Worried about clutching - secondary spring

Pull the boost off and check! And no need to apologize for a long post, you have described almost to a tee, what lead to my busted bolt discovery last year!

I will try and check that sometime soon... it's supposed to be bitter cold the next couple days and my sled is a chunk of ice from yesterday's ride with no heated area to keep it in.... :(

I can't tell you what your ti spring is, BUT....even if it was the same rating of the steel spring that was replaced, there is the possibility that it will act alot differenty. The number of coils and the distance between coils is typically different with ti springs and the results are different from a steel spring of the same rating.
I would order up the same spring you had good luck with before....it's cheaper than a belt.

Seth.

GREAT post BTW...i dont mind reading the long ones at all...like SW said its to the tee and the way it should ALWAYS be..

yeh looks like Zane is leading the way on the titanium spring..but if thats not the case..

i would check the following and go from there.

--motor mount bolts
--belt deflection
--clutch alignment

also, what helix are you running?

im sure its been done, but your clutch was shimmed for that 115 belt correct?

does the primary seem to be engaging correctly? or is it slamming/sticking at all?

Seth,

From Team in Titanium... TEAM TITANIUM WHT/RED SPRING 140-240 LEFT HAND WOUND 30-930700-003.

Something sounds fishy...

I dont see the larger spring cup needed for the TSS-98/04 secondary clutches in your parts list.
There was one on ebay.... Click here for description

TEAM IND. :*All TSS-04 Titanium applications require a delrin washer (Part # 930656) and a large wire retaining cup (Part # 930711)

remove the spring from the primary... re-install the cover and see if it slides smoothly without the belt in place.

Pull the secondary off and pop out the helix (there is no spring pushing on it so dont worry)

Check to see if everything looks right and that the spring is sitting INSIDE of the spring cup fully.

Team website doesn't say anything about needing a cup for the tss-98, was that information on there before the started clearancing the TSS-98 parts?

Excellent point.... I do notice the one in there now does look to be slightly larger in diameter and has a 'single' coil to it compared to the multi-coiled red/black one I took out (and have here in front of me).

Thanks Sean, I am running the stock helix:eek: SAME AS I WAS LAST YEAR, lol and it seems to react fine for my liking, thus I have not changed it... the ONLY difference this year is the titanium spring and 1 delrin washer has been added.

Yes, The primary was supposed to be shimmed for the 1115 when I took it in due to my spider nut issue earlier this season. I ran the sled in the back yard this afternoon and the primary seems to move freely back and forth as you get on/off the throttle to varying degrees.

I had the deflection set close, but I think I will tighten it up a bit for the next ride (guessing a little over an inch or so movement when pushing on it with 1 finger)

Eric, From what I can determine apparently I have the TSS-98 as I have 8 screws holding the helix in place (are there any other ways to know?) Everything looks decent enough IMO, nothing jumping out at me.

I know when I put the new primary spring in this fall everything was moving very freely... I have not checked it since the spider has been re-set tho, but movement on the 'back yard lift test' seemed to show very smooth movements from the primary back and forth.

The TSS-98 and TSS-04 clutches have the same spring cup... I believe... If it wont fit one... it will not fit the other IMO.

Yep... PN 7556227 for both the TSS-98 and TSS-04...

Check the spring cup... I'd bet it is not seating all the way which will throw off the forces.

I'd still check to see that everything is moing smoothly... all the weights swing freely etc.

I have used the Team Ti springs... workded the same for me as the steel ones with the same forces.

Try the stock spring if everything else comes up empty....

Look in the Polaris Fiche... The TSS-98 from 2005 and 2006 SHARE the same part number as the 2007 and later RMK's with the lightweight TSS-04.

I understand where you are coming from... I think that they just did not include the info for the 98 in the disclaimer about the delrin and the cup.

The logic is that ANY secondary with that uses a PN7556227 cup would need to upgrade to the large wire cup... Both the 98 & 04 use the small wire cups from the factory.

Seth, Do you have a secondary spring compressor to see if the Ti spring fits INSIDE the cup?

Steel springs are small wire... Ti springs are larger diameter (for the most part)

I think you are probably right on that. The part number you listed doesn't show up on teams website anymore either. Sucks that they are just abandoning the 98 when so many machines out there have them.

No, I do not have a spring compressor to disassemble the secondary... I am gonna have to improvise one that will safely take the load so I can throw a stock red/black one in (to discount any effect the titanium spring may be giving).

I think I'll start by double checking the motor mount bolts again, tighten up the deflection and torque stop, and replace the secondary spring and see what happens.... If it still gets hotter than it should then I'll be looking for more ideas.

ok, I am confused again. 7556227 is the polaris part number for the thrust washer. 430063 is the Team number for the same Thrust washer. Team is listing another part as a large wire retaining cup 930711.

So what you are saying is a large wire retaining cup is the same thing as a thrust washer?

There have been a few guys selling the tools on ebay for around $50. I don't see any on there right now but I sent a message to one of the guys to see if he had more. I'd like to have one for my own tool collection.

I called them and they said they would cut one for you for 109 I think if you wanted. But the clearance one is only 50. I would get it quick before it is gone.

Yes

Team Part # 430063 Thrust washer for the TSS-04 Which is the same for the TSS-98.

The Polaris part numbers are also the same for the 04/98. (PN 7556227)

The large diameter spring cup is the same type of part... but for a larger wire.

If you think about it... fixed and moveable shieve go together [#7&9] (with washer [#8] between)... delrin washer over shaft[Team #930650]... spring cup [#6] (AKA thrust washer).... then spring.... then roller "spider" [#2]... compress the spring.... and clip [#1] ...
