With all this talk about loud pipes ...

Thread Rating
5.00 star(s)
if you are forced to wear earplugs then it is too loud!
i had the thing on my old m7 and thought it was perfect, a bit loud but by no means obnoxious now on my m10 i have the speedwerx can and wish it was a bit louder.

if you start to put restrictions up for stuff on the sled where will it end? look at what the emissions are doing...

And a highway or train through their habitat is any less disruptive? There are so many sleds, cross country skiers, snowboarders, etc, when I go out you could have stock and not see any animals.

Perfect ammo for the greenies. way to go dork.

It's called disrupting habitat. It's like building a subway right next to your house. It used to be quiet and all, now there is a big noise every once in a while.
Guys like you probably litter the backcountry too.

Put it this way, do you have a trail system next to your house? Will you allow one on your property? Or do you live in a small enough community that allows sleds to be ridden anywhere they want or can? Bet you answered no to all those because you'll be annoyed by the noise of loud cans on sleds after a few days of it. Most of you that like the loud cans are hypocrits at best because you won't be able to stand the noise if it is there constantly.

Noise laws have come to Colorado. I am not exactly sure how far along the legislation is but it will be a sound test that can be done anywhere, most likely in parking areas, at idle. SLP and several other aftermarket manufacturers have signed on. I would assume this means they will still have power producing, wieght reducing products to sell us that meet the standards.

I don't think rules like this are going to help much. We can be as clean and quiet as they insist and still they will want closures. Recently we had a greenie write a letter to the paper that included my buddies hi-mark tracks as seen from the highway. They guys comment was that while it was quiet when he was there, it sure wasn't the day they were made. HE WASN'T EVEN THERE! HE TOOK THE PIC FROM A BUSY HIGHWAY! Just the fact that there were snowmobile tracks on a hill he skis was enough to offend him.

The ONLY solution is to lobby in mass the politicians and the USFS. That isn't happening, we will continue to lose to these folks until it does. GET INVOLVED!

To compare a train to sleds,,, Think about it. A train does not go just anywhere....it stays mostly in the valley.

I bet if you cross country ski or backcountry ski, you will see wildlife.

Anyone have the nailing jello to a tree pic?:face-icon-small-win

And here is the only answer to the envirozealots assault on our rights.
Get involved or get a new hobby.

I myself like many others here pay for land useage, Modifications to an offroad/racing application is usually exempt in many states and isnt prohibited

what pizzes me off is when all these fags on their bicycles have to ride on the road that myself and many others pay for to have and to be maintained, when im driving my truck and have to yeild and watch out for these idiots that think "you cars need to yeild to me and drive around ME!" they dont pay a single red penny to make nor maintain public roads but yet get to use em and we have to work around them?!?!?!?

My town just spent MILLIONS of dollars to put in a very nice bike path, guess what... about half (maybe) of these no nut lance armstrong wannabee's dont even use it and still congest the public roads that they dont pay a single penny for but yet I get harassed for having loud sleds and get told I cant ride here in the wilderness cause its closed to sledders on land that I contribute to and pay for! itsa buncha BS!

I guess the backcountry animals in Colorado like motorized vehicles 'cause they are constantly on the lower elevation trails and we have to stop to let them pass--especialy those pesky MOOSE.

The moment you shut down the engine, they take off, CC skiers and hikers seldom see wild life cause the critters know they are coming miles away.

I ride a stock sled with SLP and I hate loud.

You guys are killing me here !!! It would not matter if you had a solar powered snowmobile that sprayed pure spring water and spewed pure oxygen as you rode it, they do not want you out there period end of story, you are tracking up their snow and breathing their air and they will not stop until you quit doing it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

All this talk about they/them gets me confused.

Seems like we don't/shouldn't be pandering to the enviro groups, but to the FS and other government land managers. Our battle is not with the greenies, but with ourselves and our lack of representing our thoughts to the government. Seems government land managers do what the people want (majority), but isn't it hard to cry fowl when the majority of citizens interested in the land management of the area are mostly non-snowmobilers and therefore are keen to not want them around?

