Spider Indexing and Belt Clearance

the manual says to shim for belt clearance but then it throws off your indexing, then it says to reshim to get your indexing back but this throws out your belt clearance. It also says to turn the spider 1/3 turn clock wise but this won't get your pencil marks lined up that you made before dissasembly. What's the correct way?
