08/09 800 recall...

Head

This too seems like an odd move for Polaris. Wouldn't they want to maintain higher comp for high alt as the RMK was intended and then offer the motor in different trim for the flatland sleds? This whole thing just seems buggered from the beginning.
Now we may or may not need a fuel controller, but likely need a different head? Outsourcing KTM motors at this point sounds like a really good idea for Polaris.

I suspect what is going on is that unless Polaris was to certify 2 motor packages w/the EPA (which will cost $$), they can't just swap heads on the RMK models. Further, there are a surprising number of low altitude riders who buy RMK or Assault models. That would put Polaris back into the same situation where they were - a motor with compression that is too high for the application. Sure, they could offer a "low altitude" head package, but how many owners would want to buy it? Just look at how some owners are upset over having to buy a new can because they run their RMK at low altitude. It's another "no-win" situation for Polaris - somebody is going to be unhappy no matter what they do. Last, I'm suspecting there is a bit of "throwing a bone" to SLP going on as well. It sounds like the high-comp head is going to be an easy, reliable HP gain for altitude riders. SLP gets to sell some heads, owners get the HP they wanted, Polaris gets to run with a single motor setup - everyone is happy. Seriously, I think if we figure out these motors are reliable and run consistantly, owners will ultimately be happy.

Is this the same can that comes with the update kit and will it work with a SLP pipe?

this is the can that both slp and polaris sell as an aftermarket replacement for the stock can(small and light ,slightly louder then stock suitcase) it is the can part# that polaris list as an aftermarket replacement on the update bulletin.............

Capt Krav, I'm with you only I thought that Poo said 154 but Jim and BPM said 144hp now it's 148 I had not so impressive results with BPM pipe mods plus their clutch kits suck in real snow, I'm going to investigate this new head thing don't know why Poo would want less hp at alt.

RMK727:
In April 2009, DTR tested the 2009 800, with the latest flash @ that time, 146 h.p. , then added a PC III ONLY ($365.00) and NOTHING else, 155 h.p.
Adding the $100.00 Sean Ray head mod and leaning it out further, 160 h.p. WITH STOCK PIPE! The BMP pipe tested (after optimizing fuel for that pipe) yielded 157 h.p., a whopping 2 h.p. over the stock pipe, LOL, BMP without the fuel controller was less than 152 h.p.

If you could pick up a used original 2009 head for sale (Have Sean do the top hat head mod for $100) and don't see why the above combo can' be duplicated today(with different programming in the PC III) ????:face-icon-small-hap

Did you look @BMP's dyno results posted here on SnoWest?? hand scribbled h.p. #'s @ the top of a graph, no specifics, NO A/F, BSFC, Temps, and we're suppose to accept that as valid un-biased info???? LOL , They go on to say that there was no benfit to adding a fuel controller??

Hopefully DTR or SLP will publish a dyno report soon and we'll see some credible info.

Recall Time Limits

Does anyone know the final date for getting the Dragon recall work done? I.e. since mine is running fine, can I ride it all winter, and get the engine done in May, just before the new warranty runs out in June?

I was wondering the exact same thing. I havent even got a letter from polaris yet but i guess thats a different issue.

Did they not give a date for the new engine warrenty expiration, something like spring 2010. if so, I would do the update, to allow a season riding to figure out if the warrenty was needed. It would suck to get the new engine, and have no protection next year.

There is no experation date on the service bulletin. However Polaris will only extend the warranty to June of 2010. If you waited untill May then you will only have 1 month of warranty. Personally I would not wait to have this done. I think you will all be pleasantly surprised at how much better your sled will run.

As for all the Silencer BS that I have read it comes down to this. If you ride below 3000 ft and do not want to buy the SLP silencer and choose to run the stock silencer your warranty will not be effected. Polaris only suggests that the SLP silencer be used.

As for everyone else that is using anything except the stock pipe and stock silencer or the stock pipe and SLP silencer the dealers are supposed to warn you that you warranty is in jeopardy.

My buddy and I both own 09 Dragons and we just sat and read through this whole thread. His sled went in last week for the upgrade with a Skinz ultra Q can on...no other mods though. What are the chances of Polaris baching at this? The can was bought in the middle of this july from the dealer where the upgrade is being done (also where the sled was purchased), so its pretty obvious it has not been riden with this can.

Is it worth calling the service department/parts department and making sure there is no problem or just try to fly under the radar?? We just hope that the dealer doesnt list it as a mod to polaris because he has the 3 year extended service contract....

Thanks guys,

B

I dont know why anyone that is still using the stock silencer, no matter what elevation you ride at, would not want to take Polaris up on the offer to buy the SLP for less than 1/2 of MSRP. With the little HP increase and weight loss, $125.00 is cheap.

I dunno, my dealer says if the SLP can is not used on my machine at 1500 feet my warranty is void.

tell him to reread the service bulletin..it says recommended not required...you can also use the stock can that originally came on your sled..make him print the bulletin out and show it to you....if he wont..pm me and I will get you a copy of it...

here is what it says..this is straight off the latest team tips for the 800 cfi update..its middle of page 3....team tips...S-09-01-01
Revised September 24, 2009

Question: Why are 800 RMK snowmobiles not receiving a Service Silencer?
Answer: The service silencer, PN 1262142-RMK, is not included with this Service Bulletin. Polaris develops, tests, and
calibrates RMK snowmobiles for use in high-elevation. Polaris has tested the engine update kit with the stock silencer
and the SLP Silencer (Polaris PN 2876340 or 2877184 or SLP PN09-288 or 09-289) and found it to work according to
specifications in a high elevation environment. However, Polaris understands that some RMK customers operate their
snowmobiles at low elevations and/or have not installed an aftermarket silencer. While Polaris will not be replacing the
original silencer with the service silencer on any 800 RMK snowmobile under warranty, or with this Service Bulletin, PURE
Polaris has substantially reduced the retail cost of the service silencer for a limited time. Customers who primarily operate
their 800 RMK snowmobiles at low elevations may wish to purchase to the optional service silencer. Please discuss the
primary riding location and current silencer configuration with your customer when they call to schedule their service
appointment. The part number for the RMK Service silencer is 1262142-RMK, and can be ordered at a discount for a
limited time only. Please Note: The promotional price for the service silencer is temporary and will end on June 1, 2010

The Skinz silencer was developed using the stock can flow rates. Skinz knows that the 800 is an Air Pump.

Not only that, but they are continuing to test. I just grabbed my stock silencer for them to flow test against the low alt recommended silencer. You have to admire their commitment to testing and research even when their product hasn't shown any issues. Something isn't making sense with what Polaris is doing and they want to figure it out. I've even tested their silencer at sea level with no issues. So, whatever problems Polaris is having seems to be related directly to their own parts.

Does anyone know what is so special about this service silencer and why it's recommended for low altitude use? I can only assume it's less restrictive than stock? If it was required for low altitude use, I would expect Polaris to pony up for it and provide to customers operating at low altitude. Alot of us wanted a CFI sled specifically so we didn't have to re-jet all the time for optimum performance. If a can had to be swapped for various altitudes, that would pretty much negate any advantage to a CFI setup.

I'm guessing the HPS can will run just fine at 1500' and up.
:D
