2011/12 Snowy Range snow conditions

I know it was two weeks ago but here is pic from Saturday of Thanksgiving. This same sled was sidehilling and put a rock threw the belly pan and chunked outer sheave. But man was it fun with foot of fresh.

Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Front Range

Issued: 12/09/2011 5:42 AM by John Snook

Highlights

A weak storm system left up to 4" of new snow favoring the northern portions of the zone. Expect to find some fresh soft slab on east through south aspects. Variable December winds have left an interesting snowpack near and above treeline, layered with thin wind slabs. Deeper in the snowpack, persistent slabs have the potential to produce large triggered avalanches. Signs of instability have decreased, and the avalanche potential is not as obvious. That makes it easier to be lured out into steeper terrain, then rip out the surrounding slope when you find a weak spot and trigger one of the slabs.

Avalanche Danger

The avalanche danger for the Front Range zone is MODERATE (Level 2) on all aspects near and above treeline. Below treeline, the danger is LOW (Level 1).

Snow & Avalanche Discussion

The Front Range snowpack primarily consists of very hard wind slabs with weak layers in between. Observers note a somewhat deeper snowpack across the northern portions of the zone. December winds from a variety of directions have re-worked the snow into hard slabs near and above treeline. In the middle and lower portion of the snowpack there are some hard persistent slabs, resting on weak facets near the ground. These are getting more difficult to find, but are generally on northerly and easterly aspects. They are fairly hard to trigger at this point, but you definitely do not want to be around if one breaks away from the hillside.

A weak storm system brushed across the zone on Thursday leaving up to 4" of new snow favoring the northern portions of the zone. Wind directions varied from west to northwest at speeds efficient for moving snow. Expect to find some fresh soft wind slab on exposed slopes facing toward the east and southeast side of the compass. A skier in the Vail-Summit zone took a short ride on Thursday in 12-18" of wind blown snow which ran to the ground.

Avoid traveling on steep slopes with hard, round snow deposits. Remember you can trigger this type of avalanche from a shallow area and release an avalanche that breaks into much deeper snow. Below treeline, the snowpack is thin. Buried and obscured obstacles are the most hazardous aspect of the snowpack. Cool temperatures and a few clouds keep the avalanche danger steady for Friday

I talked to a group of guys last night that rode yesterday and they had a great time. Found over hood powder and only one bent A arm.:face-icon-small-sho

Saw the boys at the BT last night, said they had a good time. I'm getting tired of staring at the trailer, guess I'll hook up to it in the morn, run up and put some break in miles on.:face-icon-small-dis

WyColo Lodge

Due to current circumstances the Management has decided to close WyColo Lodge effective September 12th, 2011. We apologize for any inconvenience.

It is with a very sad heart I wright this, but all things must come to an end even if it's not how one would like. Thank You for the good times, Amanda

We were up there this weekend. Parked in Greenrock. Fewest amount of vehicles that I have ever seen in Greenrock on Friday. Low snow conditions getting to the backside. We did find some good snow in the trees and a few good hills to climb that nobody else had touched. There are still a lock of rocks out there. Be careful. We did end up with one broken A arm but other than that it was still a good trip out there.

Went out for a couple hours today for a breakin ride with the Redhead and Daisy. Sketchy on this side as has been mentioned before, carbides scuffing on 130 quite a bit. Went around back west of Queally, decent snow but a hard powder turn will show grass. Came back down the waterfall, looks like we're the first down, a boatload of rocks; whoever follows our tracks are NOT gonna be happy. We were extremely cautious, nothing bent! Ya'll need to work on your snowdancin':D

I rode with my brother in law and dad on Saturday. We found some decent snow to track up on some FS roads but nothing "great". We put about 50 miles on without any damage to any of the sleds, so I guess that is a successful trip. I won't go up again until they either get some more snow, or to put some road miles in on my new sled. As Dan already pointed out - do your snow dancing...

Here is one picture - I messed around with the helmet camera again, if I have some time later today I will put up a short video if the footage is decent.

Snotel sites don't matter! Cuz there is 0 new snow :face-icon-small-win

It sucks especially thinking about last year, we were five feet deeper in most spots by this time

A few of my friends went up Saturday, they said the snow is packing up and will make a good base when we get more. One guy took out an A-arm on his pro at the lake Marie hill.
