2009-2011 Diamond Drive Bearing Failure

I have a Diamond Lite Drive that I was messing with today and if you go back a page or two we were concerned that the transfer gear was not seating fully after the wide bearing was installed. This is also the case with my Diamond Lite drive so all I can do is assume that this is "OK"? I have three seasons on this case in a 1200cc sled and the planetary gears and the BDX gears show no abnormal wear.

I guarantee you that this is happening to everyone installing the wide bearing you just can't see it with the stock gears but it can be seen with the BDX gears because of the holes. Again it must "not" be a problem?? This has nothing to do with the drive shaft because the bearing on the transfer gear sits on a machined surface in the ring gear...I think its called the ring gear?

If I'm way off base on this let me know and I will delete this post. I don't want to add to the confusion but this has been my only concern with the bearing change.

These pics are of my Diamond Lite drive.

This pic is of a BDX gear with the 2010 bearing and spacer installed.

This pic is of a BDX gear with the wide bearing installed...If you look close you can see the transfer gear sits a tad higher in the planetary.

Talked with my dealer today and has not heard or seen any bearing failures on any 09's that have darkened his shops doors...some with 2000 plus miles. He wonders if there is a "group" of sleds that came from factory with weak bearings and does not see the need to change to the heavier bearing. Diamond drive flush and new oil every season is good enough for me and him by the sounds of it. He also said that if the thing flew apart that there is no reason why any dealer wouldnt warrenty it. I say Ride the SOB! :D

What happens when it flies apart after the warranty is up? I think for 15 bucks and a 1/2 hour of my time I will just change the bearing. If I didn't change it I would be constantly wondering if it is gonna blow!

Talks cheap. Get him to promise to go out to the mountains and bring it back for ya WHEN it goes. I don't get this denial mentality goin around the last few years, a problem spot comes up with whichever new sled design and somebody always has gotta say, "well it was just a select few" or "yeah its an issue but not with the serial # I bought" etc. Sorry fellas, defective design issues happen, even to the one YOU bought. And gee, a dealer who hasn't seen problems, haven't heard that one yet. Tell that to the 07 Rev 800 guys or the 08 Dragon 800's or the 09 Cat diamond drive guys, etc etc.
Do yourself a favor, upgrade the bearing to a heavier one, save you and your buddies a screwed up day.

Im just saying that im gonna ride mine the way it is and ill let you guys all know what the outcome is...may or may not eat some crow over it..time will tell. 1M800 gutting the diamond drive and replacing the bearing takes 1/2 hour? News to me. I got 2 buddies with identical sleds to mine with 2500 miles each...wonder why there bearings havent flown apart yet? Also for example most of the sled recalls i have come to me over the years state the serial # range that is effected...That tells me that select few sleds have isssues and others are fine. Just sharing my point of view guys is all.

If you read this whole thread you will see that you don't have to gut the diamond drive. Pull the cover, pull out the gear and change the bearing. Not that tough. I have taken DD's apart before. They are not rocket science...actually fairly simple. With the right tools and some mechanical skill it should not take very long to change it. Even if it takes me an hour it will be better than driving 20 hours to Wyoming in Feb. to have the bearing take a crap the first day and then have to rent a sled the rest of the trip.

Not saying you have to change yours! I don't really care what you do with your sled. I'm just saying it is worth my time and money to change mine!

Really didnt realize that the fix was that simple 1M800...Ive Had chain cases apart in the past and just assumed that the DD was more complex. Just gotta find a heated shop to install the bearing so i dont freeze my balls off in the Sask Cold:D

Do you guys have to call BDX to get some service? I have tried to PM him on the forum with no response. I emailed them on their website and no response. I don't see the bearing listed on the website so I guess I have to call. All I want to do is order the new bearing!

So is this an issue on my 2009 crossfire 8? it has engine reverse. brand new no miles.

Yes mine is a 09 Xf8 look at my write up
