08 800 Dragon blows up

Had 250 Miles on the new update.. as well as the new flash.. Ride at about 1500ft... Is anyones 800 lasting with the new update?

I have about 600 miles on with the current flash and update, they haven't been enjoyable miles, it's running terrible right now. Overheating, it went into limp mode yesterday, engine light flashing like hell, only pulling 7900 rpms. The sled was way better before the update, losing hope with this machine. I ride at 1000 - 1500 feet also. Yesterday I was dragging my feet and diverting snow under the tunnel to try and keep it cool, as soon as I did that, temps would come down. My group was asking me why I kept dragging my feet, I said I can't keep this thing cool, it's just taking the fun out of it. 2010 Switch 600 in our group yesterday, his ran fine, temps between 120-125 all day. All I can say at this point is, I don't look forward to sledding with a machine that is running and performing the way this one currently does. Really, WTF Polaris?

i know with that pc5 on mine its running great!! some people are just to stubborn to spend the 400 bucks.. they would rather go back and forth into dealer or blow motor and sit for two weeks. unacceptable when winter is only 6 weeks long where i live..

LMAO! Polaris should have thought of that before they sent this abortion to market. I think it's hilarious when people blame 800 owners for not shelling out another $400 for a fuel controller when Polaris should have had this engine running that way to begin with. Unbelievable.

PCV is the Answer

nanook, sorry to hear about the head ache and failure with your sled it is aggrevating.

I dont blame you for being Pissed about your sled melting down! I also agree no one should have to spend $400 for a PCV so the 800's run like they should! It is nice to have them run good and have some insurance against a lean melt down in the midrange. There are other issues with the 800's too with the faulty voltage regulators and the ECU's melting.

The sleding season is just too short to keep having your sled rebuilt and to loose valuable riding time. The down time is a killer and besides the pcv fixing issues it also makes another 10-12 hp at the top end so it is a win win IMO.

Good luck with your sled.

If I remember correctly, I believe the 600's and 700's have two heat exchangers where the 800's only have one. I have noticed in hard conditions, my buddy with a 700 will run temps considerably lower than myself.

As far as dragging your feet in the snow to cool it, that's what a $35 set of scratchers will do for ya!!!!=)

I have 595 miles on my 09 D8. Has ran awesome from day one. Has SLP pipe, geared, vented and clutched. Was a leftover 09 bought in Oct/09 c/w update as off then. Nothing done since. Question for you though R44. What is to be gained by adding a PCV to an already great running sled? I posed this question to DynoJim in another thread as well. This is nothing against fuel controllers at all, I just would like to know if there is anything left in my motor to be gained or not. I am not sure how much better it could run? I know how all you guys are feeling with your crappy running sleds. I suffered through two years with my 08 D8. The problems with it started the very first ride!!!! I feel very lucky now having such a well running machine. Hang in there guys.

I to have the slp pipe setup, clutching, air intake and venting. I run the PCV and this sled is now amazing. I have jims masp for this setup. It has tons of power now. Its so weird to ride this sled and not have it run like ****. I also run 50/50 avgas/91premium. Jim has it down to a science. If your sled is running great thats awesome. Mine wasn't now it does. He gets a few more hps with his tune.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but buy a PC V. There are to many inherent problems with this motor. One of them is the lean fuel mapping. It needs to be fixed if you want a reliable sled.
If you are getting your motor rebuilt insist they put engine ice antifreeze/coolant in there. Also, make sure you run with ice scratchers.
This is just my opinion, but get those exhaust valves capped. They retain too much heat around the exhaust port when they are held closed too long. There is not sufficient cooling in this area due to the guillotine style valve. So, holding them closed just aggravates the problem.

Ramrod mine also runs amazing but I have to ask after reading your list of mods, Why the 50/50 avgas mix?

I have driven so many 800's that I can't even remeber them all and my 2010 800 with a pciii slp pipe vforce and the exhaust valve line plugged off runs better that all of them. I can tell you that without the pciii and the line plugging it ran like crap. Many of the 800's won't blow up with out w fuel controller but they they just won't run to there potential. Anyone who has had there motor done more than twice because of piston scuffing and has not bought a fuel controller well you pretty much deserve the problems you are facing. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. It is unfortionate that it is not right from the factory but it is the facts. *****ing about it but not doing anything that you can do to change things will not get you anywhere. every manufactureer has had some sort of issues and they are all the same. The big difference right now is that we have a fix and some guys still won't go that way to have a great running sled. My time worth $$$ so the 400 bucks is cheap if it saves me from one tow job home.

Got two rides on my sled before it lost some compression. Its getting a new top end as we speak.

allblowdup, I have had a pcIII on my 09 that blew up twice.I traded the pile off for a 2010 800 and it is know sitting in storage at the dealer with a blown motor and a voided warrenty because of a pcIII and a slp pipe installed. Would you care to elaberate on this situation?

The Power Commander systems are step in the right direction for sure when trying to get the reliability from these motors. However, they are not a fail safe. There is room for human error. As well, there are so many problems inherent to these sleds it's hard to track down the cause. You may have a lean condition that was actually caused by the throttle body boots de laminating. Or the voltage regulator may have failed causing the ECU to create a lean condition.
I see this is your first post. Welcome to snowest. :thumb:Please elaborate more on what caused your motor issues and why your dealer won't warranty it. We are finding Polaris is looking for every excuse they can find to void warranty even if they know the added component wasn't the cause.

Sure, what actually blew on your sled? Did it go down at WOT or was it breaking trail at part throttle? Is it stock or do you have other things done to it? What reflash is in it to start with? What map did you have in the pcIII? What fuel did you have in it. If infact it went down from a scuffed piston and all of the other things that you have were correct I would be looking at the oil pump and or possibly a air leak. If you have a voided warranty because of the pipe and pcIII then you need to talk to your dealer a little. I know that Polaris can and will void it but a smart dealer can keep you out of that kind of trouble pretty easily. Not sure what happened to your engine but we used to see unexpained meltdowns on Vertical escapes also when the jetting and fuel was supposed to proper. Usually we would find something like water in the tank or kinked fuel lines and even sometimes b8es plugs on ocation.

The bottom line is you need to find out what actuslly happened ie piston cuff, piston melt, brg seize, cold seize, etc before one can make any kind of diagnosis. Maybe there is something wrong with the pcIII since it has happened on two sleds. Not sure
