Yamaha guy dreaming in green...M8 or M1000?

I have been riding the first year Yamaha fourstroke since 2003. It's a RX-1M with a 162" camo extreme on a M7 141" rear skid and every lightweight mod with rider forward. Basically everything is done but a turbo.

The sled is bullet proof and keeps going and going but, frankly I'm tiring of riding the same sled for so long. I am getting the bug more severely every year and I now want to ride something new.

My buddys have all turboed their RX-1s, Apexes and Nytros. I have ridden several well running turbos but in my mind a turbo seems to be a gateway drug. Very quickly it becomes, how many pounds of boost are you running, do you have low compression pistons, how much race gas are you using per tank, etc.........

Don't get me wrong, I love my RX-1M and it works flawlessly but snowmobile technology has changed dramatically since 03 and I'd like to move on to new sled technology. That's why I'm resistant to all my buddys saying, "Just turbo your sled". To me it's like adding more memory or a faster processor to a 2003computer. At some point you just have to stop throwing money at it and move on.

The M1000 Snowpro has caught my eye and it seems like with a Y pipe, a fuel controller and a few other mods it should do everything I need but, I see some of the magazines have named the M8 as mountain sled of the year. Not to be closedminded the XP800 and the Dragon800 look like darn nice sleds too but do they have the spunk to compete with the likes of a M1000?

It might be tough for me to go back to a two stroke. I love the ETEC idea and wish there was a Summit with a 800-1000 ETEC engine but with BRPs reliability lately I'd have to wait a year or two for them to get the bugs figured out. I don't want to miss half the season because of something the engineers should have figured out before they fielded the sled.

So, I'll quit yacking and ask you your opinion on where I should land in my new sled quest. Honestly, I want to demo ride all the new stuff and see what fits me and my riding style but by the time there's enough snow to do that the 2010 releases with be a month away and once again I'll be inclined to wait to see what's new and end up waiting another year.

Is a M1000 Snow Pro the right sled for me? What's up with this bog or stall at 4,000 RPM? Is it a fuel mapping issue, and cured for 09?

Thanks, sorry for being so long winded.

Thanks guys.

Is it worth the extra money to buy the Snow Pro?

What are the initial mods you think I'd need?

Is a 162" track the way to go?

I'll be looking this weekend.

on the 09's i do think the sno pro is worth it. You get the telescoping handle bars, and the floats, and maybe something else (not sure). I think the spring order ones came with a boss seat.

for mods a great place to start is a y-pipe, can, intake, and fuel control.

I love my TNytro and I'm not getting rid of it and as much as I love the new M8's, strong rumors have the Doo boys making the 800 ETEC next year. IMO, Doo has had the strongest pulling 800 for the last 5 years. Now if I was wishing for something, Doo 800 ETEC in a M8 chassis. IMO

The fact that I'm even on the Arctic Cat forum is a bit strange. I bleed Yamaha blue. I love the reliability, I understand what it takes to make them work well and I have a shop full of them but, it's time to shake things up a bit. My buddys would absolutely freak if I bought a Cat but if it's the best mountain sled out there, let them freak!

850 ETEC - oh baby!

Go M1000 you won't regret it. As far as track length, I went with the 153 since I wanted a sled that was a little easier to toss through the trees and carve around with. If climbing is your thing though, you should probably go 162". As far as sno pro being worth it, you get better (and lighter) front shocks, a better gauge, the telescoping handlebars, etc. The difference in price doesn't actually cover the cost of buying the floats if you wanted to put them on afterwards. In my opinion the snopro is well worth it.

Go 09 M1000 and put the full slp pipe kit on it with fuel box and you will be impressed. The cats are very reliable to.

Go m1000!!!!! Put a jaws silencer on, scratchers, and absolutely nothing else!!!! It will run like a dream!!!!!!!!!! As far as your question about dragons and xp's, they will NOT run with you!!!!!!!!!

The 09 would have the new Powerclaw track on it, right? isn't it a combination of the Atack 20 and a finger track? I was always a fan of finger tracks until the powder got real deep.

I'll go to SLP and check out their M1000 accessories.

I must admit I kind of lost trackof the Arctic Cat aftermarket goodies. What ever happened to Black magic or D&D? Are they still around with decent stuff?

Yes they have the power claw and you are correct on the combination.
D&D is still around but I think Black Magic is done. D&D gears there stuff more for the flatlanders, but you can get good clutch componants from them.

Frosty, I can't believe you are thinking of changing underwear..lol. I am keeping my RX1 , but the new stuff has m looking as well. Slediot brought over his new sno pro and it is a sweet sled and designed for the mountains. The bar riser is worth the extra money itself. I climbed on a Nytro and an XP yesterday and the XP has me thinking impure thoughts.

Oh no! Not you too Handsome! My impure thoughts have lead me to the dark side and I don't know jack about Arctic cats. I just know I want something new, I'm ready to upgrade and nothing from Yamaha inspires me right now.

I could keep my RX-1M for my son (and me) and buy a Snow Pro as my primary sled. Heck, I know about all there is to know about tuning Yamaha's and nothing about Cats but, it's always fun to learn and forums like this can save me a bunch of mistakes.

call Jeff at Dakota Performance 701-452-4212-he'll make that 1000 run, I ride with 90% skidoo rev's & xp's. Until last year, they did have a better sled than mine BUT when I got that 08 1000 sno pro & Jeff ported, y pipe, pipe, can, fuel controller, & reeds, the power that puts out is a blast & I don't get sh@t anymore! The weight of the sled is a little heavy put the power made up for it. Now I have titanium a-arms, lightweight rotor, lightweight Diamond drive,Fastlane 3" steering post 15 degrees forward, powerclaw track, Skid seat, 09 rails , taillite & bumper. I'm 5'9 165 lbs & I bought a 162. No plans on getting rid off it either!

I remember Jeff. I had him oval bore my carbs when I was riding a MXZ-X ten years ago. It really seemed to work well.

I'm starting to get a little concerend about all the mods. Here I thought I'd just buy the only 1000cc 2 stroke out there and have more power than everyone but the turbo boys. I'm shocked that a 800XP will run with a M1000.
Why is that exactly? Weight?

i think that depends on what "run with" means? on hard pack in a drag race my 08 sno pro 162 with stock track was outrun by a stock with can xp 154 being riden by a 150 lb guy (im 220). the xp would hook and go and my m would spin for a while then start to pull on the xp. when it counts, carving, climbing, trees, in no way would the xp "run with" the cat. the cat just had to much poop for the 800. the next week i installed the camo extreme 2.5 and raced the xp again and the cat would leave on the xp and pull away. i do feel the stock track trenches less in the fluff but if you get an 09 just leave the power claw on it it is the best all around track i have ridden. as far as the mods go i would worry more about the wieght. you cant ride a m sled with out a boss seat and it saves 8 pounds, a jaws can (loud) saves 15 lbs. you can do a y pipe and airbox mod and they run awsome and does not require a fuel control box. iv put over 6k miles on my 07 snopro and two 08 m1000 with ZERO mechanical issues. buy the cat and dont look back!!

you misunderstand me, I just got the 1000 last year, before that I had a M7 /Cutler 1000-the one that could hang with me was a rev 174/nitrous-when he was out of nitrous he was done. My point is there is alot sled in the 1000. The reason 4 the lightweight stuff is because I'm short & its makes it easier to throw around-220 hp in the trees you have to react quick!
