Yesterday is a big wake up call

I think it is time for me to be more prepared.

Can you guys recomend some classes for me, I heard BART was ok.

What kind of beacons do you guys have, can you recomend some brands and what to look for in a beacon.

ABS Airbags worth it, should I have both beacon and bag?

Beacon and a bag for sure , a beacon just helps them find your body , an airbag can keep you up close to / or on the surface .

Its sad it takes two guys to die for people to get serious about riding.

I have only been riding for a few years but I have always taken crap for all the stuff i bring out on even a day trip.

Snowmachining is some of the funnest **** Ive ever done. But realisticly some of the most dangerous too. You have to be prepared.

Beacons are a must and the airbag is on my wish list too.

We all got 10k dollar sleds but get cheap on survival gear. It makes no sense.

I always shake my head when you see guys headed in the back country with no backpacks, shovels ect.

Im signing up for some avy classes too.

+ remember beacons are useless unless you get your friends to buy one.

I never like riding with folks who dont have them but will still wear mine.

...and just remember, PRACTICE with the beacons and probes. All the safety gear in the world won't do you any good if no one in your riding group knows how to use it.

the most important tool

airbags, beacons, probes, shovels, and practice,w/ the beacons are all musts. but the most important tool is COMMON SENSE!

airbag a close second. check out the video at abssystem.com and check out the bags in the triggered av. all are on top. less snow on top of you, less chance of getting bashed against sh*t on the way down

Tracker DTS beacon is the most popular I think... all the guys I know use them. \it is a MUST HAVE piece of equipment for backcountry or high mountain riding.

I could list about 20 buddies that have bought the ABS backpack...and most wear them... that drives me insane..because I can only say most wear them.

3-4 of them have $1000.00 spent on a potential lifesaving device...and opt to leave it at home??? \how stupid is that...
They fit just like any backpack...buy it and wear it...

there are some great avy posts and info on this site...as well as through avalanche search info..

Be smart...be safe

BAART is hosting a free hour long Avalanche Hazard Recognition Class on Monday 2/25 at 6:30 PM at Matanuska Telephone Association building in Palmer. That's a good start.

maybe we should get all the 907 guys n ladies together and all take a class at the same time? everyone knows that if you make it a group ordeal more people will show up. just a thought, then after we can play hide n go seek with our beacons. its good practice for sure. but my beacons ancient, i was playin with a buddies and it has arrows and distance.. mine just gets a faster beep to it.. time to upgrade

the peips beacon I heard is the best now..followed bt the DTS.I have the DTS bought it years ago..still works great, check avalanche.org and chugiach center, some of the best avy experts live here so you can get top training, I made all my friends go to a 2 day course and buy all the gear, that was years ago, next fall am taking my 13 and 15 yr old kids to classes and get them all the gear...do both a class room and a feild class..you will learn so much more...hopefully by next fall I will have avy flotation packs for the kids and I.

BAART is a good orginization. I used to be a member, but i ran out of time and had to quit. They have since focused their effort on education, and i believe offer free classes once a month.

I use a DTS Tracker. simple, easy, effective!
