Anybody had this happen? There is about 1/2 inch of play before the skis turn. Looks like the motor has to come out to fix it. Any ideas or is this normal?

Crappy steering post material. It eventually has slack in it. The only way to really fix it is to replace the steering post with a better post. You have to remove the motor bolts as the post connects under the motor.

Bug.... can you clarify "crappy steering post material"

Lots of rod ends to wear out, idler bearings, steering post bushings, ball joints etc....

the steering post is removable with out doing anything with the motor mounts, just remove the tank and you can do it all with a 9/16 crows foot and a ratchet with a good extension. the four main bushing wear out pretty quick, and if you bend any of the linkage by hitting a stump/rock whatever it may be it will feel like that as well

The loose feeling could be coming from a loose rod end on the drag link which is attached to the bottom of the steering post.I have seen this on several sleds.Just tighten the rod end and all the steering play will be back to normal

Yep, I've gone through three steering posts in my D7 and D8 (between the two). The reason I say the steering posts are "crappy" is because they twisted off at the top of the collar for me. It seems the material just kept getting worked back and forth and then came off like a carmel chewy.

Loose bolts on the steering linkages, mainly the one at the bottom of the post. Only way I was able to tighten mine was when I pulled the engine. The '07's were kinda overlooked on this, my '08 was tighter even after 7k miles.

Thanks for the Tips. I have had a couple a-arm bending hits. Looks like I will have to pull the motor to see whats going on. Rather fix it now than have something happen 30 miles from the truck. Sent rep to all those not already maxed out. Thanks

We ran into a weird situation that had similar symptoms. It turned out to be a bushing melted away from a short on the hand heaters. Apparantly Carl's had seem this before. I had some open wires rubbing the handle bars. First some strange things like the dash and headlight would intermittantly quit. Sled still ran fine. Finally after changing a ton of stuff we isolated the short to the grip heater but it was too late as it shorted and burned up the bushing clear down by the motor. Amazing! Yes the motor has to come up or out to work on it.

I hate to disagree, but as Kinser posted you can remove the fuel tank and replace the steering post and bushings without removing the engine.

Well I got lucky. I was taking off the carbs to remove the motor and I saw the nut was loose for the rod at the base of the stem. I tightened that up as well as the inner tie rods and the thing is like new again. Thanks all for the tips
