2012 Polaris RMK's Running Hot?

RE: Oil consumption

My Pro uses a quart of oil in 120 miles which is the same amount that my previous Poo 800's used('01, '03 and '05). By comparison, I also had '08 and
'09 Poo 700's and they both used a quart of oil in 75 miles. One would think the 800's would use more oil than the 700's. Guess the smaller engines just have to work a little harder. Maybe Poo might supply some info.

Z I have owned 3 RMK sleds before this PRO... 1 600, 1 800 1 700. All of them used a half a tank of oil (roughly 1/2 gallon) for 1 tank of gas. All of my buddies RMK's burn the same amount. That is many times more than my PRO.
Curious indeed.

2012 coolant temp

maybe you should quit guessing and ask your dealer and if he doesn't have the answer you could call carls cycle and ask for the shop manager , perhaps he has the answer. keep in mind you are renting a powder sled not a trail sled, so you definitly need the scrathers and keep the speed up, we can run 50 and more and never heat, weren't built to ride at 10 to 15 miles an hr. xr650r

Install two bolts on the inside of each front ski. Install with washers and cotter key for easy removal when needed. Will work for your application.

Let me guess way hot at 6500 rpm.....?

Polaris is mapping these things way lean in the mid range, All the CFI-4s had the same hot issue. Add a little fuel in the mid range, temps will come down and engine will last longer. Everything else is a bandaid fix.

the older sleds should burn 1 qt of oil to 10 gallons of fuel(40 to 1 ratio)..the pro's run a little less...about 3/4 qt to 10 gallons....

First 5 miles on new sled was icy hard pack road....temps never got above 150 with scratchers down.

Once we got to the snow packed, but still hard, section.....She settled down to about 130. Once we hit the fluff, it was 127 all day long

Scrtachers and IQ snowflap did the trip just fine. :)

Im not guessing. I have talked to my dealer. What you are not getting is when you own a rental business you get to see a more consistent and larger sample of sleds than the average public and the dealer for that matter. I appreciate everyones comments, that is why I started this post. I am trying to get some constructive critisism and make people aware of a problem if they own a standard model 2012 600 RMK not a 800 PRO RMK. I checked again this morning. I had 2 600 RMKs that took 6.5 gallons of gas and 12 ounces of oil. That is 1.8 ounces per gallon. There is no way that at that amount, a two stroke motor is not going to be damaged over time. I hope that Polaris may get wind of this and get a bullitin out to fix a problem. As for the overheating. I am well aware of what scratchers are. I am not an Idiot. I've been riding sleds and doing my own mechanics for 20 years. I've owned/built turbos and big bores. Of coarse scratchers lower the temps and bandaid the problem. THE FACT IS 2012's run hotter across the board. The idea that a standard RMKs should not be used as rentals is rediculous. I have been running 600 RMKs for over 14 years. I have never seen the inside of a 600 motor. They are that reliable. Arguably the best/most reliable sled ever built. I hope to see it stay that way. There probably is a valid arguement that a pro model shouldn't be used as a rental due to less cooling capacity. The point of this post is there are some problems with the 2012 600 RMKs as compared to the last year.

First I have to commend you on your patience and ability to stay on task with some of these comments. It seems like a lot of them don't bother to read all of the posts, or even the first one for that matter!

If I remember right in the most recent issue of SNOTECH they had a blurb about Polaris running new injectors for 2012. I am not 100% as I am at work but maybe that might play into this? Maybe Polaris didn't change the mapping on the standad 600's but went with a different injector and the fuel delivery could be a little different?

This doesn't account for the lack of oil consumption, but could be adding to fuel to the fire.

I'll second that!

Rockin,

Fuel delivery in the mid-range(or lack thereof) would seem to answer for the majority of the overheating issue............Although when you consider the low ratio of oil being injected combined with a questionable cooling system design you have a complete recipe for overheating................

Hope you get resolution from your dealer/Polaris for your issues............

Happy New Year & good luck!

Rockin, as you probably know, the 600's have a new CFI 2 system, based on the 800, on them this year, so there is abit of new territory here for poo on their 6's. They had a 2 injector 600 a few years ago, but I believe it was a very different fuel rail design than the 12, and with very different EPA regs. Oil in the fuel helps with the pistons in the CFI 2, but doesn't help the crank bearing much, as you know, but many may not recognize. No idea whats up with the higher temps, unless they have air that can't get bled out.

Poo is definitely trying to hit EPA targets with the lean fuel/oil ratio, someone associated with a dealer confirmed that last year, may have been MH, and that was a primary driver for the move to Gold Plus in 2011, better lubricity, ability to keep it alive with less oil use, at last for awhile. This was a conscious setting by poo.

You didn't mention what the oil pump setting are on your sleds, but you probably have checked - FYI, I have my 11 CFI 2 turned up with the pump lever mark above the scribe on the pump body, by as least 3-5 degrees, getting 40:1 with heavy throttle use. I also have a long flap from PDI now on a Pro, the scratchers can now keep up with the temps on very marginal snow, lowered them by at least 15-20 degrees over the stock flap with scratchers down, at virtually any speed. Without water wetter. FWIW. Thanks for the heads up. Those riding without a warranty or planning on keeping your motor past warranty, you've been warned to check the pumps and use. Longer flaps work with scratchers in marginal snow, at least on 11's.
