2011 m8 or 2012 Pro RMK

looking at getting a new sled not sure what is better..I have had an 09 M8 and enjoyed it.Don't think i want an 012 Proclimb, since 1st yr model...
Cat i know have really good motors with very little issue's but the Pro RMK seems to come along way and should be great in 012...

Has anyone rode both sleds to compare and which did you like better?

I have ridden both a lot, the Poo Pro doesn't doo anything magic, feel like a stiff M really, just less power for sure

I have a 2011 M8 and will be snow checking a Proclimb M800

Obviously you are going to get some biased ^^^ comments. I have a Pro and love it. I won't bash the M8 and will just tell you that you should ride both of them. Get off of the trail as neither were made for that.

Talk to M8sandman and some of the others that have converted. They have quality time on both machines and can tell you what they miss from the M8 and like on the Pro.

I have a 2010 M8. I got to spend a full day on a Pro 155 this weekend. It didn't take any time for me to adjust from one sled to the other. Similar handling characteristics. The Pro doesn't push as bad on the hardpack or in technical tree riding. That could probably be corrected with a little more ski pressure on my M8, but I like the transfer where it is. The Pro is also easier to get unstuck. The light weight is noticeable.

The Pro gets up on the snow better and the M8 has noticeably more power all the way through. Those two pretty much cancel each other out. I think they could each out do each other in certain conditions. If the Pro had more power, I would consider switching for next year.

like stated above i have quite a few years on ac, my M was a highly modded 07. 50 pound weight loss and running right around 170 hp so it was no slouch. i ride 1500-2000 miles a year so i get some standing:) time. absolutely loved my M, always said they hadn't made a sled yet that i would sell it for. was in the position of either dumping another 2-3 grand into the M or buying a new one or changing brands. we are tree riders so huge hp is just really a waste, and thats what i was planning on adding to the 07 more hp. this was gonna cause me to run race fuel, causing me great pain since i ride so many miles each year. couldn't see paying 11k plus for the sled i already own so i started looking...

first i thought maybe i'd just buy a 10 m1000 and lighten it up, but once again i'd basically be buying the same sled with more weight and the same hp, just a lot more grunt;)

if ac would've come out with the proclimb this year i would be riding one right now but they waited soooooooooooooo long to change the chassis. a buddie had been looking at the pro, first thing that caught my ear was the weight, when poo first stated the weight i laughed, figured proto's were that light sure but when they hit production i could see a 20-30 pound gain. not to be, weight dead on to the pound of what they quoted. then the hp deal had me all worried, how could i be happy with a 145ish sled after running 170 and wanting even a little more than that? seemed silly.

luckily one of my best riding buds just happens to be a polaris dealer, we have the same aggresive riding style and both love the trees. so he wins a weekend riding last spring with chris and the new pros. he knows just what i like in a sled and likes the same "feel" as i do. well he just couldn't say enough about the new pro, called me from the trip and said this would be the sled for me. i have great respect for his opinion, but was not ready to stop bleeding green.

got to be sept. and was getting ready to pull the trigger on the M1000, had a deal all setup and was going to pick it up in about a week. my buddie calls and tells me he'll have the first of his new pros in a couple of weeks and he would sell me one at the buddie deal;) and gaurantee i would love it. so i figure it couldn't hurt to at least wait and see this "great" sled, was the best decision i ever made. had only seen vids of the sled and a few pics, when i walked into his shop and saw it the first thing i thought was WOW this thing is really narrow and short in the front!!! then i stood on it, i'm 5'10"
and it felt like home from the start. bars were dead on where i'd want them, perfect, then i went to yank it up on its side and almost pulled it over on the floor, man you really could tell the weight, could lift the rear end off the ground with one hand. then started looking at the way it was built. i'm a mechanic and aboslutely loved the way it was bolted together and the cast bulkhead was just unbelievealbe!!!! a-arms that can be changed without removing one piece of plastic, obviously someone had spent some serious time designing this sled. but could i live not riding an ac???

