Give him the newest, most easy to use one and teach him how to use it. I'd recommend a Tracker 2.

That way he can find you too....isn't that the whole point, I find you..you find me?

I agree that he needs to be able to use it at some point. I never ride with just him and we all wear beacons. I just want to have a locating signal for him if the unfortunate happens. I have other people (adults with training) that will be searching for me. He is 9 years old. No need to have him ready quite yet.
