xp gearing

I can't remember the numbers exactly, but I did hear something about changing the gearing on the 08 154's so I took mine into my dealer mid-season last year. They changed the gear as well as swapped out my used belt to the new 377 & I was off. The re-gearing makes a HUGE difference. It really wakes up the midrange! I highly recommend doing this!!:)

gearing on 09s

Spec sheet shows the following...

146 21/45 = 2.14
154 19/45 = 2.36
163 21/49 = 2.33

My take, short track, = hot rod, IE higher gear
154, not really any dif with with the 163, come on, .03 ratio?

163, bigger gears both top and bottom, makes for a longer chain; however, less wear, ( longer chain, more surface to wear) and the same ratio.

I think the 163 set up would be better on the 154 as well, why a difference?
I dunno, cost? I bet they sold a ton more 154 than the 163 and 3 bucks a whack can add up. It is strange that the 163 is a tad higher than the 154, but perhaps it's a fit issue. besides, if you run the numbers up and down on the gears, nothing else makes sence that comes close to the 154 2.36 ratio.

My 06 159X has 19/45 gears, = 2.36 and it does just fine. I think the 163 with the larger gears, i.e. less friction, less wear, and a .03 change higher from what I am running along with the extra horsepower from the new motor, will be a kick butt sled.

Of course this is just my opinion.......

once we put a better sec sprig in we didnt need to gear the 08's
i am a big poponent of gearing down in the mtns , it helps but i always consider the size of the rider into the situation as to weather i needs it or not.

Gears

If your 08 163 is setup correct. You don't have to gear down. More track speed if good.

Hello Yella Belly,
The 2009 parts catalogs are listing the 146"/154" Summits are coming from the factory with a 21/45 gear combo and the 163"/154" 600 E-Tec coming with a 21/49 gear combo.

Curious what spec. sheet you are referring to?

Thanks,
-John

are the 09 154 xp's coming with 21/45 again?

Looks like that is what the specs on the skidoo website are listing.

I was pretty sure they had listed the gearing as 19/45 earlier this year for the 154's during the spring order.

Mayby I'm imagining chit or things changed

Right out of the 09 X spec sheet on the doo website.
If they made a change, I guess they did not update the sheet.

I'll be a the snow show this weekend, and will ask the doo guys directly.

I thought it said the 09's were going to come with 19/45 in the spring also.

I have a 08 I put 19/45 on. I have ben thinking of trying a 20 on it. I will have a slp full exhaust and a slp head on it this year.

the update sheet also said that 09 would have a new type secondary adjuster. not! my dealer was told by b.r.p. that when the new ones are ready if the customers want them that there would be a charge. also herd that the 163 has them on from the factory. we need to find the rep. at the show in puyallup and bring these points to his attention. i want what i paid for!

Speaking of gearing. Where have you guys been getting gears from? Dealer?? Team?? I was looking for some gears at a good price. Thanks

Last year when they started doing the 19t change on the 154's dealer said they were on back order a month or two. Dealer was $65 for gear. Team was out of stock also.
Got one from wahl brothers for a great deal. I know it was under $30 shiped.

I geared down to a 19t and didn't really like it. I didn't really notice much difference climbing (I'm only 170 lbs though and my sled held rpms fine before) The sled is too slow now. What I mean is I'm always on the gas when with the 21t I could just coast. (Yes I ride mountains exclusively) I'm talking about downhill and flat ground. Now the sled shifts way down when I let off the gas. I know this is nice sometimes on super steep hardpack hills but I'll just use reverse if I really need to. I told my dealer to switch it to a 20t when he puts my 09 drive shaft in. We'll see...

needpowder,
FWIW: I installed a 20T upper on my 08 XP 154X(which is also ridden only at altitude) and I am happy with it. I never rode it with the stock 21T but i can say that I have no issues like what you mentioned with the 19T installed on your machine.

John,
Good to know! I forgot to mention mine is a 154. (As I'm sure you assumed). I'm stoked to try the 20t. Someone else on these boards mentioned the 20t also...can't remember who now. Seems like--if the sled can pull the tall gears, why gear down? Hopefully we'll be riding soon!