went home and thought about it, couldn't stop thinking about that 431 pounds, i'm 45 and have ridden my entire life and love to ride hard all day. that 40 pound lighter sled could keep me in my riding style a year or 2 longer, so thought what the heck i'll grab one. at the deal i was getting could easily resale it and maybe even make a little extra if i didn't like it. always had my M.

had already done 2 rides this season on my M, we usually get our first ride in at the end of october. so for the first ride on the pro there was just a small base but a good 2-3 feet of pow, not bad for a first ride. first thing i noticed was there was no drag going through the pow, came up to the first intersection and carved a circle to stop in and had no idea i was leaving a 3 foot trench, the thing floated so well you just didn't feel it:) felt so light, was unreal!!! thing would take right off and not trench, my buddie on his M1000 was having a heck of a time taking off. was nice to have a M right there on the first ride to compare. in fact my buddie with the M1000 didn't even ride the pro that day but saw how much better it got around and sold his ac and bought a pro!!! steering was soooo much better, felt like it took half as much strength to turn the bars. then the power, yeah baby smooth and linear and plenty of it. nothing lacking in that department, wasted way too much time thinking about that!!! thing carved sooo easy, i always say in the deep i just blink and head that direction;) the way the thing will keep carving sharper the more you turn it, you can head straight for a tree and then bang, pull a 90 degree turn so easily. know on my M towards the end of the day you'd get a little tired and sometimes when you had to cut hard you just wouldn't quite make it. with the pro you just know you'll make it, gives you the confidence that even if your whipped it will roll, just blink;) in fact you have to get used to how sharp the thing will carve, know sometimes the sled will carve sharper than i can!!! sweet...

in the trees this thing really shines, that cast bulkhead makes for one stiff chassis and makes going between treewells a dream. floats so well you'll be pulling lines you never thought about before. the thing climbs and climbs and climbs, stays on top of the pow and doesn't loose all its mo half way up, just keeps going. carves downhill just like up, have never rode any sled that will go downhill and pull a uturn and head right back so easily. i jump from side to side even less than on my M, the chassis and skid just work. less tired at the end of the day, PRICELESS!!!

i would compare the move like when i changed from my mountain cat to the M, a whole new generation of sled. the M was a GREAT SLED for its day, but its day has passed. could still ride one all day long and have a blast but would be knowing it would be even better if i was on my pro. after that first ride put the cat up for sale, new i would rather ride the pro in any condition. was a sad day when i loaded it up in the other guys trailer, will aways be a special place in my heart for that sled!!!

all i can say is ride a pro back to back with a cat, if your riding style is like mine the M will feel great but the pro will just be that much better.

This is the kind of unbiased review I like to read before putting my hard earned money down on a new sled. So thank you.

Also, there seems to be a common theme on this sled. I have been reading very positive things about the handling and power of the Polaris Pro RMK since they started giving demo rides last spring and not just from Polaris faithful. Seems many have decided to give Polaris a try after riding one or at least hearing about them. I can't wait to make my decision and put money down on a new ride this year.

that was perfect, that is exactly what i was looking to hear.I was worried about the sled having less HP but after reading the post not to concerned now...Also was worried about the motors but sounds like they are holding up really good...

One thing to consider about the Pro's power. It is much better in the midrange than the CFI4 (Dragon) motors were. So you can miss your line, lose top end and still pull really well. On my D8, if I lost the line and the power dropped below 8,000 RPM's I would lose my run at a steep hill and often have to turn out. The Pro's power curve is much more linear and allows you to keep climbing. This and the great transfer out of that rear skid along with the light weight make it a billy goat on the hill. You have narrowed your search down to two capable sleds.

Dont read into or get hung up on the posted HP# of the Pro. I just spent 3 days on one and couldnt believe how much of a kick *** sled this was. It was box stock and ripped, rode with M8's and XP 8's, all was pretty dam even. I've never owned a Polaris in my life so I'm not biased, Owned 6 Doo's 5 Cat's and 6 Yami's. Ride that Poo if you get a chance !

