So my RMK 800 had a really bad knock in the motor.. got the motor pulled and apart tonight.. Found the rod on the PTO side got stretched a little or the bearing just went bad where the rod meets the crank.. every 1/4 turn the rod snaps back and forth.. Whole crank n all still spins free, just has a BAD noise.. Seems to be the only problem.. That side piston has a few scratches in the side and front and has some gouges on the top, but there is no damage to the piston rings or the cylinder, which I found somewhat odd.. Well I know I am going to need crank work and want to make sure I am not pulling this thing apart again in the future so I am wanting to get the crank fixed/replaced, have the wide bearing kit installed and of coarse put new pistons, rings and gaskets/seals in it.. I am doing all the work myself with the installation of everything, just trying to get an idea of how much the parts are going to cost.. I need to go as cheap as possible, but still have quality.. From someone who has done this, any ideas on price and a good place to purchase what I am needing? Thanks for any advice

Off the top of my head $1500-1600. I may be leaving something out but here's the math.

New crank 900
2 piston kits 250
Gaskets 100
Line bore case 300

I wouldn't bother with the big bearing. IMO if your case is line bored it provides enough support. Lot's of theories though. Don't waste your time putting a new crank in a case your unsure of.

Thanks for the info so far.. I found a place which has the cranks with the big bearing kit already installed for $450 with my crank as a core.. Should I go this route or can just the PTO end and rod of my crank be replaced and could be ok if it checks out ok?

Sounds good to me. Just make sure the place is reputable that sells the cranks. I don't see why any company shouldn't be able to give you some type a warranty with a line bored case and balanced clutch.

Most places that do exchanges like that are pretty good on their work for a reasonable price too. If it were me I'd send it to IndyDan, search for him on here under that username, best shop with a warranty you cannot beat that is better than a new one from Polaris.

PTO pin broken.

I love IndyDan's work, have one of his bottomends in my 910. But to be honest, spending that sort of money on an '03 800 is really hard to justify. Dan's kit is now $1695. Then pistons, gaskets and if you don't do the labor yourself you are going to be over $2000 to get it fixed. That's a lot of money to spend on a 7 year old sled.

We've taken to the cheap option on the 800s... buy one of those $450 cranks, make sure the cases look good, and put it back together and go ride it. They are lasting a couple of seasons and then just do it all over again. You can do 2 or even 3 of them like this for the money the full fix from IndyDan will cost and get 6 more years out of the sled.

Like I said before, I need to go as cheap as possible and dumping 2K into an 03 machine is just stupid in my opinion.. I guess I will do some hunting for the best prices on parts and see what I can come up with.. Anyone know of a good brand of pistons to go with? Thanks for the advice..

Well I called SLP today since they are less than an hour from me, and they said with what I told them I was looking at best case scenario $5-600 for the crank rebuild + bearings and worst case I am looking at $8-900. They couldnt say for sure since they need to see it. Anyone have good experience with the "tough boy" bearings from SLP? Are they better than others? The crank I can get for $450 with the core will have the big bearing kit already installed which is cheaper than SLP, but if SLP is better I would rather spend a little more.. Going with the bigger bearing, will I need to have the case machined?

I thought about just buying a motor also, but it sounds to me from reading, these motors are ticking time bombs and just ready to go at anytime anyway. Mine went at just over 3K miles.. why spend $1000 on a motor that might have the same problem in just a few miles anyway.. I would rather spend the money and fix the problem (

) so it doesnt happen again. If I bought a motor for $1000 and then had to drop another $1000 in it after it blew it would be like

From what I have seen and heard is that the tough boy bearings are not all that good. Had a friend put one in his and it did not last a year. Allthough the bearing did not go out but the crank snaped:(

Uh, yea, then your only chance is going with IndyDan's crank setup.

SPI pistons are very good options and they cost less than 1/3 what the OEM pistons cost.

You can buy crank seals and gasket set from HiPerf.com for WAY less than the stock stuff will cost.

Spend the money to have SLP completely rebuild your clutch and balance it.

Yea I understand the IndyDan way is the way to go to stop it for certain, but I just want something reliable for the next year or so until I can get a new sled and I think just fixing it with what I am doing will accomplish that goal.. Where can I purchase SPI pistons from? SLP told me the only pistons to buy were OEM, but they are $150 + a piece.. Are the SPI pistons as good as OEM?

Thanks for all the info so far.. This site has been a great source of info!

SPI's can be found from HiPerf.com or from several other aftermarket places.

I have used nothing but SPIs in over 100 sleds over the past 3 years and never had a failure.

I have gotten on that website and found some pistons, but I dont see where they are listed as SPI. Maybe I am missing something. Is this the only kind of pistons they carry? Also what about the gaskets? Any particular brand of gasket you prefer for this?
