Wolf Kill

we seen 1 yesterday in the Missouri River Breaks, as big as a decent sized deer and it galloped with huge easy strides. I won't say anymore, SSS....

They were killed two years ago this coming April. West of Pinedale and north west of Big Piney. They were killed legally.

those are some nice ones, i've been about 40 yds from them in my yard in mt.Theres just to many of them i can only speak of my area compared to about 7years ago we only got 1/4 whitetail pop. hardly any moose which use to be in the yard every day now maybe 1 in year still a few elk but pop has droped toabout 1/4, if they don't do someting fast our game and hunting is going to be a thing of the past along with everything else ie,4wheeling,snowmobiling ect, but thats what they want.

^^^ I know that's right. They'll just cut hunting, to compensate.

Back to nature. Wolves are part of the natural balance. Preditor and prey. Man has never been part of the natural selection. You might not agree, but before man, 150 years ago, that was how it was. Man has done nothing except take the strong and leave the weak. Case in point, trophy hunting. I support hunting, fishing and the sports. Ok, a sport is when the other side knows it playing.

Sportsmen/women hunters do not kill for fun but for survival, food and clothing. Now it seems that it is a, killing for fun sport. No more elk, moose, bunnies etc. blam the predetors, Lets kill em. One person stated that its why our ancestors killed em. Our ancestors also wiped out the Buffalo, Indians and anything else in their way. Nothing left in the west. Same idiotic mentality.

I do remember seeing these pics last year but I can'help it to think that the pics were not of the described local..........the terrain doesn't fit not does the sky ....just my thoughts thinkin more Canada ...NWT,Yukon..could be wrong ..

Then we won't need to manage any animals anymore, eh? I guess the Fish
and Game's days are numbered.

Todays hunting is managed, it has nothing to do with the way the Buffalo were slaughtered. The Indians were mainly slaughtered by disease. People have built houses were the animals used to winter, and cars and whole cities block their migration route. F&G feeds elk in a lot of places. You can't hunt year round, so hunting to feed a family is tuff. So, what part will be natural, the Giant Non-Native Canadian Wolves? I actually like the wolves, their in my neighborhood, from time to time. But, I can fully appreciate the ranchers need to manage them, as well as the hunters anger towards them.

I agree with you Wade that they need management. I guess that my point is from some of the posts is we should wipe them out again.

There are herds that are not healthy and they need to be thinned.

Like I stated before about trophy hunting. Who goes out and shoots the weakest animal? During hunting season you will see the biggest racks. Man takes the strong and the wolves take the weak.

I understand the ranchers concerns. The wolves go after the easiest prey, cows or calves. They are also talking about reintroducing them into the SW part of Colorado.

White Man wiped out the Buffalo (Indians Food and Clothing) and brought the disease to the Indians on the reservations. No big debate there.

I volunteer with the DOW in Colorado. I hate to see the unhealthy herds out there starving. I also feed and medicate Bighorn Sheep for lung worm. (Man brought this from europe with their sheep.) Like everything, things are diffrent than a hundred years ago. But the "Lets wipe it out again" mentality is not right.

By the way, I love Elk steak,do not drive a Subaru, and I think hippies stink.

Hunting is part of managment of all animals. As is the predator in the woods.

They were already coming back on their own. there have been wolves in W. Montana since the 1970s. West of Missoula in the 9-mile Valley. they had been seen all over within a 100 mile radius of there.

But nooooooooo Slick Willy Clinton and his regime had to go and mess with it again and stick a whole bunch of them in Idaho.

If they come back on their own, fine. But sheesh, don't go messin with it.
If it ain't broke you can probably still fix it, right?

As much as I can appreciate your stance, I have a feeling it might change some after they are introduced in your area.

It sounds like you are a person that gets involved enough to actually see the results of the re-introduction. Some day when you come across a herd of cow and calf elk that have been killed just for the wolves sport, where nothing but maybe a hind quarter here and there have been chewed on a little and 8 - 10 animals have parished for no reason, I would be interested on your take then.

You can talk about the past all you want but the reality is that humans have invaded the animals territories to the point that the only way to insure existance be maintained is through management. Management is done in a number of ways, including hunting. And trophy hunting is also a part of that management as mature bull ratio's have to be held to the proper numbers to allow the best possibilities for high breeding success. Wolves in this day and age will have a tough time existing in any kind of numbers for the simple reason that there is not adiquate area and food source to supply high numbers, ESPECIALLY if the government doesn't turn management over to the state departments SOON. The ungulate numbers are decreasing rapidly and this will only cause those wolves to go for domestics more (already a big problem in some areas).

It might seem odd to some, but allowing hunting of these wolves will actually insure their existance in the back country's and allow managable packs to survive with ample food sources that they do not have to compete for.

The big game poplulations of north america had been mis-managed by indians for 10,000 years before the "white man" came. Ever hear of giant ground sloth, mammoth, giant beaver, etc? The list of extinct north american mega-fauna is long, and science supports that many of these species were probably hunted to extinction long before europeans made landfall here.

What does the treatment of the indians almost 200 years ago have to do with the current re-intoduction of wolves?

Speaking of P.E.T.A. Any of you seen the video on their website of the guys skinning the Raccoon Dogs? Most disturbing piece of video I have ever seen...okay second most disturbing. First was the be-heading of Nicholas Berg.
I'd give the link but I don't have clue how to do that. Go to the PETA site and it should still be on there. Don't let your kids see it.....honestly sickening!

Duffman. That was a response to the lets wipe em out like our ancestors did. Our Ancestors wiped out the wolves, grizzlys etc. in our neck of the woods. Not sure about the Mammoth and Sloth comments. I think that was more of an ice age issue.

Mtn Extreme. Grew up in Northern Minn and have seen what packs can do. All of your points are valid. If the wolves see a weak or sick animal they will go after it. Natural instinct. Opportunity whenever they can take it. Also they can get consumed into a killing frenzy. They are dangerous animals, but again they are animals.

I agree with management. I am an active part of wildlife managment. Sunday I will be out feeding and medicating Bighorn Sheep.

I have never heard the theory of the taking the Big Bull in order to allow for more breeding potential. Excellent point. I have always thought that the strongest are the ones that will ensure the survival of the heard. But taking out the guy that wants all the cows makes sense.

I know that the F&G in your area has a sustainable population now, thats great! Keep them healthy and managed. If they are reintroduced in Colorado you can bet I will be there assisting if I have the opportunity. I love wildlife and am in the backcounty as much as possible, either on foot or on my sled.

The attached photo is taken from just out of Buena Vista. Me with shovel. We feed them apple pulp and alfalfa flakes with medication.

Merry Christmas All.

They only eat the weak and sick ones:rolleyes:
Animals that big that hunt in packs eat what ever the he!! they want including healthy ones. And don't kid yourself they do kill for the sport of it. I used to hunt the late cow elk hunt in unit 21 in Idaho. It was a good hunt until they put the wolves in. After a few years it wasn't worth hunting. My uncle stopped guiding in the Selway because of the lack of animals.
