don't even touch the brakes.

On my 2nd Duramax/Alison truck and agree with the the above on the ability of the exhaust brake.

I agree the duramax is great but the exhaust brake has no comparison to the exhaust brake on a Cummins.

The transmission is far better. GM designed their system to work with the other items on the truck. The brake controller "talks" with the exhaust brake, which also talks with the transmission. You can set the cruise control with a heavy load and it will maintain your speed going downhill and not "run away" on you. Every test I've seen done with the other two brands, they require far more driver braking to control the load and maintain speed.

have you reviewed any tests performed by entities other than GM?

Your statement about the other manufacturers Vehicles requiring more input from the drivers could not be further from the truth!

The fast lane truck for example.
The Chevrolet going down the Ike gauntlet towing 22,150 pounds, the driver had to push on the brake pedal 2 times by the time they got to the bottom.
Now that will impress most people, however, the Ford towing 30000 pounds down the same Hill, the driver never once touched the brake pedal! Wait, there's more! They started the hill at 50 miles per hour, a semi was in front of the truck going 35 miles per hour, the Ford slowed itself down to 35 miles per hour without any assistance from the driver, now that is truly impressive!

Adaptive cruise on the new ford is quite impressive

Adaptive cruise though one of the most fantastic features to come to the automotive world cannot be correlated to the effectiveness of the exhaust brake. As far as I'm aware adaptive cruise control applies the brakes when required. The goal of a well paired grade shifting transmission and exhaust brake is to preserve braking on long grades by minimizing their use thus reducing heat induced fade on your braking system. If the concern is running out of brake by the bottom of the hill running on cruise is probably not the best solution.

Have you read through all the reviews? Because until Ford had the adaptive cruise, it was the worst of the group. I've watched the Ike Gauntlet tests in detail. That's the hill that I drive up and down and was commenting on my GMC exhaust brake. The one I watched said that the GM didn't have to touch the brakes at all and had the coolest brakes in Silverthorne. I'm sure new ones have come out. But that hill is very steep, one of the steepest anyone would encounter on an interstate.

He is correct here. I think GM's exhaust brake works awesome and until recently fords wasn't anything impressive.

I am not trying to say one is better than the other or that i like one more than the other.

Someone related to GM made a false statement and i felt i should make sure they are aware.

More thorough research must be done before making such a statement about their product.

The 2015 and newer GM is a beautiful rig with a great engine and transmission combination without a doubt.

Dead nuts right on this, I was just going back through them when this thread got going. Taking IR brake temps tells the real story.

I've actually drove the trucks. Does that count?

I've gone over the "Ike" gauntlet countless times.

I have not drove a 2017 Ford, so I won't comment on that but in past tests the GM has destroyed the Ford and Dodge in terms of not having to brake.

About me, I could care less what you buy or own. I have no dog in the fight. Just giving honest information.

Edit.. If you're referring to me "being related to GM". You're wrong. I work for an auto dealership. I sell GM. I do not work for GM. I sell used, I sell new. I sell two other brands new besides GMC. Again, I don't care what you buy. I'm not here to sell cars. Chances of me selling anyone here is slim to none. I have sold a couple people on here, but I'm not here to card toss.

Test drove the 2016 and had to upgrade from my 2008 Duramax! LOVE this new truck. Glad I didn't drive the 2017 cause then I would be REALLY broke!!

Milehighassassin,
I appreciate ur knowledge and that u share so much on this forum. If i have any GM questions i would look to u for answers. Sometimes i come off rude, i do not mean too, i have issues expressing myself in a nice manner sometimes. Please do not take offense.
I just wanted to correct the statement u made. If u would have worded it different i would not have felt compelled to respond.

New truck and looks to be a new 850 doo, wow nice to see how the other half lives. Congrats man! Give us some reviews of each once you get some seat time.

Ordered my 17 gmc hd2500 Denali in blue hopefully will be here before Jan 1. Coming from ford super duty.

Looks like gm is having issues with 17s none to be found. I was told would be late January unacceptable in my book. Going to ford dealer on Wednesday see what they have. Gm might as well not have a 17 go right to 18.

Just pulled the trigger on a '17 F350 last week. Amazing truck. Pricey, but aren't they all??

There all expensive no doubt. I have a 12 f-350 that been great but the thing that made me look hard at gmc is ride height, box sides getting to high and ride quality. You have to be 7 ft. Tall to reach over bed rail. Using gooseneck hitch is also going to be an issue with some trailers with ford. A one ton does not need a 4 inch lift block on its rear end.

I think the GMC is obsolete. My '15.5 seems 10 years old compared to the new Super Duty.

The '17 GMC is not much different. Interior is the same. Yes the new Duramax is different, but the rest of the truck is essentially unchanged.

I ordered a super duty, will pick it up Saturday. I test drove 2 before I ordered. IMO they are way nicer and more technologically advanced than the GMC
