09 800 goes down

still dont think they make as much power not sure how much hp loss from the head and not sure of how much hp can be gained with timeing to compensate. better yet somebody dyno before the update then dyno with just the head then dyno with head/tune "complete update" solve the mystery of the hp

the head may add hp..just because it lost a few compression points doesnt mean it doesnt make hp..its all in how the motor (cylinders, ports, head, piston domes) flow and burn the mixture..since you dont own one..why do you care?..how about going over to the yammy section and complain about how big a dog a 4 stroker is without 25000 in parts(turbo, suspension, motor parts, tracks...) who really cares..those of us who can help are helping those with problems..and sooner or later they will get fixed one way or another....

i could see it maybe adding hp in low elavations maybe just maybe it mite due to deto but polaris designed it to run on pump gas to begine with and high altitude its definitly looseing hp. i agree its all in how the(cylinders, ports, head, piston domes) are a combination to produce hp there slaping these heads, pistons on the same ports/cylinders ect not initialy designed for the cylinders/ports.

I've spent alot of time over the years searching out the little things that make things"run"..until you really spend the time to test it..you wont know...but do us all a favor..the guys who's sleds arnt running right..dont need someone on here bashing there sled everytime they post..come up with some useful info that can help them or tell them you feel for them...but dont keep bashing their sleds..its a no win for everyone...everyone of these sleds can be made to rip..with stock factory parts..its mainly a matter of figuring out which items on which guys sled is causing the problems for them..and then fixing it...:beer;

I really like my Assault. I have it set up exactly the way I want it. Last year it had a few issues but I found what worked and what didn't and had a great season on it. Put 2010 update on it last month and have major issues with it now. I have alot of SLP stuff on it...air/vents... as well as single pipe/can. Took SLP off and put it back to stock as well as clutching. Still will not run properly. I like this sled and I personally don't think I can replace it with any other sled. My sons have M8's(2010 SnoPro and 09 HCR) so I have plenty of seat time on them. Buddy has a Doo that I rode and 2 seasons ago I had a Nytro MTX. All of these sled run strong and have their good and bad points like anything. I just like MY sled. That being said, I want to fix my Assault. Is the PCV the answer? The Boondocker controller wasn't. A spare ECU I had from last year with the same flash prior to the 2010 update didn't do the job either. Sorry for going on here, but after reading some of Dart's rants, he's sort of right. On the other hand, you have to maintain a possitive attitude and work through issues IF they are personally worth the effort. IMO the Assault is. Or for other peeps on here the D8. If the PCV will fix the problem, there's no problem....it's that simple.

i bought an 09 d8 at the end of last yr.put about 300 miles on it with the most recent update.other than the midrange bobble ran pretty good.got the 2010 update this year and was very dissapointed.midrange bog, hard starting, tip in hesitation, deto light and random backfires.after taking it to a shop with a service department i trust(not my usual shop)i was told that other then some basic setup problems(tps, oil pump, throttle cable etc)sled was good to go.the shop told me that it would still run like crap until polaris came out with there new flash sometime in january.then i decided to try to fix this problem myself.scouring the forums for helpful, thoughtful posts regarding my problems and disregarding the silly, useless rants(440 dart)i found the pcv and heard about peoples good luck.called dynotech jim, bought one, insatalled it...sled runs PERFECT!!!added the slp pipe setup and a carls clutch kit, could not be happier.jim sent me the 162 hp slp map took about 2 seconds to load onto my pcv...sled is awesome!!!we all spend a ton of money for this sport whether it be for sleds, mods, clothes,or fuel for our trucks.if i can spend $369 for a pcv deliverd to my door, well its my money and thats what i'll do.should we HAVE to do it...no.sit around wait for the new map and hope that fixes it.or for the price of ur gore tex coat...fix ur sled once and for all.these forums are designed for useful, helpful posts for fellow snowmachiners to look for help/advice on anything from clutching to the best burger joint to stop at on the way to the hill.they arent for people looking to argue about nothing on a topic they shouldent even care about...please do what you said a few post ago... and stop posting.

what do you mean there still blowing up with the updates check out the thread "any d8s failing with updates here are SOME post by others on here
not bashing trying to make you guys relise that this is not alright and cant say good things and persuade you to beleive that these are bad sleds. yes you guys already bought the sled so yes you have to deal with the engines blowing up left and right being under powered ect. HELP SAVE THE NEXT GUY FROM DEALING WITH THIS MESS. 3/4 of the people that own sleds probley dont even know what snowest is so when there haveing a ton of problems where they supose to go oh well they can go to the dealer the deal tells them the problems are fixed all you need to do is the updates and your good to go it blows up again whos fault is it now polaris or the dealer POLARIS

2 at my dealer blown up. One is a 2008 with 5 miles on it, and the other is an 09 with 15 miles on it. both had the update.... Go Polaris!!!!

had the 2010 updated parts and flashes put on my 08 dragon 800 a few months ago it blew up this morning. I made it about 125 miles on the new parts. this will make the 6th top end in a year and I have also had a complete new block due to a retarded mechanic. In my opinion we should file a class action lawsuit against polaris. as soon as I have the extra money and my dragon is fixed again I'm trading in for an m8 sno pro

6 times??? ... you seriously have WAY more patience than I do!!! Hats off to you for staying so determined!!!

