XP TRA Pins/Clips ..

Sorry for being ignorant here but I haven't taken a TRA primary apart myself and im trying to figure out if my dealer knows the what what..

What I was told was: When you take apart a primary TRA on the XP (to install say a DJ clutch kit) there are some small pins or clips that break and need to be replaced every time you dig into it..

This seems odd and redundant for anybody who likes to try multiple settings if its true..

Or did the dealer just break something and is covering their arses?

Also 4hr to put in a DJ clutch kit ( primary spring, pins, secondary helix) seems a little excessive ( so does the 400 buck bill ).. But im working with no knowledge/experience on the DooDoos here..

Oh Snowest Gurus, please answer my humble querier..

Your dealer is sticking it to ya. The TRA comes off and apart real easy. I replace the cotter pins every time if I remove those parts (3 x 10c each)...but if you're leaving the pins and rollers in place and just changing the set-screws...no worries. No parts required for changing spring or ramps.

Secondary....a bit more hassel than the "old style". But your dealer should be able to change the spring and/or helix in about 20 min.

Awesome! guess I have a phone call to make.. maybe i should have gotten a second opinion..

Thanks Dave...

If you are installing a clutch kit I could see maybe an hour of labor for each clutch. $400 for just labor? Maybe if that included that all the clutch parts, both springs, helix and pin weights

If it is an XP they have to take apart the chaincase to remove the jackshaft.. to change the helix. Sorry dude but the shop rate at 4hrs @ $100 hr isnt that bad.
I personally would only charge $250, but I have no overhead. :D

Hey skippy--you don't really have to take the chaincase apart. Just pop the plastic/rubber breather cap out, take out the bolt underneath, screw in the ski-doo tool that holds the gears in place, tap that tool with a hammer and whalah--driveshaft slides out enough to give you room to remove the bolts holding in the helix.
It took me about 4 hrs (with tools borrowed from dealer) to install dj's clutch kit, but I had never taken apart a pimary or a secondary clutch apart in my life. Most of that time was spent scratching my head and cleaning my clutch components.

Yep, can pull the jackshaft and change helix almost as fast as the old style after doing a few....leave the cover on and no mess.

Lesson learned.. got a set of the tools coming.. learn to do it yourself.. something about give a man a fish he eats for a day.. teach him to fish and he'll get in your boat and drink all your beer.. :beer;

i changed out 4 helixs last year and NEVER pulled the jackshaft--little torex ratchet and doo helix tool and 15 minutes:)--my dealer did the first one because of a lack of the doo tool and he charged me 20 bucks

like t.a. says. take those torx bolts out through them away. go to the screw store buy hex type and a 13 ratchat wrench. 15 min change out of helix. dont waste time pulling the jack baby!

Sorry dude...WRONG. I'll do it for a beer or two.....

For those that pull the jackshaft without pulling the chaincase cover.....be aware there is a spacer behind the top gear. When it goes back together the gear should only go on as far as the end of the jackshaft splines, if the gear goes on and about 1/4" of the jackshaft is sticking out then you dropped the spacer. Heard a little horror story today about what happens when you don't notice this and then run the sled....new chaincase and alot of work. And no....it wasn't me (knock on wood!) :beer;