I have heard stories from I think CatWoman and Oregon girl where they made positive changes by being a voice to the FS/ land managers and working with them. Most clubs that seem to do well (land wise) have very strong relationships with the govt. people that manage the land.

Though, I know I could of, should of, and will, do more on my side to show the better image of snowmobilers.

Just some thoughts.

I ride with a very good friend of mine who donated land for use as a snowpark at one of the places we ride which is a small mtn town. The FS built a parkinglot, warming hut, and bathrooms on this property as per the agreement that it would be for total snow use in the winter and be maintained by the FS. There are alot of people that have cabins past the "closed gate" by this said warming hut that have to ride into their cabins. The last few years they have had their mountee's up their patroling and trying to give tickets to people who park overnight????? Yes I know If their cars would grow tracks or fly out to their cabin then this problem would be solved but the reason we cant "comprimise" with the FS here is because they are all IDIOTS!

They also have given them for being out past the fog line, once agin, if our trucks had a snowblower and could make a nice little hole in the 15 ft snowbank and get over more then I would, or if they would just use the snoblowers they already have and clearing the road with to get another foot or two over.

Yep! yur right!

Lets all showem' by getting loud pipes, toss out beer cans, leave oil jugs in the alpine, cigarette buts, and the packs they come in... We'll fix their wagons...
If half of these people would see that we go out of our way and obey laws, leave no evidence (like garbage) and not blast the valley with exhaust noises, we would not have as many problems with keeping our areas.... but to rebel and say "what's the use"... guess what, we're digging our own grave.

Who has the most in the parking areas

I would have to say that the grave we are digging is not being involved! In the are that I love to ride rabbit ears, Cothe sowmobilers have to pack in our parking areas. The skiers may have 6 cars in the grand total or lots. However, it is us that has more land each year closed.

Want your cake and eat it too. Play without involvment= lost land.

I wasn't really implying it that way, more like the few animals that take off before I get there because my pipes are slightly louder then stock doesn't compare to the grain left on the tracks that causes many bear, etc, deaths, or the deaths of animals on the road. My sled is no where near as loud as the people who own harley's around here so I would gladly live by a trail. heh. I was just kidding about the seeing no wildlife thing, maybe I should of rolled my eyes. My point was there are so many people out enjoying the back country where we usually go that they would be further back in the bush. Area's with less traffic its not uncommon to see animals out and about.

You can scream about not giving an inch, you can say it doesn't matter what we do we will be forced out, you can say anything you want.
It really doesn't matter.

The bottom line is this................
As long as people don't get involved, as long as people don't yell at the "right" people it doesn't matter.

The enviro's have people who's sole job is to lobby in washington, state, county and city levels as well as lobby directly to the FS. Now if they hear from 300 of them and only 1 of us, who do you think they will listen too??

It's not rocket science people, it's simple numbers. They have it and we don't.
You are correct when you say our sleds could hover 10'; above the ground and spew rose peddles and they would want us out.

However, how much easier is it for them to shut us out when we are deliberatly irritating every none sledder out there with loud pipes??

How happy are you when the kid next door fires up his super stereo while you are trying to relax after work??

I have said it before and I will repeat myself (yet again).
Stop whining and get involved. If you don't have the time to do anything, then give money to BRC, join your local club, write a few letters.
DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN WHINE!

Guys, if you are unsure as to what you are riding with and how loud your pipes should be in your states, this is all general government law that is available on google. Search something like "Snowmobile sound level _(your state)_." I did a quick search for you western guys and yellowstone forest is 73 Db and Utah state is 75 Db in most residential districts. The way they measure this is at 50 ft. under throttle as you pass by. Usually you get sniped as youre riding trails in a residential area. so you mountain riders, youre obviously good to go with almost anything! As for you eastern US trail riders, a quick search of Michigan brought up, 88 Db. Ohio at 82 Db. Pennsylvania at 78 Db. New York at 85 Db. Good luck and check with your ranger station, especially out east and they (at least in PA) have no problem doing a simple test for you before you hit the trails. Safe tinkering til next year!