I know of 1 failure with update.

Mine failed but it was a pre-existing problem that caused it to fail. Only took 6 tries for them to get it right

Just to let all you polaris people out there know there should be a new flash and fuel mapping to be coming out in the next week or so. They say this will cure the problems but we will have to wait and see all we can do is hope for the best. I think I will wait for the update and if that doesnt cure it then go with the tuner..

What is this number 5 or 6 now. Call me skeptical. Polaris just keeps crying wolf. Save the headache and get a PC V.

Gentlemen, as you can tell by my vast amount of posts that I have little to say or other things to do, but there is another side to the Polaris Dragon 800's. I will start with my sons 07/700 Dragon, it has had issues, hand warmers, engine top end, t-stat, etc. All under warranty, no real concerns but not bullet proof, now has 2800 miles. My 08/800 163 Dragon has 4200 + miles (I get out more than my son) with no issues other than hy-fax, second set of hy-fax was from SLP and were installed at 400 miles, still in good shape. I change the belt every 1200 miles just cause. The only upgrades are air horn, single SLP pipe/can and SLP blue/pink clutch spring. My 09/800 155 Dragon has only 920 miles, same upgrades, 0 issues, no bog on either, and I do ride them hard. The 08 has had the update done, (figured it could use a new top end) only 80 miles on it since, it pulls hard up to 6500 feet, but it does not have the pull it had at 7500 + feet and I lost 200 RPM, had to drop clutch weights by 2 grams. The 09 is scheduled for the update when the next order of kits arrive, hope it takes awhile as I am not in any hurry to change it, that sled flat out rips!!

After reading all the posts I would like to say something about yamaha's and the supposed superior build quality, anybody have an Exciter from the late 80's? a 90's 600 twin with junk pistons and cylinders, does the name SRX mean anything? Quality? Hmmmm.

does a fuel controller void warranty ?

I suppose if a dealer or Polaris knew that you had a fuel controller on your sled and you lost your motor, they could deny warranty coverage. But...it is easy to take off. It doesn't make a "footprint" as all it does is change the amount of fuel that is sent by the ECM.

A fuel controller does the same thing as re-jetting a carb. It's just more complicated as it involves electronic control. If you re-jet your carbed sled, would it void the warranty?

Very good point I couldn't have said it better.

IMO a good dealer will be glad and look the other way at a pcv install, and dart please get a subscription to dyno teck he tests all the stuff he can and in the poo 800 a lower compression head adds hp sure it loses at altitude but it's still higher that the other stock head some have had multiple problems we have 50 800's with the worst being a stumble at low end , every kit we put in the pistons we took out were perfect, and sure we did lose a few ecu's and regulators but I would blame a vendor not poo for now on that issue.

My dealer said he would help me out price wise with slp fuel controller, and will warranty. Have not decided weather to go with slp or dynotech. Seems to be alot of guys running the dynotech with great results. Anyone running slp?

As far as warranty. Work for a cat dealer, by law warranty can not be voided. Can be denied if they can prove that aftermarket part caused problem.

when I rode the other day, I unplugged the ethanol connection, but still had 91 octane with no ethanol. Dealer was not sure if it retarded timing or if made it run richer. It did seem to run little richer, would load up going down trail, but did not seem to change top end. Just thought would put that in maybe a bandaid till polaris comes out with new mapping.

For those not sure who to buy their PCV from, I would recommend Jim at DynoTechResearch. First of all, he is a good guy. But I say this because of the time he has spent testing and researching the Polaris burn down issue. You have to read his testing doc on the 800. He has some good information on the lower injectors being lean and power valve springs contributing to the problems. His time spent testing and researching a fix is worth my money. SLP is great too, but I give JIm the nod.

440 dart I agree with you about polaris should build an 800 that everyone with no mechanical knowledge can ride. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. I can not change POLARIS, so I own a ten thosand dollar sled that I can fix with EGTS and a fuel box, that I have control over. I am happy with both of my 800s and choose to surround myself with positive people and events. If I disliked my sleds I would buy probably an 800 Artic Cat or ski-doo. Life is a choice, to complain about ones poor choice and not making a choice to correct is a waste of precious time in your life. Remember it is what you learn after you know it all that counts. Try the positive side of life the rewards are great.

Dragonfire, Hey nice post you are so correct life is too short and the glass should always be half full and not half empty. Seriously though the D8 has had some problems but with a $400 in upgrades for a pc5 you just cant go wrong with this sled.

You guys that think that the PCV is the answer to all of the 800 problems, you guys are fooling yourselves. They are getting notorious for blowing voltage regulators and ECUs. Mine has blown 2 of them over 2,000 miles. It's been down for a month already this season and no clue when I will get it back. Thankfully I have a backup sled.
