09 dragon questions

Hello,

I am trying to help a buddy out with his 09 dragon, being a cat guy I am not too savvy on the dragons so hopefully somebody can help me. Here is the problem his dragon ran great it's first year he had the recall done at the first of the last season and it hasn't ran right since. He was getting check engine lights for the pipe sensor and something else, replaced pipe sensor and that went away it ran ok but always about 200 rpm low since the update. At the end of that season he would get a low end bog and pop once and awhile. His dealer told him his reeds were bad and sold him a set. I am getting ready to replace them for him and it looks like a PITA so my question is does the 800 liberty motor have reed issues? What is standard compression on this motor , he has 110 psi per cylinder. Is there another avenue we should be exploring?
Sled has slp single pipe, y pipe and running an mbrp can. I greatly appreciate your help

Sorry i am crunched for time right now so I can't go indepth but here's a few things to consider that maybe others can expand on. Thats quite a dealer if he figured a bad reed by sound or looking at it. I haven't heard a lot of reed issues on non-turbo sleds, but it sure can happen. Look at the trottle body boots while your in there as well.

1. Remove the seat & tank for the reed change. Once airbox is out its not so bad. Handle injectors/rail with care. If you have access to a scope, I would pull the TB's and look into the reed cages to see if you can see any chipping, cracks, or breaks.
2. Consider having TPS calibrated while they are out.
3. Check oil pump linkage arm setting while TB's are out.
4. Add additional grounding wires from ECU plate to chassis and ECU plate to motor mounts.
5. Depending on miles, I would change fuel filter at anything over 1000 miles of use.
6. Read up on sealing the air box/plenum.
7. Find out from dealer which update flash he used on the ECU. Guru's on here can tell you which one is best for a non-turbo, may need to be re-flashed.

All the above info can be found in detail with pics in the "Increasing Your IQ" sticky thread at the top. Best thing he can do for himself is read it all then find an IQ knowledgeble guy or you in his area to help with the upgrades. It sounds like a lot but it really isn't once you understand it all and get started.

Post up what you find and many on here will keep up with ya. Good thing he has you to help out.

You can get into the sled pretty good with seat/tank out

This is the TB boot (pic shows a brace for turbo apps) check it for cracks and delamination

if the pipe is cold you will have a bog, so if you just start it up and go after sitting for a bit this will happen. just want to make sure you are not chasing that because it will get expensive and not change a thing

Exactly what rmkboxer said, if this is happening after sled is shut off for even a minute or two its probably the cold pipe. My dragon did it bad until the pipe is good and warmed up, it would stumble, cut out and bog right off an idle until the pipe was good and hot. It was after installing the slp pipe that this started. I was running a pcv so fuel delivery was pretty much spot on, the sled ran awsome except when the pipe was cold.

It well also need a PCV to correct the efi jetting which is also mentioned in the increasing your iq thread

i would try a different ecu flash. mine backfired early last winter with what ever flash they loaded then. went back to the jan. 09 flash. i tried just about all of them and that worked the best on my sled. others had different results.

Cool guys I really appreciate all of the response especially erics pics. So far I have the tank and air box out of the way, my question is do I need to remove the injectors to get the reeds out or should they come out after I get the throttle body's out of they way?

Got the reeds out and found half of the outside petals with tips starting to deteriorate. Will post pics soon

Are they stock reeds or V-Force reeds? Is this a turbo sled by chance?

Also, check the throttle body boot closely. If it has 1,500 miles on it, I would just replace it to.

Thanks dave! I will for sure check the intake boot. Stock reeds, natrualy aspirated

if there breaking with stock engines I can't wait to see what happens on my turbo

not too bad on a turbo, one set a year but you can also buy only the petals from different guys on this site. That's what im trying forthis year. It should be cheaper than the polaris reeds that come with the cage and everything!

petals are 85$-100$ btw

almost forgot...for the problem itself lol: nobody noticed that he mentionned the update was done???

It is normal that after the update his sled was pulling 200rpm less, polaris went with a lower compression head and different flash that has been known to be a lot less powerful but a little bit more reliable. Taht could explain the rpm issue for sure andmaybe he will need to put some lighter weights in the primary...and like others said, the flash with a single pipe before the update and after must add more fuel at wot because he sled makes more power. If that's the case, after the update it would potentially be too rich at wot which could also cause loss of power.

When reeds start to chipped, you can mostly feel it on the low end more than top end. Mind you it's a really good thing you did check lol!

Im no expert but that's what I could think of.

Back together and fired up! Did backfire once:face-icon-small-fro but seems normal. I am recommending to my friend that he gets a different flash in his ECM and picks up a pcv. Thanks again to all that contributed