Been around a pro all year and I will admit the sled is damn impressive. It always leave less trench then my m8 and seems to really get up on the snow. Ive rode it a few times and it feels light and nimble, handles just like my cat I felt like. When I climbed back on my m8 it felt wide and bulky because of the way the plastics are shaped different on the 2 sleds. Have been on all different kinds of rides from thick tree and creek drainages to the big open hills and the polaris has definitely closed the gap on the m8 but I'm not sure they passed them. The weight difference if the m8 has a lighter can is only 15 lbs and the HP is only 10-15 difference so those 2 factors kind of cancel each other out.

How many people do you know with over 1000 trouble free miles on a PRO? The reason I ask is I only have 2 friends with Pros one has 2000 miles and the other 800. One lost a crank and the other is getting oil in the coolant and polaris can't figure out where it is coming from but said they have seen it a bunch. So there are some concerns with that motor still that would make me very leery. Even if it is on warranty, there is still potential for missing a month of riding which is a real pisser when you lay down 12k to have a sled for 4 months of winter.

Personally I think you are leaving out the best option available next year. The Pro-climb is going to be the sled to have. Take the Cat motor and put it in a more rider friendly chassis then the m8, similar to the Polaris and you have a deadly combination. If you are going to throw out that kind of money on a brand new sled you want to have the best technology so the 2011 m8 doesnt seem to be the best choice. The Pro is a great choice but the Pro-climb is going to be what you want. Nothing would be worse then buying that new polaris and seeing how impressive the new cat is and having to trade it in and take that double loss.

Snow check the pro-climb and don't look back!!! :D

I would check into troubles with the pro first There new yet and polaris has a pretty bad record with things going bad on the 800's. And i am hearing there are quite a few that the clutches are breaking off the crank shaft. The only reason i know that is my buddy's did this and when calling the dealer was told there is a issue with this happening. Beleive it or not.

Why would you consider an 11 M8, when you already have an 09 M8 and the 12 M8 is a new chassis? Unless the 11 is cheap, I'd hold off for the 12, or buy the Pol.

Please elaborate all the things that have gone wrong. I have seen two people with a broken clutch and it didn't harm the motor. Likely a bad batch of clutches. Ironic that so many AC guys want those clutches for their AC's. There has not been any significant problems with the 800 CFI2 motor. I've only heard of one burn down. I've also heard of three eTec burn downs (which is not significant) and several AC Diamond Drive issues. The IQ 800 (CFI4) did have more issues and that motor needs to have some add-ons to insure durability.

i was considering the 11 M8 because it had more power than the 09 m8 and felt the 09 needed more power and i enjoyed the m chassis,i can get it for $13,000 with 2yr warranty...

Now for the 012 Cat i and not to keen on buying a first year sled....

Now the Pro has a year under it's belt and it has surprised alot of ppl,i have checked around to see what kinda issue's they have had and doesn't look like alot.It doesn't have the same motors as the Dragon's which is a good thing.Plus i have heard guys having 2000-3000 miles on there sleds already and the sled never missed a beat....plus i can get a 012 snowchecked for 13,600-14,100 depends which dealer.

All I know is the kitty's could not go where the pro's were going last weekend and the cats had as good if not better riders on them!!!

The only two choices, imo, are 2012 cat or the pro. I really want to talk myself into one of the new cats but knowing how fun my wife's turboed pro is, I,m not going to take a chance without riding one first. I love my 09 tm8 but I made the fatal mistake of riding the pro. They are just the most fun and flickable sled I have ever ridden. One thing you don't hear about, that I like, is how easy the pro is to work on for a rider forward sled. Everyone says they are down on power but boost for boost my cat won't hang. The pro just feels snappier. I can't imagine the 2011 is any different than the two 2010's I rode. One turboed, one stock. Still would rather have the pro. Upgrading form an 09 m8 to an 11 m8 is going to be a big improvement but I think 2012 is where it's at.

i have come to the conclusion that i am gonna Snowcheck a 2012 Pro RMK.
Thanks alot everyone for the info and feedback it was great appreciated.I enjoyed that some of the guys that replied have and do ride the M8 and never said a bad thing the Pro RMK...:beer;:beer;:beer;:)

The 2011 M8(compared to the 09) has a lower gearing ratio, lighter crank, better seat(if that even matters to you) and higher compression head(therefor rated for more HP).
