09 M1000 twisted off PTO side of crankshaft

Riding for about 30 minutes on some great IDAHO powder and then bang !

Primary all nicked up by bouncing off of Secondary ... belt is unscathed.

Crank snapped off right at the end of the thread hole for the bolt holding on the primary shaft

Engine runs great today even though the crank is snapped off flush with the case.

Sled has less than 1000 miles.

Where is a good shop for repair .... no shops near me?

How much should I rebuild?

Should I have the shop do the bottom end? Also top end?

How much does the shop need?

I've done top ends but never split crank cases since I am concerned about specs on runout.

I say you should give it a shot if you have all the tools and have mechanical skill. Maybe its just me but I hate letting any shop touch my sled, bike whatever, not just cause it'll take forever, and it'll cost WAY more, but you'll know you're being ripped off one way or another. My personal experience with engine work being done by dealers is once everything is all said and done you could of got a complete new crate engine for the same price as getting yours fixed... Speaking from personal experience. If you want a dealer to work on your engine you might as well start looking into crate engines. If you know you dont have the time or just cant do it then dont, but if you believe you can then do the rebuild. Also once youre already in there put new pistons in.

Its hard to give discounts or cut deals on labour, most dealers just wont do it... Key word MOST...

That sucks, I know of a few that have done that.
Pull the motor send out the crank for rebuild,

Tar

Buddy of mine just replaced the crank in his M1000. I believe it was around $600 for the rebuilt crank, exchange, and then with the other odds and ends he was in it around $800.

Pretty straight forward job to replace it on your own, you will need a couple tools like a puller for the flywheel, maybe a tool to press the wrist pins out of the pistons, and an extra set of hands. Doing a full top to bottom rebuild is much easier with two guys.

So considering your internals are good, I would send the crank in for exchange and get a new one.

(We send ours in through Buds Saw Service in Cottonwood Idaho) Might give them a call 208-962-3211.

Or maybe your are just ready for a slight upgrade, I could deliver a 09 M1000 with a twisted race gas turbo to McCall for you. Make me an offer. :)

I hate to beat a dead horse but, what gear ratio are you running? That, or, what shape are your motor mounts in?

Gear ratio is stock.

Sled has less than 1000 miles and have not checked mounts this year.

A burned belt can cause this. One with a "flat spot" so to speak. Seen it happen a few times before on various different makes and models. Each time the burned spot comes around the clutch closes and then has to open back up, do this several thousand times a minute and you have a pretty wicked vibration. Dunno if this is the case for you, but thought id throw it out there.

I had the same thing happen on my M1000

taking the engine out was quick about 1 hr? ( over a year ago)

You can save the clutch. Undo the bolt and then Teflon tape a bolt in the broken crank stub.

pour water in the hole and put clutch side bolt back in. crank on both sides against each other. it will pop the stub loose and the clutch can be reused.

I bought a motor with bad cylinders and swapped the cranks over. Quick job very satisfying to have done. Been about 1000 miles with no problems.

Make sure you get a manual to cover the orientation of the rings on the crank. The splits need to be in opposite orientation. rings on each side of the oil drive or water pump gear. ( sorry can't remember)

after I replaced the crank I zorched my cylinders and pistons because I didn't get the piston cir clips in correctly.

extra time and money for new pistons and cylinder repair. :face-icon-small-fro

still have a motor less head for sale with 500 miles on new cat crank and pistons...if you didn't part the sled.
