Yeah - the entire state had a great year. Epic.

Those pics were mid-season.

It basically snowed for 5 most straight.
Only a day or two per week without real storms.

You could ride from your door if you stayed in the cabins at the Taylor Park Trading Post. Taylor Park Trading Post Cabins are about 30miles up Taylor Canyon from Almont.

Taylor is a nice riding area, lots of great stuff in every direction - Cottonwood, Aspen, Hancock Pass, etc... While it gets great snow, it doesn't really compare to Irwin for deep fresh. But it's definitely worth riding.

You might be able to park at Cottonwood trailhead and ride over w/ supplies if you wanted. Not sure how long you can park at the Cottonwood trailhead though. And if you drop at the BuenaVista side, that kind of eliminates riding over at Irwin, or Black Mesa.

Even without ride-in/ride-out front door access, I think Almont Resort or 3Rivers Resort in Almont would be the better option to consider if the group decides to come this way.

quick questions.....

how many people showed up to the Irwin Ride?

how many people showed up to the SLO Ride?

CB Ride probably had 50+, but I don't know exactly.
We filled the parking lot and then some, and had 6-8 tables filled for the dinner.

SLO probably had more being closer to Denver/Rabbit Ears.

I don't really know. But I was told several times by many different folks that the SLO ride brought in way more peeps. I know I had 15 peeps just in my group for two days and there were a bunch of groups. A lot of day trippers showed up too. There wasn't a cabin that was empty that weekend. Every one was filled up with SnoWesters.

Mule can prolly tell you how many people showed up for the Irwin ride but judging from the pictures it was pretty small compared to SLO.

Personally, I would like to ride Irwin. It's different and that is good.

The ride at Irwin didn't have a huge number, I think we had about 45 or so for the dinner. Reason less than at SLO? I think multiple...

People didn't want to drive that far (what's an extra hour to ride for a weekend? Less difference if I70 is bad, there isn't traffic down to Irwin...)

Avalanche danger. Make no mistake, it was there the year we went down there! Only know of two people triggering, one was a minor that slid a few feet, the other I'm pretty sure the guys from Grand Junction (sorry, don't remember your names) knew it wasn't a good place to be, but had to get through there or circle back...

Lack of camping. We thought Ohio Creek would have a parking lot open that winter to camp in and the county commisioners didn't agree to that...

The raffle. Last year you guys did an unreal job of raising donations for the raffle!!! We had a good raffle in Gunnison, but nothing like at SLO...

I'll take some of the blame too, guess I didn't do a good enough job organizing it.

I think those that went had a great time, there is an amazing variety of riding, everything from deep and steep, to deep and trees, to deep and open meadows...but notice the deep part of all. :D

It was not my intention to disrupt the 4M in Gunni at all. I could'nt make the trip down there so I decided to go to R.E. instead. It was dumb on my part but I posted this http://snowest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61092 not intending to take away from the 4m ride. People just followed for the same rasons I did. I am also quit sure a bunch of those folks donated. This later became dub'd "The misfits ride". The turnout ended up quit large. If the two rides would have been combined there would have been over 100 riders or more.

Drive distance played a huge part in that. Most people on here like to ride areas they are familiar with and feel safe with. For most, R.E. and Buff provide that in addition to camping or ride from the cabin door(SLO).

The very first SW ride, the one in Island Park, was a huge success. They had folks from all over the mid west and Canada drive to that ride.... why? IMO the organizers didn't have a debate as to what they were going to do. The first thing they did was to find the most popular SW riders and get them on board. Everyone wanted to ride with Slim, Beels..... the sheep followed.

Nobody ever wanted to ride with me, that’s why all my rides were so unsuccessful hence the "Misfits" tag. lol

Not everyone is going to be happy on the spot you pick but many things
should be taken into consideration before a choice is made. Drive distance
is huge part even though you may only be talking 1 hr or more.

I appologize, wasn't my intention to call you out, just poking a little fun...post edited.

First line says it all. That year too, gas wasn't exactly low in price...

Maybe Colorado SW'ers should establish two annual rides:

(1) Rabbit Ears/Buff Pass/Vail Pass - for those close to Denver, who only ride Rabbit Ears & Buff Pass, or can't get out of town an extra hour each way.

(2) Rotating Location - some alternate location such as SLO, Grand Mesa, Lake City, Buena Vista, Irwin, Ouray, etc.. for those who can drive for a holiday weekend.

There isn't a bad riding area in the state as far as I'm concerned!
As long as we hold the rides on two different weekends, they would not compete for participants.

It did seem a bit difficult to get the kinds of numbers that the front range rides get when there was a competing event occurring at the same time. While there probably exists valid reasons to get folks together, it kind of undermines the efforts of people who organize a specific event.

Lastly, I don't think this is necessarily a popularity contest based on fancy riders, rather I think the success of the event comes down to how well it can be organized and what resources are available to make it happen.

One thing we should do this year is focus some part of the event on supporting the efforts against the 'Hidden Gems Wilderness" campaign.

Where ever it happens this year, I'm sure it'll be a fun ride!

$00.02 spent!

Overnight they threaten to tow. But with cooperation and communication something might be able to worked out. But Almont is only a couple of hours away from BV. So having your rigs handy to ride (As Doo Mentioned) Irwin, Black Canyon, and Taylor may be an advantage.

The pictures that the Grand Junction crew post from Grande Mesa never disappoint!
I think there is a snowmobile-friendly lodge or two up there if I recall.
