08 Tundra 5.7 ????

Well the $4.16 a gallon diesel prices finally did me in. Went in and traded the cummings in on a Tundra. It certianly is the nicest interior and riding truck I have ever owned. But I can't help but think I am going to miss the grunt of cummings.

My question is who is pulling with this truck? How does it handle a 4 place enclosed?

There's a guy around here who does some lanscaping work, I see him pull a trailor with a Bobcat all his equipment on it was an 08 Tundra. Not sure how that compares to a 4 place enclosed though. I definately agree that it's a very nice truck, and has an awesome interior.

Did you do the math first? There sure seem to be a lot of guys jumping ship. I know I have had both a truck with a hemi and several with the cummins. The cummins trucks get 20% better milage empty, 30% better towing and obviously have way more power. My numbers end up being a wash, and I have no desire to drive a Toyota, first choice of the tree hugger crowd after Subaru;)

Read the May 2008 issue of Peterson's 4 Wheel & Offroad magazine. Page 60. I personally have a 2008 Duramax and I just purchased my first Toyota. I have gotten as low as 5 mpg with my diesel. I am very impressed with my Toyota so far.

$4.35 where I'm at. Almost .80 difference between diesel and regular. Anyways I'm looking at the tundra also. I know a guy who tows a huge jet boat with one, does great. I'm not sure what the torque rating on the 5.7 is but at 380hp its as much as my cummins has. I'm sure it'll do great. I talked to a toyota mechanic and he said the motor is built to rev so don't be afraid to lock it into a lower gear and run some r's when pulling. just my .02

torque is 401 ft.lbs.

never seen a tree hugger in a new Tundra around these parts and there a getting to be a lot of Tundras

Love my Tundra

Yea did the math. Averaged 13MPG with the cummins so I am not sure where your math figures are coming from but you might need a new calculator? On the low end with the Tundra I will be getting 13 so then you figure 3.15 for gas virsus 4.16 for diesel then the math would say gas is the way to go. As for your hemi comment, this is not a hemi! I had one of those too, that was why I went with the cummins. This 5.7 has more hp and torque than the hemi. and not even going to justify the tree hugger comment. Please get real, I am glad you chose to drive what you drive, it is your choice.

I am simply looking for input from actual owners of the Tundra on how it pulls, wasn't really looking for attempted bashing from die hard cummins owners...

13 with a Cummins? Must have been the new 6.7, my '06 Megacab 4x4 was getting 20 overall, my 450hp/850lbft '06 Quad Long box 4x4 gets 18 average, my calculator works fine:)

How is the tundra gonna pull? Nowhere near as well as a TD at altitude, but good luck with it anyway.

Rode in a new 5.7 crew max earlier this season. 4 guys had ridiculous room in the cab. There is more room in the back seat than in the front, made the couple hour drive very comfortable. Truck was pulling a 4 place enclosed with 4 sleds, i wasnt driving but from listening to the motor and shifting it pulled it like it wasnt there. Watched the mileage and looked to be around 12-13 mpg while pulling, around 16 mpg on the overall mpg and the guy drives it hard. Truck was quiet and extremely smooth. The other two guys along for the ride (who both drive CTD's)were very impressed.

Mmm...love my 4Runner and trees as a matter of fact, keeps my neck from becoming to red!;)

My buddy bought a Tundra and has found it to be an excellent puller, for a gas truck. Obviously different than a diesel with how it pulss.

8,000 miles on tundra this year

4 door tundra This truck was new we drove it from minnesota to vail colorado
the second day it was brought! well lets say this truck has mpg ave. on speedo it says 10 miles per gallon the hole time on freeway with 2 place trailer
and 2 sleds. that was in jan. Now just got back sat. from wy. bearlodge
the truck said 10 miles ave to on this trip when you fill it up its says 300 miles till empty but it will not get that towing sleds. aver. fill was any where from 45.00 dollars to 55.00 never let it get to empty on the road!
As far as the truck go nice ride driving it is easy. the dealer told me not to use tow haul unless towing over 10,000 pounds! SAve on gas mileage I have never used tow haul button yet on towing the two place.
The tranny seams to hold on sometimes after long haul stop then go. like it wont shift had this happen 3 times I just get off gas then back on seams to remember that it needs to shift then. taking it in to dealer next week to see whats the problem the last time it happened it held the rpm would not shift.
We will see what the deal is. good to have warr.
just hope its not because i dont use tow/haul button.

proper punctuation would really make this easier to read

i think the new tundras are dope, my old man dam near bought one, but went for the taco instead.

How many of you are quoting mileage numbers by believing the trip computer? Those things are rarely accurate.

The one in my '05 RAM 3500 claims about 4 mpg better than I actually get (hand calculated). BUT, what I DO get is 14 around town and 18-19 on the highway. This is a 3500 dually 6-speed 4x4 quad cab.

Heck, last weekend... I drove back to San Jose from Reno... had my M6 in the back of the truck, and was towing my little Honda Prelude on a U-Haul tow dolly. I had the cruise set at 62 mph the whole way, and I got 18.5 mpg hand-calculated!!

When I brought my fifth wheel toyhauler down here (to live in while I'm on contract), coming up and over Donner Summit, all the way to San Jose, again, 62 mph, with the trailer weighing 15,000 lbs, I got right at 10 mpg. Without the mountain driving it would have been around 12.

Best if luck to you Tundra defectors... I think you'll find you won't be getting the mileage of the Cummins, especially when towing.

Don't forget proper sentence structure and correct spelling.:D

Mileage on my Tundra was no better than 10 while towing anything. My Cummins is 11-13 towing 12-15,000 lbs. The new Tundra is nice, but marketing is just that, hype. If you like it after you drive it, buy it. You'll likely be happy. It is completely a 1/2 ton. Don't think you can replace a Cummins HD with a tundra for towing. No comparison. The MegaCab has the most room of any pickup, but the Tundra is a good second. I would definitely take a new Tundra over any American gasser.

Good Luck

I bought the Tundra over a Chev because it had the 6 speed. Hauled a 6000lb travel trailer to Alaska last summer & was very disappointed with the power & the lack of economy. The engine has the power but the gear splits are ridiculous (car like) with 3rd gear capable of running over 80MPH & you still have 4th gear & 2 overdrives. NO way it will pull 6th with a load & 5th is marginal at times. I tried every cofig from tow haul to select mode & never got over 10 with an average of 7.2 for the 6000 mile round trip. Thinking there was something wrong the dealer gave me a demo & had Toyota factory guys come out to run it through the mill. Nothing wrong with it and the demo was very comparable to my truck. Other than towing it's a great truck. Oh I tow a 2 place trailer in winter & can get up to 12 if I get in traffic & don't go over 50-55. At freeway speeds back to the 10 range.
In my opinion it is a great overall vehicle just not set up to tow. Great in a drag race-poor at towing. No other problems with the truck. Toyota says to always use tow haul mode-it locks up the torque converter & you will get better mileage. Mine doesn't shift right as some one previously mentioned. Cresting a hill & starting down the other side they hold onto the lower gear too long causing deceleration. You can play with the gas & get it to shift or go to neutral for a minute-the only way I could get mine to shift up to a taller gear going downhill. Mine did it in Tow haul, drive or in select...Toyota factory guys said just jiggle the accelerator that it is normal. (Doesn't do it with lighter trailers.)
The 6 litre Chev with a 6 speed is a much better choice for towing & for towing economy.

Talk to Rock Star! He pulled his 3 place enclosed back from New York full of sh!t....including his bike...I think! I know he loves his Tundra.
